  • this song is very grunge-style... uncle neil can be tougher than billions of boy "rock" bands....

  • What a great tune .Neil Young really early in his career .Its all there

  • TO ALL YOUNG FANS. Hey people I desperatly need help. There is a song that Neil Young either created or covered. I can see him, live, at a piano, singing this very sad quiet melodic song, which is very different from, for example, the song in this video. I had it a few years ago, so it must be famous! Anyone have any ideas at all?

  • @Pentdad this song is sad and melodic, no? ha.

  • @11xzxzxz I found what it was. It was 'Philadelphia'. I think you'll agree its quite different from his usual.

  • @Pentdad Yeah I was being half-silly but this song is sad too. Sure I know what you mean. And Philadelphia was different and maybe the best thing in the movie was Philadelphia book-ended with Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia".

  • @Pentdad Did you ever figure that song out ??

  • @11xzxzxz yeah dude it was Philadelphia.

  • @Pentdad Great great song too. Book-ended the movie Philadelphia with Springsteen.

  • @11xzxzxz Do you have any recomendations from the world of music of similar songs?

  • @Pentdad sort of hard. I checked out your site and you don't collect many music videos just other kinds. If I where to think of bands you mentioned you like as Bruce S I would think of Atlantic City as a haunting song but its not really like Philadelphia. Randy Newman - Louisiana 1927. Again I was just thinking of songs not cities but those cities came to mind. Hey sorry I can't be of more help. If you check out my videos there are probably a few like Philadelphia but it would take a long..

  • @11xzxzxz time.

  • everybody's alone...neil has a way of expressing ideals with just one phrase...it starts and ends with neil

  • this song really reminds me of Lennon. Has anybody else thought that NY is the only artist that could have stood in for JL to do one more round of Beatles...not that he would have tried to replace JL, just that NY is as much of an iconoclast and rebel yet exquisite melodic and lyricial creative genius in his own way to have made it very interesting...George is gone now but its not too late for a Paul*Neil*Ringo session is it?

  • when I'm free I wonder if I'll miss the pain.... :( exactly.

  • very beautiful uploads*****

  • does anyone know where / when this is from

  • @Iancrockert was written in 1969 and recorded for the album "after the gold rush" but after excluded...you can find it now in neil young' archives set...there are 3 different set of it...ciao

  • @11xzxzxz The "typical Neil Young courage and stubbornness" is most often necessary for innovation, advancement, experimentation and authenticity in music. We are starving for more people like Neil but the current cultural and economic climate makes this nearly impossible. continued....

  • @11xzxzxz ...continuation. The musicians who don't need to make money creating music (see Charles Ives the greatest American composer imo) or are not obsessed with fame (how rare is that?) are for the most part the innovators. One positive aspect of the vast YT wasteland is that we can find these occasional gems.

  • @curiousgeorge555 Even though I am low brow when it comes to classical music, I do like Charles Ives some. I agree but would add most every art form is also bland or bad due to many people having mundane tastes and little or no appreciation of great artists. People don't want a challenge except for a new challenging cell phone that does everything and wipes their ass too.

  • @11xzxzxz I can understand people not being into so called "high art" or "serious art". A lot of snobbery and pretension in those circles. I wouldn't call it that myself as I don't believe any art form is per se "higher" or "better" than another. As for me I simply like what I like. I agree with Bernstein or Ellington...whoever said it, "There are only two types of music, good and bad."

Unfortunately I agree, for the most part, with the rest of your analysis.

  • @curiousgeorge555 I actually feel in my own mind that I aim for high brow in all kinds of songs from A to B, ha no, on the complete high to low brow continuum. As a kid I liked classical music (in the background anyway). Oh not wanting to expose my vulnerability to the world but what the heck; when I was

I first heard Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf at 4 years I was crying and everyone assumed it was from anything but the music.

  • @curiousgeorge555 I hardly notice "snobbery" when I like something but good point you made in general. Yeah, ha, I hated to say the vast wasteland is there on YT and sometimes I forget when I just listen to this kind of great music and find people who I can relate to or have similar taste to me. Oh and remember even if it takes a long time for your next video (sorry to boss you around, ha) but if you could keep your signature (well after one video I dare to deem it such) CONT.

  • @curiousgeorge555 cont.. psychedelic colors and close-ups of your face at time with magical and intense grimaces and your relaxed eye movements or whatever was going on in that video that make it so cool to watch. You seem not self-conscious and that contributes in large part to the point I am rambling to make. I'm just trying to be helpful to you and to your viewers who will be in for an unrude wonderful awakening when they see your talent. Not asking to manage you .. begging. Kidding.

