San Vitale, dedicated by Bishop Maximianus in honor of Saint Vitalis, who was martyred at Ravenna, is the most spectacular building in Ravenna. San Vitale is unlike any other church in Italy. This building is actually a centrally planned like all Justinian churches in Constantinople. Using a design of squinches to hold the dome on top of the inner octagon. Theme being the holy ratification of Justinian's right to rule.
@ShaneyElderberry Architecturally speaking it isn't a basilica. From the Roman point of view it is; namely an important public building. The word comes from the Greek which meant a a tribunal chamber (that is large room in a palace) of a King/Queen/Ruler. The RC church calls the building a ecclesiastical basilica. As to the use of Martyrium: a tomb or mausoleum for martyr - problem, could be but which St Vitale? But who cares what it's called - it's fantastic buy any name you want to use!
HAHA very true! It is wonderful. It's just a sorting thing. Martyriums are designed after the tombs of ancient Roman Caesars, and in the early christian era, these martyriums were tombs for the martyrs of various denominations of christianity, whom were often claimed saints after their death. Martyriums are actually just very big, elaborate mausoleums to different "saints." I just wanted to clarify that since basilicas were actually made for the general public as a church.
What do you think about the relationship between the Mosaics and the Architectural Design?

San Vitale is NOT a basilica, it's a Martyrium. It's from the Greek Eastern Roman style of the Byzantines.
