This guy knows as much about the Daimler Smart car as I know about rocks on Pluto. He has a strong opinion about something he knows nothing about like the 'Tridion Safety Cell'. I'm on my second Smart Passion Cabriolet (my 1st was totaled in a horrible flood we had in Nashville. I love this cute, reliable, and SAFE car.
had my smart for over a year now, love this car, at one point I no longer enjoyed driving. this vehicle have put an end to that, ppl are so small minded when it comes to commenting on these cars. Swatch, Mercedes, ART, be it a car or anything else for that matter, learn origins and have an educated viewpoint. If your young, single and have a car simply to get you from A to B, you dont need anything more then a Smart. by the way please show me a video of ppl moving a smart, dry weight of 790kg
I own one. Awesome little car. Mine has the diesel engine (not available in the US), and I get close to 60mpg. Honestly don't know if there is a more fun car to drive.
1. The smart fortwo is made by a company called "smart". The company's name and all their cars have names in all lowercase, so it's not "Smart" it's "smart".
2. Mercedes-Benz doesn't make the smart, they only own the smart company. smart is self operated so Mercedes-Benz controls no factors of production.
3. As far as safety goes, just watch smart vs wall at 70 mph, you'll see that the Mercedes designed safety cell gives it sedan-like safety.
The results would suprise you its been crashed at 70mph into concrete and the windscreen and whole cab was intact and still able to open the doors its built around a reinforced cage.
Crashing a tiny vehicle into a stationary object, is a lot different than hitting a moving vehicle twice it's mass.
Here's a physics lesson. A 4500 lb vehicle hitting a parked 1500lb car, at 25mph imparts the same energy to it that the 1500lb car experiences hitting a wall going 75mph.
Not to mention that a vehicle going the same speed, but with more mass is going to stop the Smart, and accelerate it in another direction, thereby increasing the likelihood of secondary collisions.
33 city and 44 highway!? WTF!? thats IT!? buy a Volkswagen TDI.. 50mpg.. it runs on waste oil that costs $2.00 a gallon, and is about 5 times the size of that POS, and on top of it all you wont DIE if you hit a speed bump.... Smart car, the dumbest idea since the inflatable dart board....
And yeah 33 city, 44 hwy is crap crap crap, and you're driving a roller skate to get that. I'm sure they're safe if they're the only type of vehicle on the road. But then you still gotta worry about wayward raccoons.
You can't convince people of the safetyness of small cars. You could not sell a car in Europe that isn't safety. It's made by Mercedes, the leading Brand for safety cars.
Don't knock it until you've tried it : the smart car is just great. I just bought a new one and posted an 'unboxing' video. I wouldn't do that for many cars around today.
It's not your job, each one can like a different car beside Smart Car been around for sometime now. . It has its own benefits driving small and narrow alleys , yes not as useful maybe in huge streets of Canada or States.
Actually Zennie your very wrong. that car is very big, not at all the smallest car i have seen. MY PHRAT BROTHERS WOULD NEVER DO THAT. WHY ARE YOU SO RACIST. i hope your kidding
ok its small, there are thousands driving around here in Europe, especially Holland where I live they are quite popular, only thing that is smaller is a bicycle, and there's millions here. Point is if everybody drove one we'd save a hellova lot of gas, evoiding pollution etc AND if ya had an accident with another Smart as opppsed to a f***ing Hummer, you more than likely would survive....
i see these everyday... seen them 2 years ago everywhere here in canada... great cars, good price and they got good mpg and you can park em anywhere you want...
They've had those in Canada for years, I think they get around 50mph here. Really good for intercity driving but I don't think I'd like to be in an accident in one on the highway either.
imagine this, i live in miami and see ALOT of them. i seriously think its way to small and if you turned a corner at more then 10mph it looks like it would turn over.
Nearly 20 years ago, a coworker was able to rock a Yugo back and forth with ease. The "smart car" is about 9% lighter. Yep, it's a supped up golf cart.
They are made by Mercedes I believe. Plenty of them in Atlanta. I saw them in Belfast a couple of years ago. And they are good in crashes. Youtube it.
This car is good for a laugh. Safe? no way. Get hit and you're in flight and get bounced like a ping pong ball. I'm with you here. Thumbs up.

4. Most owners get more than the EPA rating.

They have Smart Cars all over my area here in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut tri-state area. You can probably see at least 1 every day.

Smart Cars are common here in Ottawa. It's great for short commutes and it's spacious inside.
And there's another car on it's way - The Tata Nano.

Zennie....it is the future.
Yes we all laugh and point, but it is the future.
The SMART car still uses gas, so it's not that smart.
But if the thing was running on something else? Then it might be the way to go.
It also might show what is wrong with American car companies.
We dont attempt this type of design, others do...
This SMART car might be just a joke, but I think it might be the dirrection of the future.