  • Over 43,000 viewers. Nice. Thanks to CuriousGeorge (listen to him play violin too) I thought this was a great great song and why unreleased? I understand some of the other archives not being released but this is so very special (not in a Creep way).

  • @11xzxzxz Nice pun!

  • @curiousgeorge555 thanks.

  • @11xzxzxz

    Yea thanks !!!

  • @alanasin Sure. What did I do now? Are you Asian? a lad in sane? Costello's girl who took off her party dress.

  • Comment removed

  • @curiousgeorge555 Belated thanks for the acknowledgement of my pun, Jack.

  • Can anybody please help me with the mp3? I've waited too long to listen to this song on my ipod. (Not the Crazy Horse version I have that.)

  • The simplicity is what makes him so utterly brilliant.

  • Great song! One of my favorite unreleased Neil tracks along with Lady Wingshot. Thanks for posting this gem. I wore out my bootleg tape containing this years ago.

  • 低予算の映画と聞きますが、期待できるクオリティの予告動画ですね。

  • Just another awesome masterpiece by you here, thanks, favorite☺

  • when was this song recorded??

  • i want to meet the one person who voted this down... oh wait... actually i dont...

  • @88hanimart88 Si je comprends que vous avez écrit, oui, l'un pourrait être isolé et pas solitaire ou probablement un peu lonely.OTOH l'un pourrait être isolé et lonely. MEME il y a beaucoup au milieu. dans les

zones grises. Dépend de l'individu et le situation. Mais je pourrais avoir manqué votre point?

  • @88hanimart88 Thanks Miss, Mrs or Ms Annie. (-;

  • Oh yes, everybody's alone. That'r right.

But not separate. If we only want.

Thanks God we can all be just one thing with the entire Universe and relate one another so as to be in a deep souls and hearts communion.

Maybe it's gonna take a lotta love...

    Gotta lotta love.

  • @pattylibraia I'm hearing you. It is a beautiful thing. The way God made us all unique. Alone but able to connect. Pitty the soul who has never connected in deep soul and hearts communion./// "It's gonna take a lotta love

To change the way things are

It's gonna take a lotta love

Or we won't get too far" ..."Because my head needs relating

Not solitude"/// To everything there is a season,

a time for every purpose under the sun.

  • @curiousgeorge555 Yeah!

'cause my heart needs protection and so do I...

And it's gonna take a lotta love to get us through the night,

it's gonna take a lotta love to make things work out right.

For there's a time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing.

Nevertheless, you're in my heart, you're in my soul.

  • this song,.... it played loud and frequently at one time in my life.. bittersweet memories...

  • @blue2blueinthenight "A little part of it in everyone" can sure be lonely sometimes in a crowd.

  • Superbe morceau, j'adore.....

    Christian

  • keep it up and die like John Lennon - loved by all but maybe not his son Julia. You can't call you son? John didn't call Sean and he probably died thinking " damn I was a bad dad. ' Sorry Neil I expect more from you. It took a near death experience to make you nicer. Do you think Lionel trains could give a little bit to your first son ?? Stop resting in the shade and do something important.

  • Needle and Damage is a good video response. I like needle a little more (ignore me in my hyperbolic moments) but if this had better lyrics it would be better .. and with Neil's most eerie and wonderfully disturbing and scary vocals and guitar, how can a song get better. Just great. So eerie Neil could be talking about his favorite car part . or the handgun Jack N used to to beat up Carrie or that fact that he doesn't see his first son ..

  • This version is better that CSNY version; what Neil Young song isn't ? Maybe Helpless?

What a great raw guitar .. pure Neil.

  • Neil Young is a cop now.

  • Curious - Well thanks for the painful info..ha

  • Had to come back for a fix of Everybodys Alone.. IMO the best song Neil has unreleased. I hope I die and Neil will write about me. It would be the story of a boy with no visual memory and how he learned to cope (often quite badly).

  • Correction - "Everybody's Alone" has now been released on the Archives Vol 1. Not this version, mind you.

  • Not with Steve and Dave and Graham?

    Damn it.

  • i wish i could meet neil young some day. there is something about him that i can´t explain...

  • I meet him twice and he got his dog Old King after me. Kidding. Neil's "something" is introspection, feelings, and the courage to say reflective things and his perfectly off-ptich voice of alienation and hope and sensitivity.

