  • great lessons here. thanks for sharing. 54 and just starting the harp:)

  • this is hard

i always start with single single and then i blow 2 holes together

    :(

  • thanks! this helped me soooo much!

  • Those two notes that are the same. Is that the key of the harmonica? Why did that happen and is there any other spots where that occurs? Ive been playing for about 3 days and sort of picked out a scale. It seems on my c harp I couldn't find an A note. What's the deal?LOL

  • "now i got big lips, so , its easy" haahah! ur funny .

  • Thanks, man for putting this on youtube. You're a good teacher. You make things easy.

  • Thanks a lot for your videos man.. I'm just learning how to play harmonica.. I've been playing guitar and piano for years and always wanted to add harmonica to my repertoire.. Cant wait to practice in the morning... I can't believe how hard this is.. I'm not going to give up though.

  • Don't give up and you will get it...

  • @dbigwalker

I see that you were just on 2 weeks ago. The way you teach makes things so clear. Your videos are the best on Youtube for beginners. You cover what everyone else glosses over. I am a month in at 45 minutes a day and I feel like I'm making some headway.Thank you so much and please post more if possible.

  • I'm still having trouble, no matter how puckered my lips are I still can't form a single note. I tried angling my harp up or down to capture an individual hole but the sound gets lost.

  • should i use tongue U- shape to play single notes?

  • this is so hard

  • The being relaxed and big lips tip really helped me. Thank you. I was having trouble with single notes. You are the best.

  • hey man, i have buyed a little nice harmonica, and learned to hit single notes, but i have trouble on the higher notes. they wont come out correctly no matter if i blow or draw. the trouble starts from the eigth hole up to the tenth. is my harmonica broken or do i make something wrong?

ps youre great keep on ;)

    greetings

  • Hi, try watching this video again,I explain just the problem you describe.

  • @dbigwalker Yes, I followed your instructions, going between hole three (blow) and hole 2 (draw), but on hole 2 there's still no sound :(

  • I have a problem. When I blow the second hole I hear the sound, but absolutely no sound when I draw. There is either the sound of neighboring holes (mostly 1st) or no sound at all. I can play single notes on all holes except this one. I tried to cover the neighboring holes with paper and draw the second one to see "if it's there" and what should be the sound, it worked, but it's much harder then on other holes. And when I remove the paper, still no sound while drawing it. Can you advise?

  • this was a huge help! now if i could only play hoochie coochie man...

  • Been playing guitar for a while now, and I'm trying to get down the acoustic "bluesy" style cause I've always loved it so I'm now just picking up a cheap little ditsy harmonica to try and start learning. I wanna say thanks so much for these videos, cause their really helping me a lot! But it's still a challenge to hit consecutive single notes haha.

Could you recommend a better harmonica for a beginner than a cheap Chinese-made one?

  • nice style its dat country folk tone somenthing you parctice or its your natural tone?

  • What key harp are you blowing? Thanks

  • @jenhba

Hi I always say the Key in the beginning of the video. In this video I'm using (C).

  • this guy is about 10000 times better than some of the other guys on youtube at teaching the harmonica

  • You helped me alot you took the time to help people Thank you, I love your hat too!

  • Great video. My friend on RentAFriend. com send me this video. Really amazing.

  • G-zuz!! That's some lips on screen, dude!

  • Great tips! Thanks for posting these videos.

  • how do you move to different notes so smoothly? is it all one breath?

  • dbig, thank you very much for the lessons. I am just learning. How do you keep ur lips from sticking to the chrome? it's difficult and painful to slide on the harp.

  • dbig, just learning, luv the lessons, thank you. Question, how do you keep ur lips from sticking to the chrome? I have a hard time sliding on the harp. Again, thanks!

  • Great stuff man. Thanks for the help.

  • Great tips. helped me out.

    greetings from germany!

  • I love your teaching. I know I'll be spending a lot of time trying to hit one note. My other problem is, I don't know how to breathe while doing this. Can you describe this in detail for me? Thank you so very much

  • GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!! That's an incredible tip on 1.40 - 2.20!!! i couldn't get it for three days and finally i do!!! Tnx a lot sir, you're grrrrrrreat!!!

