Respect to Helio but I don't think he had any real part in modifying BJJ into its current form. It was his and Carlos' sons that played the major role. They implemented elements from other grappling disciplines to BJJ and created what is today know as BJJ and then credited their father for it to create a personality cult. It just looks like plain old Judo in every video I see Helio roll.
@VCthaGOATdunker the greeks created pankration for the ancient olympics,it was striking, wrestling and submissions, pancrase is a hybrid wrestling event in japan
I know. it was a typo. I just don't consider what the greeks did MMA. it was not sophisticated enough, or atleast there is no evidnce to support that.
Helio would kick my ass so bad!!! At any age!! Would have loved to see him in the UN-FINISHED Bruce Lee's GAME OF DEATH! Bruce was taught Gung Fu from Yipman and sure he would have loved to have Helio show him ground techniques. Helio rules!
Its amazing how vigorous Helio was at that age, not only the way he was rolling, but also the way he talked and behaved in that video, with an aura and vitality of a young man, a testament to the physical and mental benefits of martial arts
inovator and creator of modern day martial arts and mma think about it if royce gracie didnt win the first ultimate fighter would ufc have taken off RIP helio
One Word....WOW! I get so dumbstruck when I see my professor at Gracie Barra do his moves but this one was a ton more awesome for me because of 2 things - 1. Red Belt 2. Helio Gracie himself. I just died for a second at 0:56...it was that epic for me.
com todo respeito, mas essas posições já estão ultrapassadas, há 50 anos atrás, funcionavam que era uma beleza, o próprio hélio já disse que seus netos-no caso filhos do rorion-, deveriam praticar musculação.
hahaha you could roll with helio and he could make shit up on the spot and say no you lose, i win, i invented this shit, your wrong get out of my life ..... but in all fairness LEGENDARY he should be on the posters with biggie and tupac plus he looks super intimidating and he just flew on to his back at 91 without dying seriously WITHOUT DYING
Saturday just two days ago I went and visited carlson gravies school and was able to attend a seminar with carlson Gracie jr. He is a legend in his own right and was the best experince I've had since I've been in jiu jitsu I attend a carlson Gracie affiliated dojo in Bettendorf Iowa near miletich. It's a different feeling meeting someone who's father was one of the original practioners of bjj undescribable feeling to mee a ten time bjj champ
this inspires me to practice jiu jitsu throughout my entire life. If i can be a one tenth as fit as helio when im 91 years old, i'll consider it a success. Most ppl can't stand up at 91; helio's busting out sweeps and chokes on royler lol :)
Well fuck me !! It happened and i didn't hear a word of it. I cannot believe it, yet it must be true. No man of his weight and stature has fought so many, so well for so long. I went out od my way to learn Helio's style, and i am glad i did, the man is a genius.
this might sound a bit weird to some people.the gracies remind me of the hart family.r.ip helio and stu i bet they are trying to choke each other in heaven.
He probably tapped out jesus a couple of times and pissed him off. He is truly a legend and is definitely an immortal because he will also be alive as long as bjj is alive or it's principles are alive.
enough of the trash talk, helio gracie is an incredibly talented fighter, and gracie jiu jitsu is a huge thing to have created.hundreds of people have defended themselves andloved ones using jiu jitsu techniques borlaug is not a fighter, he is a researcher, one of many who has cured deadly diseases. both are accomplishments so few people will ever achieve and we shouldnt be arguing about who is better
So because his claim to fame is Brazilian jiu-jitsu, he can't be an amazing person or one of the most amazing people to ever live? Did you not see a 91 year old man rolling around, doing things YOU can't do and you're probably a fraction of his age? Among other things, he helped people.. promoted a good lifestyle and inspired people in Brazil to aim higher in life. Think before you speak next time.. don't interrupt grown ups.
+1 simply for somehow managing to be condescending and ignorant in the same comment. Not easily accomplished. If you're going to talk about amazing human beings that deserve such hero worship (not that anyone really does) look at people like Norman Borlaug, people who have actually changed the world. In terms of "hero" value, Gracie is Jack LaLane in a gi instead of a track suit.
uhm, idk who are you to be judging someones life achievement, sure helio may have not have made wheat or whatever (i only have basic knowledge of norman borlaug) but he has helped people in his own way, this "freakin jiu jitsu" saves lives in emergency hand to hand situation, cops, military and everyday people use it, it creates jobs though fighting organizations revolutionized and made popular by the advent of BJJ being recognized.people battle obesity, diabetes, fast food by training BJJ
Good initial point. I just personally find it baffling when icons are held up and venerated when really they are symbols of little substance IMO. If battling diabetes were truly the cause of veneration, then hold up Frederick Banting. That is a man who actually did something about it and wasn't just an icon. And please do read up on Mr. Borlaug. He's saved hundreds of millions of lives and his research will give you reason to reconsider the organic food craze if you really want to save the world
the diabetes thing was just an example, hes helped a lotta people (myself included) in starting a healthy lifestyle, although "greatest human being" is a stretch he was an exceptional person i am on the organic food thing, i maintain a home garden and i try to only buy organic products (not always its hard sometimes) and just living healthy and it all started when i took BJJ i was obese, a smoker and a heavy drinker before that, not anymore. makes a difference, not everyone can discover insulin
Which is exactly the point. Those that do deserve admiration not just anyone who may come close and close in this instance is stretching it quite a bit IMO. Its awesome that you've been able to alter your course and I congratulate you. The organic movement is pure marketing. Organic methods would sustain 2/3 of the worlds population and promote further deforestation. It doesnt fair any better in blind taste tests and so on. Penn and Teller did a decent episode on it for "light" research.
it doesnt matter, who are you to tell us who we should and shouldnt revere more than people who stand for something with "more substance"? and bjj does not, in any way, have "little substance". it helped thousands of people in many different ways.
I do believe everything I said to you was justified, my friend. It was my opinion that he was an amazing human being(AMONG MANY OTHERS), and you just had to object. Are you not the one who just said "it's just freakin' jiu-jitsu". It's more than that.. he was an inspiration to a struggling country. Why can't Norman and Helio be both great together, in diversified ways? They can be.. and they ARE. I'm the ignorant one? Not hardly.. Helio's impact is far more profound than you ever anticipated.
damn, the guy was 91 and still coming strong. If any 90yr old tried that, most of them would get seriously injured or even die. Probably the toughest 90yr old in the world. His legacy lives on through his sons, especially Royce as they are both small fighters.
he didnt smoke had go health all his life, how do u think a 95 year old man can do martial arts and still move around like that on the ground, i dont think ur grandpa can do that.
This is epic! This guy was 91! In contrast, when/if I reach that age, I will likely have no control of my bowels, or any of my bodily functions for that matter. What a legend. RIP Helio Gracie.
what do you mean poor Helio? that guy lived to a very rare elderly age and has inspired many and made his own Martial Art proved effective....many, many people use it now.....there is nothing poor about Helio!
its woulda just been cool if he lived to 100 or forever and we found out that he was reallly a super alien from outer space, that had futuristic ideas for self defense at his time.

This is epic! This guy was 91! In contrast, when/if I reach that age, I will likely have no control of my bowels, or any of my bodily functions for that matter. What a legend. RIP Helio Gracie.