  • @11xzxzxz. Excellent comment.

  • @curiousgeorge555 Danks.

  • Also nil is "somethin" becuse he has badd back and soo dis make him play guitar in a special way. Dats all dere is to it. dats the rael reasom.

  • @11xzxzxz He may have become a hocky player and missed his calling if his back was in better shape. hmmmm... But the RAEL reason he is great is cuzz he collect golf balls and sell them to golphers. And Dats true story.

  • @curiousgeorge555 Yeah then sports writing dad could have gotten him all the balls he was missing/

  • @aasa63 Yeah He's got that certain sometime. Cool, sensitive, courageous and fiercely independence. And he just comes up with great melodies and lyrics and always something a little cryptic. And his voice is really so cool to think that some think he's too nasal .. well he might be but they are missing the realness.. and the rawness of his guitar strumming and voice together in this song.. Makes me shiver for a second when I think of some commercial pop singers "improving on" this.

  • @11xzxzxz you are so right!!!

  • look at mother nature on the run in the 1970ties

  • jaggerm1: and.. look at mother nature on the run in the 21st century

  • Neil Young & Crazy Horse - After The Gold Rush (Music)

  • neil young and crazy horse...after the gold rush.

  • One of my personal favorite albums of all time. I used to drive up and down the Califrnia coast through Big Sur and past the Hearst castle back through Santa Cruz, you get the picture. I had to make this trip ( I loved it) many times. At times this was the only cassette I had in the car. It is very possible I have heard this album more times through than any other by anybody. I was alone on the return many times and here I am writing this to here. It did get lonely but Neil sure hit the spot. cg

  • @curiousgeorge555 I heard Brittney Spear is ready to make her comeback on the slouching shoulders of Neil and this great song. I miss the pain of her songs back almost 10 years.

  • What's the name of the neil young song with the line "There was a band playing in my mind and I felt like getting high" please help. This is driving me nuts

  • "There was a band playin' in my *head*and I felt like getting high..." After The Gold Rush.

  • Good one. Never heard it before. Thanks.

  • Pleasure do a simple vid to a great song.

    You're welcome. ~cg

  • Raw guitar and voice .. Neil always knows when to leave well enough alone and great enough alone too. Fuc you Neil for doing to much musical experimentation in the 80s too today .. you went a bridge too far.

  • I can understand your feelings on Neil's weird experimental trip in the 80's, but what's wrong with the 90's? The guy made some great tunes back then. "I'm the Ocean", "Change Your Mind", "Slip Away", "Philidelphia", that's all 90's.

  • BrokenChair or broken arrow (ha)

We all have a likes and dislikes. I really don't know all of those songs but I like Philadelphia.

I picked up "Are you Romantic" and got mad at Neil for such slop (imo - no offense).

And really I like 90% of his '66 (including Mynah Birds) to '79 or so. Could say most of his songs are great. But not after 1980 to now. Change your Mind goes on and on and on .. it's OK but not a great song to me.

I know people love it. I didn't even like Piece of Crap.

  • Forgive me. I will try the other 2 but I have heard stuff from time to time . His War record had a lot of pretty decent songs but I only played it twice. This is the only unreleased song that I like .. I see everyone like Interstate or some Hawaiian song but I just like everybody's alone ... not that the words are great but the melody and guitar playing knocks me out .. and shuts me up.

  • ...Goodmornings..

    ..thanx...

    xxx

    Peg@

  • What a voice . What a great guitar sound he gets. Words could be better but this guy is so great.

  • Love Neil.

  • regarding Welfare Mothers, both the Rust Never Sleeps and the Live Rust version were recorded live during the 1978 fall tour. With the exception of Pocahontas and Sail Away, the entire Rust Never Sleeps is a live album with the audience track removed.

  • Starboy - OK thanks. I Just know that there is more than one version and that Welfare Mothers was better on the video.

  • Hey when I die they can play this song and then something more "up" like Old King or When you dance I can really love. Then play I Will Dare or Unsatisfied by the Mats.

To think with this unique voice of Neils that he couldn't sing but some of his songs with Buffalo Springfield. Everyone was predicting Stephen Still's to have great success - and he did do great work with Springfield - but it's clearly Neil who is the musical genius.

  • 11xzxzxz punch "Old King neil young" into google and Neil tells a great story about King. King (Elvis) is Neil's dead hound dog as i'm sure you know. ~cg

  • Thanks Yeah I had read that but cool to re-read.

