  • my dice just arrived! can't wait to roll them ingame.

  • your salesmanship is great, im sold. ive never really had need for a d20 in my life, but id buy your product

  • Ok Colonel, you just convinced me... my dice set is useless. My friend uses a d20 die which always scores 1 or 20 and the "where is that good die" moment is a constant in all our games... it's ridiculous. Just spent U$40 on a new set..... can't wait to use them!

  • I can't wait till my GS in the mail, not because they roll more random but because this guy kicks ass!!!

  • my mind= BLOWN

glad i watch all of this.

    learned so much

  • this guy is a genius!

  • I used to use uneven dice.... Then I took an arrow to the knee.

  • Why do you stay up nights putting scars on those dice?!

Hey it rhymes too I like that.

  • 17 people have Taiwanese egg shaped dice.

  • so awesome

  • 9:49 Wow, he's old. Video is Copyright 200. That was even before the Council of Nicaea...

  • A fantastic explanation of Gamescience dice -- notice how Lou does all of this without pause and without errors of any kind. You can tell he's gone through this explanation a lot!

  • I still actively use Gamescience dice that I bought in 1980. There is no substitute. Bless you, Louis Zocchi.

  • I just told a couple bickering over bad die rolling probability to "gamer up" and get some real dice. I pointed them to this video. I'm guessing they'll watch this video and know what I mean now. Gamescience, the only fair dice out there for gamers.

  • Zocchihedron

  • i like how he's a "colonel" :) cool guy

  • love his dice.

  • ha, he called a die a dice.

  • I remember the first time I walked into his store in Gulfport back around 1991. I felt like I had walked into gamer's heaven. Mr. Zocchi is a friendly, expert salesman just as I remember back then. I have moved away since. I remember many of my friends back then using Gamescience dice. Today, it's my favorite brand for it's look, precision, durability and most of all it's quality. It's nice to see that he's still going after all these years.

  • 5:20 He's gotta be loaded.

  • @campbpar He used to sell those too ;)

  • It is so refreshing to hear someone speaking intelligently! This guy just earned my respect and my business.

  • i'd love to buy some of his dice

my group actually uses a random number generator because we don't trust the dice we have run into for the very reasons he specifies. But it just isnt the same as actually rolling a saving throw

  • After buying my first Game Science set two years ago, I have replaced all of my dice. I love these suckers!

  • @kuniklos where did you get them?

  • Very educational. As a D&D guy I have to go check all my dice now for stuff I never once thought to look for.

  • This man is a genius...I want his dice...

    (oh crap, that sounds wrong)...

  • All true. I tried this myself. I took all my game dice and stacked them up the same way in two columns, like the example in the video. Guess what..... EXACTLY TRUE! Too funny. I purchased some of Lou Zocchi's dice and they work great. The only better dice you can get are Casino dice, at a substantially greater price. These are great value for the money!!

  • Show me you're dice lore, old man.

  • It's like a dice gourmet.

  • For an expert on dice, you'd expect him to know the difference between "die" (singular) and "dice" (plural).

  • @SonjaElen Fuck that. Die is a stupid word. Dice should be the official plural and singular!

  • He's the king of dice, and he calls a single die "dice!"

  • What about metal dice? how do they perform?

  • Do you make precision 6 sided dice that would be used in a casino craps game or by serious backgammon players?

  • Rolled two of the glow-in-the-dark d20s while he was talking... came up with two 20s. These dice love their poppa.

  • Must.. order.. pretty.. dice!

  • This is literally one of the most fascinating videos I've ever seen. I'm going to buy the shit out of these dice.

  • Gimme a die thats short on the 1/20 axis plz :D

  • I would buy dice from this man. He seems sad, yet honest. It's likeable.

  • I bought my first Game Science dice back in 1980 and they are still as sharp and lustrous as the first day I bought them. These dice aren't just sitting in a bag for years unused. I'm still running an AD&D campaign and use these dice continuously. My very first set of dice came from the TSR box set and after nearly a year, my d20 was a green rolling marble. Game Science knows their stuff and if you're a gamer, these are the dice to go with. Kudos to you Zocchi and thanks for some awesome dice!

