The US Government, under the power of any party, will always be corrupt, and the thought of the US Government owning the media sickens me. The best thing a person can do is either get news from many different sources and then develop their own opinion, or just say screw it and don't watch the news. @Floppers15 I agree all sources are biased- my concern is that that bias, in the main stream, is overwhelmingly right wing and corporate. Outside of msnbc, I cannot think of any left wing news sources, while the corporate bias pervades every other station.
If there was a balance, as you seem to imply, of left and right wing sources, I would be more comfortable with our system- but as it actually exists, with 6 corporations controlling most of the info- it is antithetical to democracy entirely.
Thing is, most of what you americans classify as news really isn't news at all, it's more like chat shows. Where i'm from news is just monotone recounting of factual events that has happened, no analysis or anything just: Today this and this and that happened, and now the weather. Why isn't more of american news like this?

Media bias is the one thing that can only be stopped by a government controlled media, which would be even more biased than Fox News or MSNBC. In fact, any media station that is enforced by the government would be forced to report only what the government tells them to. Now don't get me wrong, I hate both conservative and liberal bias, but if you don't like a news channel, then don't watch the damn thing!!!

@tristramshandy3 Most of the main news stations (CNN, Fox News, NBC, etc.) are corporations. Besides, a government regulated or controlled media is much worse than corporate media bias. The US Government, under the power of any party, will always be corrupt, and the thought of the US Government owning the media sickens me. If someone doesn't like something on TV or radio, then they don't have to watch it. If someone wants to be deceived by something on TV or radio, then they have every right to.

The best thing a person can do is either get news from many different sources and then develop their own opinion, or just say screw it and don't watch the news. People just need to remember that bias is completely unavoidable, because bias is practically a human characteristic, in my opinion.

@Floppers15 I agree all sources are biased- my concern is that that bias, in the main stream, is overwhelmingly right wing and corporate. Outside of msnbc, I cannot think of any left wing news sources, while the corporate bias pervades every other station.
If there was a balance, as you seem to imply, of left and right wing sources, I would be more comfortable with our system- but as it actually exists, with 6 corporations controlling most of the info- it is antithetical to democracy entirely.

You guys are so ridiculous sometimes. The United States of America, like every other country, operates a certain kind of economy, that has a lot of aspects of capitalism and some of socialism. It's called a mixed economy. I will agree that pure socialism fails, but it is also INCONTROVERTIBLY true that pure capitalism fails. We have a mixed economy structure, and it works. Problem is, a lot of capitalism's abuses still remain, and that's what Obama wants to correct. And I support him in this.