  • Awesome!! Your video's have helped this skinny white boy learn how to play the harp. Not having big lips, single note playing has been very hard for me, but I'm getting better at it thanks to you!! And the back up tracks on your website are dope!! Keep the videos comin!!

  • This is the best tutorial on single note playing I have found yet, thank you very much!!

I was just practising focusing air by blowing on my hand, and my roommate walked in asked me what I was doing, I said "learning to play the harmonica :-)"

Looks funny but it's an awesome tip.

    You rock!

  • best tutorial yet, thanks a lot !

  • hi i just recently purchased a harp and was wondering if you could look at my video and give me some help as to how i can improve cause i am a beginner thx

  • Excellent instruction. Thanks!

  • Makes me happy to hear. Work hard and you will enjoy your self all the more.

    Keep on harpen !!!

  • Thanks a whole heap, man! For the first time ever, I hit a perfect two hole draw. You explain it well, and after struggling with it a couple weeks, this vid was the key to my breakthrough! Keep it up, you're doing very well.

  • you have the clearest instruction for beginners. And I'm glad you're not just showing cheesy songs to play but giving lessons on technique.

  • now that really helped! Finally a tutorial that works :P Thanks alot!

  • Thank you for free lesson :) 5* (x1000)

  • Yes leave you nose open when you need air. But you don't have to al the time.

  • Should I be breathing through my nose while playing?

  • Cheers for the info on hole 2, i thought my harp was dodgey! Thanks

  • out of all the lesson content ive heard on this subject, this guy gives the most clear demonstration ive heard so far.

  • the only way i can play a single nte is by covering teh notes beside it with the tips of my index fingers. is something wrong with that? cuz i can play fluently and sounds great. only i cant do cool effects but i dont like them that much either.

  • thank you!

  • you're quite an artist

  • Thank you so much! This has been very helpful.

  • ive been trying to get this single note thing down but my problem is that i cant get my mouth around one single note using the pucker method my mouth takes up 3 notes. do i need to learn playing with the tongue blocking method?

  • Damn.

    That was very helpful.

Thank you alot for this, mate.

  • thanks!

  • Thx Man! I just started to play and your Video helped me so so much!

  • So I messed up and bought a Marine Band G. It seems like everyone teaching uses a C. Is this a problem?

  • No it's no problem at all. Except if you are playing simultaneously, you'll hear the difference. The intervals between the notes are the same.

  • YES! I've been stuck on getting a clear 2 draw for ages and that head tilt thing worked brilliantly!

    Thanks!

  • awesome mustache

  • haha

  • your lessons are the best ! ! ! thanks

  • thanks for the help!

  • lol i mean amazing : D

  • man you´re sound is emazing...

  • i was taught to blow on three holes at a time and cover two of them with my tungue, it makes this step more difficult to learn but im starting to get it, and it sound/feels much better, would you suggest forgetting what i learned and just use my lips?

  • Thank you Derrick. I've been battling with the draw on 2, usually getting a much quieter, dull note compared with 1 & 3. Your tip about tilted the head up has cured the problem in an instant. Cheers :-)

    Shaun

  • Thank you for really breaking it down. A lot of the tutorials on here assume some proir knowledge, but I have none what-so-ever so your video has been a godsend! I'm so grateful and am practising, practising, practising! Thank you!

  • thankssss!! i was about to throw my harp and buy a new one because i didn't know about the dificult on draw 2 ...now i'm practicing!!!

  • Thanks for the tips on hole 2, I couldn't figure out if I was stupid, or if I had a broken harp.

I like the 1-2-3-4-3-2-1 technique for doing single notes. My big problem right now is the inability to judge the distance right, so I fail actually moving hole to hole, and this should help me. Thanks!

  • Great lessons , thank you...looking forward to more!

    Mark

  • I agree with xtotach - many teachers forget these problem areas - excellent stuff

  • Thanks!

  • This introduction is much better than other lessons I have found on the web. Most other lessons didn't help with the disappearing note and the note going weird on breathing in. Thank you very much :D

  • I can not thank you enough for taking the time to teach what you know. It really helps to have different teachers explain in different ways of how to overcome the problems of learning to play harp. I have been practicing for about a month now and this is the first instrument that I feel like I can learn! Anyway, it's just plain fun!!!

  • It's never to late to learn the blues.

  • great help man

    thanks