  • Just a note for the people talking about the dice/die singular/plural controversy. I'm just guessing, but I'm pretty sure that in his line of work, a 'Die' is something you inject molten plastic into, and 'Dice' are the things that come out of the Die after they cool. That makes calling a single die, 'a dice' a clarifying statement for him.

  • wow this guy totally sold me, I never knew all of this. I coincidently own a pair of his dice because I thought they looked beautiful. They roll very fairly and randomly. As a table top gamer for over 10 years, I recommend them, plus they stand out in the crowd!

  • Sold

  • Lou Zocchi is now my hero.

  • Buy casino dice for GURPS and HERO. Now, where do I get dice for d20 Modern and World of Darkness :-)?

  • insightful!

  • I swear, this guy is like the Billy Mays of dice. I haven't played RPGs for years, and I want to buy dice.

  • Except that Billy Mays isn't an expert on anything.

  • Whoa, a little more respect for the dead, huh?

  • Lou! Huge respect for Lou! Pioneer, entrepreneur, and teller of truth! Yes!

  • as a casino operations manager for the last 15 years i can tell you there are "fedral" laws regulating dice shap or size, it varies from state to state

  • have you tried, you know, actually ROLLING the dice?

  • My god, my conspiracy against my bad dice is TRUE

  • Cool, the first guy to make polyhedral dice.

Except for the part where a cube IS A POLYHEDRON.

  • where can I order those dice?

  • From Wiktionary:

The singular usage is considered incorrect by many authorities. However, it should be noted that some authoritative sources state that In modern standard English, the singular die (rather than dice) is uncommon. Dice is used for both the singular and the plural.

    It's not automatically wrong. =P

  • "The singular usage is considered incorrect by many authorities."

But not by me, die = singular, dice = plural.

But perhaps I don't speak Modern English being 50 years old.

  • I think you got a bit mixed there, by saying "die = singular, dice = plural" you ARE considering the singular use of "dice" incorrect. And I agree with you, I prefer that die and dice are used in their proper places. But language evolves and I accept it.

And pinworms70, it is indeed "a pair of dice", but the singular is still "one die", though even that is changing. People also don't say "two cactus", they say "two cacti". Well, they don't, but they should and you get the idea. =)

  • You got it; one die, many dice.

  • @jubuttib a ha, i'm learning more and more on this video.

  • They dont say 'A pair of die' they say 'A pair of dice'. Do *you* really know english?

  • now my day is awesome

    because of this

  • This guy sure does know his stuff.

  • dude knows his craft and he's dedicated to making the best product he can, you have to respect that

  • This is very dicey.

  • Grant yourself 10 Geekcred points for watching this. This guy rocks!

  • nobody has this much trouble with dice dude

  • Think about how much misery has been caused by bad dice!

    Thanks, Lou!!!!!

  • This guy knows WAY too much about dice. I'm not saying that as an insult.

  • My brain is bleeding.

  • This actually made me purchase a set of Game Science dice. The joys of being a gaming nerd.

  • Great video, but it was very annoying how he kept saying "dice" when he should have said "die."

  • Never Say Die!

  • @InfinitySeries Your pun is made of win.

  • I've just made some portuguese subtitles for the video, I've uploaded the video on my account with them but I'll feel better if they were added to this video, I don't like re-uploading other people's work.

  • I wish there was an e-mail at their website so I could simply say how thankful I am, I've just bought the dice that shine in the dark and I'm impressed about how perfect his work is.

  • There is an email address, but youtube won't let me post it in a comment! Thanks and you are welcome!

  • @salsatheone where can i buy this

  • i love how excited he is by this!

gotta admire anyone whos going to devote their life to something so specific, its fascinating.

  • totally agree - he's got that "friendly uncle who understands my hobby" aura about him

  • Picked up a set of opaque dice from this company this week. I'm loving them so far. Very old school feel. Bit of a pain to get the numbers filled in though, mine haven't dried yet.

