  • Hi all - a bit random here, so keep with me, lol!

Has anyone got any info on if this group were part of tge northern soul scene? Or more the disco scene? I had this song named by a medium all related to my recent late father a massive northern soul fan. I had never recalled him mention this song, so I would like to see if I can find it's significance, if any to the music he loved.

    Thanks all.

  • @MissEvans83

i suppose Chic/Bernard Edwards ushered in a new era of soul/dance music. Especially in instrumentation. When this song came out it had a "bottom" like no one had heard before. The reason was because the bass was played as the main instrument and everything else was sprinkled under it.The lyrics, the strings, the vocals , the positive up-beat messages and their fashion sense...... more than Disco, more than Northeren Soul, CHIC was International Soul.

  • Classic.

  • Yowzer Yowzer Yowzer

  • Bernard Edwards plays the bass like it's normal 6 string guitar. It's not. That is INSANE.

  • @wizzo194 Welcome to the 45 Club. Hey do you guys realize that although nobody calls it Disco anymore, these guys still created at Ripple Effect that still exists. Think about it Bernard Edwards and Nile Rogers helped create the First Rap Song, Tony Thompson played with The Power Station, and BE/NR wrote "Le Freak" after not being allowed into Studio 54, and they worked with everyone from Diana Ross, Duran Duran, and Madonna. Even now people sample them from Diddy to Hershey.

  • Bernard Edwards was Chic...one badass bassist - RIP

  • @POBox1999 Lets not 4get NILE !!!! The best tandem of the disco ERA!!

  • @POBox1999 Nile Rodgers was cold too!

  • @globalsbc Nile's rhythms are sooooo funking funky

  • @POBox1999 Yeah, this group did so much. Good Times was sampled in the first Rap Song Rappers Delight. Tony Thompson would later play in The Power Station and he and Nile Rogers worked with everyone from Duran Duran, Madonna and even David Bowie.

  • Young Niles on the AMERICAN BANDSTAND with Chic...brilliant!

  • E na @CASSAROLAqToKa do @ChefPauloPecora, Rolando na Pick'UP - CHIC, Dance, Dance,Dance

  • bailes no gremio de realengo e no sargento de cascadura, disco!!!

  • A number of modern grooves BEGAN with Chic.

  • Rap began utilizing the song "Good Times" by Chic. It goes on...

  • I love Earth,Wind & Fire and agree that they might have scored more points as a promoted group. Yet Chic could surely have done the same had it not went the path of scoring so many incognito appearances and outside assists. Even so, EMBRACED worldwide as more legendary in artistry than Earth, Wind & Fire's music itself is the Chic influence in modern music. Chic also had two number one pop hits.

  • Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah). This is the baby that unfolded the drama and where it all began. Chic went on to significantly influence modern music. Many great groups have NOT been imitated as Chic has been. Even lesser known Chic songs influence music around the world! For instance, the beat of Prince's "When Doves Cry" is essentially taken from a Chic song called "Soup For One". The rhythm of J Lo's "If You Had My Love" borrows from the Chic song "Chic Mystique". It goes on...

  • Nile Rodgers is a fucking genius!

  • Thank you Dick Clark Productions for allowing us to watch this. Please don't yank this. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards are the last great American composer/ producers of the twentieth century.

  • @tomthefunky YES you're so right on :D

  • @tomthefunky Don't forget Maurice White buddy.

  • @rockjohnson80: I can't forget Maurice White. I love him dearly. But even he didn't have the success Nile and Bernard had in the eighties. Am I right or am I right?

  • @tomthefunky NO! EWF is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Chic was a great disco group which is not to discredit them, but EWF is legendary. They had 12 year run of classics. Not even the Beatles had that run.

  • @rockjohnson80 A whole new form of music started from the guitar of Nile Rogers are you kidding me.

  • @rufus317 Rufus no offense but trying to compare Chic to EWF is like comparing a Pinto to a Cadillac. Don't get me wrong now...Chic had some nice dance hits and I like them, but EWF had so many styles that they remain in a class of their own. Each album had a different sound. Nile Rogers is a heck of a producer but in no way does Chic trump EWF.

  • @rockjohnson80 CHIC gave birth to Sister Sledge, DIANA,(Diana Ross' most successful album of her career, Luther Vandross was also a part of Chic first. The first rap record came from the guitar lick of a Chic song (Nile Rogers) Speaking influentially, they were not just some disco group. The Rogers, Edwards, THompson production team contributed to music just as much as Maurice White did with Earth, Wind and Fire. Only difference is Nile Rogers is one of the most successful producers of all time.

  • @rufus317 Luther was in Chic?

  • @rockjohnson80 Yes, rj. But to put it more accurately, Luther was a regular background singer with Chic and Chic-produced projects. If you listen closely to, say, the Top Ten pop hit " He's the Greatest Dancer " by Sister Sledge, you can hear Luther elevated at the line that goes: " That I've Ever See-een! "

  • @seereeuss That's cool. I'm only 31 years old and only knew about Luther in the group "Change". He did a lot of vocals for people. I think he is on Aretha's "Jump To It".

  • @rockjohnson80

Yes, and Change is, obviously an student offspring of Chic. As for Aretha's " Jump to It ", Luther, now a padawan-become- jedi... produced it !!

  • the werry best of disco music by the chic

  • I still like this song my favortie song by CHIC!

  • As successful as this song was, it didn't even begin to forecast the group's successes over the next 2 years. This song didn't have all of the Chic elements that would become their signature from '78-'80. Yes it had 'Nard's bassline, but it wasn't as dominant. It even had the Chic strings, but they weren't as reverbed and as full-sounding as they were in "Le Freak," "I Want Your Love" and "Good Times." Not that it mattered, this song is still a classic - even if it wasn't as good as those.

  • This is fantastic! That groove is completely invincible.

  • Wow!

    =D

  • It's Chic !

  • Keep on dancing!!!!

  • Yowzah Yowzah Yowzahhhh!

  • YOWSAH, YOWSAH,ï»
