Catchy tune. Maybe because of the heavy treatment by Coke, it's not "Waters of March" but "Waters of Coke". Like I said, catchy tune to the ears, but leaves a bad taste after listening to it.
I'd have to agree with BerlinBunker1 - I never made the connection til now... what a horrific treatment - let's hope Tom & his family at least got some nice checks off it...
My sincere apologies to the late, great ,Tom Jobim(RIP) and the people of Brasil for the awful treatment given to such a historic and haunting Brasilian melody by the Coca Cola company
I read every comment. All are correct except one who said this is weird. No, it's just different. I appreciate the REAL song in português even more. I for one am sad that Jobim had to abandon the beautiful lyrics of his native tongue to please the english-speaking world. That, to me, is as bad as what Coke did. We didn't make Kyu Sakamoto sing Sukiyaki in english !! Americans make little effort to understand the rest of the world. Brazil's provided a wealth of music to us. Abraços Brasil !
wasn't there another coke ad out at same time with different lyrics."its heading down town, its saturday night ,its hanging around its doin it right".I know, what a geek. But it holds fond memories!!
Ick. It corrupts the original sense of the lyrics. It had potential, but it missed. It probably sold more Coke, which was the point, sure, but I don't dig it. Interesting relic, though.
This ad made its debut on January 20, 1985, on ABC-TV, during its Super Bowl XIX live broadcast. There's no mention of "New Coke" in this ad, which was introduced three months and three days later (April 23, 1985).
1985- this was also the year Coke got cheap, they switched from using sugar to high fructose corn syrup. no the price didn't get more cheap. the coca cola company got more rich.
I have a very different version of that commercial of a VHS tape. It has a girl singing, the music is much more subdued, but a lot of the footage is the same.
I disagree. Coke may be shit, and Jobim could puke if alive, but the song is an admirable effort to render the song's meaning rather than sticking to poor literal translations and overtly sentimental renditions of the original song. I drink (Coca-Cola) to that.
@Philanderos Don't drink Coke (or any soda, for that matter)... it will rot your teeth out. Secondly, a song as great as this has NO PLACE in the commercial sector.... no matter what.
When a corporation latches on to a song like this, it destroys the meaning and true art behind it.
AAAUGH, now I seriously need to drive nails in my ears! I feel violated! What's more, The CocaCola Company should be court-marshalled for this crime against humanity!
(Whew, I needed to get that off my chest, thanks)
Waters of March describes everyday life in a similar style to what is called "slice of life" advertising. Coke just could not resist! Here are the original lyrics:

It's the end of the strain,
The joy in your heart

Waters of March
A stick, a stone,
It's the end of the road,
It's the rest of a stump,
It's a little alone
It's a sliver of glass,
It is life, it's the sun,
It is night, it is death,
It's a trap, it's a gun
