Fans who watched 2011 WS Gm 6 understandably call that game the best WS game ever. Because they never saw this one. Sounds incredible, but this one IS better...just barely....better.
Hal Smith hit one hell of a home run -- so clutch. Maz's Series-winning clout was practically identical to Smith's in distance, where the ball left the park, and trajectory.
Interesting observations. That's Bob Prince.....Pirate announcer from the 40s until the 70s. And the biggest "homer" baseball broadcaster EVER! He lived and died with the Bucs. He was clearly told by someone to play it straight. If you ever heard him do a Pirate game you would hear nothing but heart. Be was the BEST EVER!
@cizzle107 Sir, that "narrator" is Mr. Bob Prince, a Pittsburgh Legend. In this example, he is doing little more than recounting the plays after the fact. Trust me, he was a very exciting announcer, and I have great memories of listening to him in my early years in the 60's...
First, I cried when the Yankees lost. At the time I was 10. Second is that Mickey made the most heads up, and instinctual, play I have ever seen in all my years of watching baseball. Check the tape at 8:35. Remember that there is one out when Yogi smashes the ball to first. If Mickey gets tagged out it's a double play and the World Series is OVER. Because The Mick evades the tag it allows the tying run to score and the inning to continue. Pure baseball instinct. No one before or since.
For anyone who owns the DVD or recorded the full game, go to Hal Smith's HR in the 8th inning. Look at the pitch before the homer. He tries to hold up his swing on a high fastball, and definetly swings. He goes so far around, his bat is pointing right at Coates. Very surprising Blanchard did not appeal.
I am a 59-year old Yankess fan, but I always considered this the best World Series of my lifetime. What a thriller. Two years later against SF, Ralph Terry (a very fine man and fine pitcher) won redemption, winning 1 to 0 in a complete game in game 7.
They recently found the Bing Crosby original recording of the original TV broadcast of this game (Bing part owner at the time and was superstitious so much he couldn't watch the game so he kineoscoped it instead to watch later and kept it). Suppose to be on MLB TV in the near future, so it will be interesting to see it as it was originally broadcast!
@CArchivist I share your feelings. It will be interesting for me to see how few commercial breaks they took in 1960 compared to the bombardment in ads we have today. I bet there was 1 minute between half innings with 1 commercial. Today, they put about 10-15 commercials in between half innings, with ads during the game as well! You can see how the players get paid such obscene amounts today; in 1960 they actually had to work 2nd jobs in the off season! Not any more!
IMHO, game 6, great as it was, has to be relegated to 2nd place because it didn't decide the Series. This game had the same drama, plus a walk-off home run to end the series in the 7th game before most people even knew what a walk off home run was!
I watched this game live. It was my first year as a baseball fan, and it was the best WS game ever. The lead went back and forth. The Kubek play was absolute luck, otherwise no one would ever remember Mazeroski. 2B Bobby Richardson for NY had 13 hits. The Yanks scored 55 runs and lost the series. It was an amazing intro to the World Series for me.
This was Roger Maris' first WS. He was to play in the WS in 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1967 and 1968. He was a VERY good player. 2 MVPs.
True, the bad hop to Kubek was luck (bad or good), but you can't say for certain what would have happened had that particular ball not been so fickle. Maybe the Yanks would have won yet another World Series (yawn) and it would have been forgotten, covered by that winter's snow. But MAYBE the Bucs would have come back and won in the 9th or MAYBE tied it up and we would have had an extra-inning game 7. We might have had an even more spectacular finish than we were treated to.
This is actually NOT the only World-Series-ending walk-off HR (though it was at the time, and remained so for more than thirty years). It IS the only Game SEVEN walk-off. Joe Carter's Game Six-winning shot ended the 1993 Series.
@dvdspd21 They didn't play the best team from the National League like they used to.Even with 2 divisions it had it's faults..The Western Division was like a pennant race with the Atlanta Braves coming from behind and beating out the SF Giants on the last day. They both won their season series against the Phillies and won over 100 games. The Blue Jays played the third best team in the National League which sort of ruins it as a true World Series.Today is multi divisions and wildcards NFL style.
@GGE47 You'er probably going to give me a bunch of blah blah excuses that can't even come close to answering my points.Reality is the 3rd place team played the Blue Jays.Today's fans are a bunch of sports junkies that go to a Sunday day game with a battery tv watching the NBA playoffs,a radio up to one ear listening to the NHL,and a radio up to another ear listening to the endless number of Nascar races. Then they get mad becuse they can't get the soccer scores.Don't even mention fantasy ball.

@joedits1. The interpretation of the rule was different then. The bat had to go around the plate. Of course, the Don Larsen's perfect game.
