I don't think there's any 'rule' saying that cats and dogs can't get along. I've heard enough stories of pet owners to prove it. Besides, I know people who told me they have very 'aggressive' dogs who are, nonetheless, friendly towards cats and children (I assume their aggression and dominance was focused towards other dogs).

The sent gland thing makes sense combined with the Mother's milk thing. they do this as kittens to claim a nipple maybe by added their sent around it.

Then it becomes and instinctive thing throughout their lives. When ever they find something special and comforting they add their sent to it. In this case that dog gets a free massage lol
