If he had lived he would be an old man now. And most of you would deride him as an old man, and not care to look at what he did in his past and how he was so innovative. There are a lot of old people around that most folks just see as old, and cannot see the young person that still resides in the worn out body. By dying tragically young, it ensured that everyone would have to remember Andy Kaufman at his peak. Both a shame and a gift. RIP Andy Kaufman. Wish you were here.
The weirdest and best thing I have ever seen on Letterman. Or anyone. I wish we could see this man nowadays- we need the surreal to counterbalance this dark world.
Amazing voice, right on pitch for every note. And then there’s Andy’s avante garde humor! He was a talented reverse chameleon; changing his colors to stand out rather than to blend in. One of a kind & gone.
Andy absolutely swallows that sword. one of the few things you could rely on Andy for was his authenticity. if you don't find it funny, your sense of humor lacks depth and permissiveness. go read a comic strip instead.
What makes this so great and so insane is the sincerity of his performance when he slips into Slim Whitman-mode. Like, it's not a joke performance or anything; he actually does a pretty damn good version of the song.
Letterman really got Kaufman. If ever he appears to snipe at him, it will probably be something they'd cooked up backstage to create a tense atmosphere.
He was definitely a pioneer. I love him! But as to the previous comment that he was really swallowing a sword, I don't think so. They make trick swords that collapse. In order to make sure that the sword isn't short when you pull it out (which many comics have done for a laugh, an old gag) you have to pull down on the tip of sword with your teeth or lips as you lift the sword out of your mouth so that it gets long again. If you watch this closely, Andy does just that, closing his lips on it. FYI
Banned from television........ridiculous. You can tell this was a long time ago, in a more conservative time. Today they make stars out of people like this. They actually ENCOURAGE assholes to get into fights on reality shows and whatnot.
Oh yes, "reality shows", where scripted fights for the viewer is called entertainment is a great example of TV at its finest. We've really come a long way. And by the way, it's liberals who like to label anything and everything an offense to some group of people, that needs to be censored or completely deleted. You obviously have no idea how many shows have been chopped in recent times.
Is anyone else surprised how well he could sing?

He looks TOTALLY like Krist Novoselic from Nirvana. Watch some Nirvana stuff, old interviews etc., they're like brothers o_O

Like what Mcky said before, I love the juxtaposition of "low humor" with legitimate skill. Is beautiful too strong a word?

He had some talent, also some weird ideas. If he had just reigned in the weird ones a bit more......

...in other words, history has vindicated his routine, and he was a man ahead of his time.

p.s. Not that I'm implying Andy is an asshole. ;-) (Far from it, actually!)
But he played a great one on TV sometimes. ;-)
