Obama's stance is actually that he would only negotiate with Hamas if they denounced their terroristic actions beforehand. That's not the same as saying he wouldn't talk to them. He is just laying out a necessary term of such negotiations if they were to proceed from talks to formal negotiations.

This is just like that video of Cheney in 93 or 94 or whenever when he told of how in Gulf War I they judged it would be a bad idea to go all the way to Baghdad and not worth the cost in American lives etc.. The funny thing is, I think McCain is pulling the wrong pages from Bush's playbook. The big story here seems to be: "they're the government..." Talking isn't as big a deal as recognizing that Hamas is the ACTUAL Palestinian government. It is categorized a terrorist organization by the State department. If America is willing to recognize this "terrorist" organization as the legitimate government, Israel would probably have to as well. This means, Palestine would be a sovereign nation... and Israeli actions within Palestine would obviously be illegal, even by Israel's standards.