  • My gaming group is about to order dice from him for 94 dollars. Damn. :D

He's got awesome colours, tho. Instant love.

  • i own these dice and they are the best dice i have ever owned though i believe that last year at Gencon was his last year in business if i heard right though don't quote me on that

  • His last year in the business full-time = correct. GameStation bought out GameScience spring 2009 and its going strong. Lou will continue to join us at cons as long as he is able!

  • Very interesting Lou, thanks!!

  • good video and great information. well done without sounding like a jerk.

  • song name please :)

  • David Bowie Little China Girl.

OMG this vids only part 1 of 2!!! I did about 1/4 an just woke up! Feel bad now I said that............Sorry Mr Dice purist.

  • This guy could make wet bread interesting.

  • I don't need any dice, but I want to buy dice from him.

  • I can't believe I watched that whole video. He is extremely convincing. I kind of want to buy some dice from him.

  • He sure looks like a successful business man.

  • im sold LOL

  • I had no idea you could be a dice fanatic...

  • listening to this guy 'sperg out about dice is pretty awesome.

  • werd this joe knows his die.

  • Lou Zocchi was the first domestic manufacturer of polydice for gaming in the US, starting as early as 1974. There were other makers of such dice for educational purposes (Pythagorean solids for example) and a few esoteric games, but generally Lou was the first for the general gaming industry in the America.

Lou has also invented several dice shapes and researched deeply into number juxtaposition on dice. He is pretty much the grand old man of dice her in the US.

  • You are exactly right. He is a Guest of Honor at both Origins and GenCon this year, so I hope many of his fans out there get to meet him!

Booth 717 at Origins, and 2121 at GenCon.

  • Oh lol, I actually think this is interesting. O.o

Didn't know why I even watch this and now I'm going on to part two. xD

    Really good advertising. :B

  • GEORGE! Your character is dead unless you can roll a twenty and SAVE HIM!

  • Seriously.

Also, Why can't he say die?

  • ok this guy is a fucking genius

  • Good or not, I appreciate a salesman who knows his stuff, I'll be sure to keep an eye out for some of these dice.

  • I have a d20 by him, it's amazing.

It has really sharp edges, and the numbers aren't filled in.

  • Holy shit. I had no idea dice were such serious business.

  • I never knew... wow. I must have his dice.

  • I like his dice. I am a bit puzzled, though, why the d8 and d12 dice doesn't have opposite sides adding up to the same, that seems to be standard for dice from other vendors.

Also, it strikes me as a bit odd that the d12 has sorted all the low/high numbers on the same "hemisphere".

But they are a lot less biased than my other dice.

  • this is lieterally my fav vid on youtube lol this man is genius, BUY HIS DICE

  • Now i just wanna know were to buy HIS dice

  • amazon if its not too late

  • Dice ARE serious business.

Just ask any casino owner, or anyone who rolls them for a living.

    They make BIG money.

  • Dice are serious business

  • "Surrender a uniform amount of energy as they gallivant across a tabletop"

Something about this sentence is strangely erotic

  • You laugh, but this isn't just about rpgs the technique of trimming dice has made con artists a LOT of money through the ages, and it still does.

  • Dice is used for both the singular and the plural incorrectly by dumbasses. There, I fixed it for you.

"Dice \ˈdīs\ plural noun, singular die, verb, diced, dic⋅ing." - Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2008.

  • If you're dealing with things only on an intellectual level, it's useless. And perhaps he used the word dice simply because everybody would understand.

  • Actually the convention is that in America "die" is singular while in Britain "dice" works for both.

  • Sorry to sound like a cheat, but I wish to know were to get an Egg shape 1/20 dice, because my DM OP's our monsters alot, it seems thats the only way to get out alive.

So... if I were to look for 1/20 d20's, sould I go for the nearly missing 20 or the hook missing 20 or the almost perfect 20?

  • Of all the people, he should know that a single of those is called a "die", not a "dice"

  • He already has a life

    As a very succesfull businessman

    Beat that

  • ...making a very high-quality product, even though it is a niche product. And some get shit for that...

