You're right, because I haven't bought this game, because this video tells (and shows) me absolutely nothing. "There are many notable things about our game, such as the AI." "There are several unique innovations in our game, such as this other thing related to the AI." It's like reading a badly sourced Wikipedia article. In conclusion, it is believed that some people have said some things about various subjects, generally speaking, and AI War is a land of contrasts and also is at a crossroads.
After playing AI war for several hours, it's quite the opposite actually. The method used to keep a track of ships inside a planets orbit, is far superior in AI war, hence there being too much junk, is irrelevant, while the one in Solar covers the fucking screen if I have a huge fleet.
Sort, of, but it's a whole complicated subgenre. For a great intro to that subgenre in its purest form, google Desktop Tower Defense -- it's a flash-based game (free) that was close to the birth of the genre. The basic idea is how enemy waves are scheduled and your defenses are all fixed in position. That is not always true in AI War, but one part of the game does have that sort of general flavor moreso than many other RTSes.
Most campaigns take between 7-12 hours, but a few take less and some take more. It's no longer than your average 4X game -- Civilization IV, GalCiv, etc.
AI War's campaigns are not in the scripted sense of a lot of other RTS games -- it's not a series of isolated story-based battles or anything.
Rather, it's sort of like the Conquer the World mode in some games (I think Civ IV?), where it's basically the biggest skirmish mode you've ever seen, stretched out across 10-120 planets, all in realtime simultaneously.
It does take a long time to play, but that's part of the draw. Actions you take have further-reaching consequences, etc.
Wikipedia has a great definition of 4X, though it won't let me link to that from here. It stands for "eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate." It's a fairly long-running strategy subgenre, dating back to around 1993. Galactic Civilizations, Master of Orion, and so forth are all 4X games, but those are also all turn-based games. 4X games are typically very long to play, and are typically highly strategic as well. AI War is one of the first ever to be realtime, but it is also other genres.
Supreme Commander was definitely an influence on AI War, so I know you'll have a blast with that. SupCom is sort of the unofficial sequel to the classic 1997 game Total Annihilation. If you find yourself getting into SupCom, I would also heartily recommend it's expansion, Forged Alliance. It has better AI, better performance, and a number of interesting new options over the original. Both are modern classics, though, for sure.
My job gets me alot of time on my hands, and this game along with SupCom look to both keep me busy for a good portion of next year, at least until Starcraft comes out, lol

Nearly half of a one minute video is dedicated to saying "the AI is good". This is a very bad way to try to sell a game to a general audience.

DTD played a big part in tower defense going mainstream but happened nowhere near its birth. Agreed on it being a good example though.

Not to mention it takes years to complete a game by the looks of things,

im really on about general skirmish mode, which takes ages
the campaign was long enough on civilization, one of the reasons why i stopped playing the damn thing

What is 4x gameplay?
Never heard of that type of gameplay before?
Though I have been out of the loop, not having windows for years.
I am so old school, lol
I got surpreme commander recently for cheap, but waiting for work to pick up to get another computer for windows gaming.
I want to get caught up and try all these new RTS style games.

I did get forged alliance, it was only $20, and thats usually what I buy things at
I played the original for a bit from a friends copy when it first came out and loved it
I never heard of 4X before, but watching the AI War vids has me thinking it has everything that I like about strategy games
Your sequel should be coming out the same time I get my car paid off
