see "Tribute to James Blood Ulmer 'Rhymeless' " where I do my best to honor the harmelodic madness a freakaform funk-punk that Damu Mustafa Abdul Mussawir dreamt of and laid upon the world.
Actually need to update my comment. Mr Ulmer did come over to the South Bank Centre and gave a magical solo performance at the Meltdown in London just this spring: probably best concert I have seen by far in a long time - and I can tell you that I have seen most of the big jazz names that tour these days.....
Saw him perform a few times at the Toronto Jazz festival in the early 1990s. The drummer nearly killed him in one show when he brought down a bank of lights crashing inches behind James Blood towards the end of his solo. James Blood didn't even blink, didn't miss a beat, just continued playing. A year later the festival organisers pissed him off and he never returned (to my knowledge anyway). His concerts were religious experiences. Miss his stuff terribly!