  • I love this guys dice. I just wish they were easier to come by. They roll great and they do indeed stop short just like the video. Once I got them I never rolled any of my huge big bag of dice again. I really only have two complaints about my dice 1) The paint came off the d20's very quickly. They were all gem style. 2) My green gem d20 had a bubble in it. Now I love'em so much I'd just buy another green d20, but good luck finding one locally.

  • Oh wow, I knew there was something different about this one set I have! A couple of Christmases back, I received an emerald set as an anonymous gift. They've been some of the best-rolling dice I've ever had. He's not kidding about the luster, either; they're shiny enough to kill a ferret with glee. Not to mention how much lighter they are than any of my other dice.

Thanks for posting this, or I'd have never known where they came from! :D

  • I want to buy his dice now, and I don't even play pencil & paper RPGs or gamble.

  • Does anyone know where I can get casino polyhedrals (machined ones, that is)?

  • Wow. Find something and do it well and with passion. Cool.

  • I drive these brothers crazy,

I do it on the daily,

    They treat me really nicely,

They buy me all these dices.

  • Iiiinteresting. So would it be better to laser cut dice, and carefully fill in the numbers with paint?

  • It would be best to make them like casino dice - machined rather than molded. That is prohibitively expensive for casual gamers - after all, you need at least 7 to role-play! I think there is someone who machines d20's, though.

  • I wonder if this guy makes d100s...

  • Yes, as a matter of fact, he invented them.

  • Shat bricks

  • Google for "Zocchihedron". Yes, as in this guy.

  • Does this guy make dice for casinos?

  • Dice are serious business...

  • and another name gets added to my list of people I must meet before I die :)

  • I don't think I could care less about dice, yet I could listen to this guy for hours.

  • I don't care if he's lying or not, the man knows how to make a sale.

  • Surprisingly interesting.

  • I'm sure he's right on the science of it all, but he's been in the dice business for over 30 years and doesn't know the singular is "die"?

  • Yeah, I know, I know. He knows, too, but as a manufacturer he makes "dice" and deals with "dice", plural, all day, so its hard to talk about just one! ;)

  • basic gem stone polishing/candy polishing style techniques...and basic plastics making info...nothing new.

  • back in 1974...

  • *taking notes attentively*

  • Thank you for the information, Mr Zocchi :)

Keep on making the best dice in the business.

  • This is awesome!

  • This is really cool, thanks for posting :)

  • This guy is a bad ass. I learnt a lot.

  • Thankyou whoever put this up. Lou you are a Dice God :D

  • Who says God doesn't play dice with the universe? ;D

  • Now there is a man who loves the word Dice

  • Thanks for your explanations, Mr. Zocchi.

Where can I get your dice?

  • Ebay

  • wow. I feel so many hours of hero scape are now wasted. will order immediately.

  • This dude is the biggest nerd in the world.

Not to mention how fucking awesome he is :D

  • I don't quite know exactly what I just watched, but I'm stoned and it kept be watching. 5 Stars

And I agree, this guy talks like Obama it's insane

  • I have described Zocchi's pitch at least hundred times since 2005. Its great to see it on video. Played a cruel trick on a young guy at GenCon one year. "Why does that chart have all those 20 siders on it?" ME: "See that nice man? Ask him....he'll tell you." The kid was then trapped listening for at least 30 minutes.

    - The Klingon GURPS GM

  • He he he, that guy really love the dice science... I will probaly buy some of those dices, mine are kinda broken. =(

  • I frigging love how this guy talks. I love 'im

  • Another thing I learned. This is something you don't think of but which makes a difference.

Good to know and expertly explained.

    Respect, Mr. Zocchi.

  • He's such a geek. And I'm kneeling at his feet.

  • I am completely sold.

If I could I would hand this man my wallet right now. Where can I buy these dice so he makes the most from the transaction?

  • Zocchi is a good man, and he definitely knows his stuff. Glad I watched, great video. :)

  • Zocchi says he wants to do more videos - hopefully we'll get to that early 2009!

  • Great video. I have heard that talk several times over the years, he really is an awesome guy.

  • that guy rules!;3