  • this is amazing, kind of reminds me of the foofighters, i guess he influeneced a hell of a lot of people...great song.

  • This unreleased song is better than anything by Pink Floyd and Rush, two god-awful boring art rock groups.

  • I can not believe someone gave me a thumbs up when I put down Pink Floyd and Rush. Thanks man there is always a first time for thumbs up and it will take some getting used to. Who are you? ha.

  • woah now, asshat. I am a huge neil young fan but to say that floyd wasnt good is just ignorant.

  • Comment removed

  • fuck of man, sado, you'll spend all your time slagging of pink floyde, there not exacly my favourite band either, but god, have you nothing better to do with your life?

  • I retired early and made a lot of money so I do this harmless blog stuff. I have friends and a girlfriend in Europe for the year and I can only spent so much time on the phone with her and can't be with her. . My comments shouldn't bother you.. relax. Take care.

  • If you can't find anything at all by either Pink Floyd or Rush that you like, I really feel sorry for you. Not to say this song by Neil is bad or anything...

  • Demonic one - I feel sorry for you to make such an idiotic remark. Billions of people don't like or have never heard of Rush or Pink Floyd and are very content. I am not trampling on your rights so shut up. Deep and analytical people tend to like Neil studies show. Not to say that Pink Floyd attracts stupid people, of course. Their music is intelligent just not my taste. People who like Indie or Independence labels including The Replacements and The Smiths have the highest IQs of all

  • cont. ..with the exception of those who like Beethoven. People who like gospel are the least intelligent and people who like rock in general score a little higher on SATs then then classical music lovers with the exception of Beethoven (not the dog movie). This really has nothing to do with me or you but I thought you might be interested. You may be more intelligent than me .. now just act that way and stop acting like your musical tastes are better than mine.

  • Well, aren't you a touchy one. Mentioning you may miss out on something doesn't really justify you calling my opinion idiotic or asking me to shut up, does it? Your description of said bands makes me think you have heard little of their work, so your brusque dismissal seems overly hasty to me. Praising one artist by belittling another is also quite odd. I do not claim superior intelligence or tastes, and I couldn't care less about what 'studies show', having seen plenty evidence to the contrary.

  • Daemon - To say you could care less about scientific studies is not the brightest thing to say but I know what you mean. The studies mean next to nothing to me too. Next time don't say anything negative about me .. it's not necessary and it's rude. You can tell me how you feel without putting me down.

  • Sigh...I haven't said anything negative about you. You may well take note of the final paragraph of your last comment and apply your advice to yourself, as it was YOU who were rude in the first place, putting ME down. As for scientific studies: when they are properly conducted, they can in general be expected to provide verifiable results. I have NO objection to that what so ever. However, too many people claim that 'studies show' (something) WITHOUT citing sources, hence my scepticism. Peace.

  • Daemon Really at one time I listened to Floyd but ... Have you heard Love's Alone Again Or or Move's Blackberry Way which parodies Paul's Penny Lane (and I really like Penny Lane). Sister Havana by Urge Overkill; or Graham Parker's "Pourin It all Out" or TheSmithereens "behind the wall of sleep". They are on youtube or you are welcome to see what's on my site. What is your favorite Floyd's song? Oh I did like "Money" and comfortably Numb is a good song.

  • I am not familiar with the songs you mention, but as for Pink Floyd, I prefer the early days with Syd Barrett.

  • OK .. I probably do prefer Syd too on a relative scale. Oh I just mentioned those songs if you ever have time give them a listen.

  • @11xzxzxz

I've always been fond of Dogs by Pink Floyd, Fearless is cool too. I like to listen to Floyd when I'm in the mood for other worldy guitar playing. Gilmour's latest dvd is worth checking out, IMO...Not a big fan of Syd though.

No one can touch Neil as far as depth goes, also IMO. His vocal work on Massey Hall is as good as I've heard him sing.

  • PowderF - I agree that no one can touch Neil in Depth and his singing on Massey Hall is great. His comments and joking around and his speaking voice at Massey shows his sensitive soul. Hey, heard you might be one of the great commentators on youtube. Well.. welcome to the Worst. I annoy people with my contrarian views on so many sites. I'd rather get good reviews but youtube is just my place to not worry about being totally honest with my opinions.

  • I get a kick out of reading your comments...don't always agree with you though. I get into it with people all the time...anybody that disses my man Neil is gonna get it...but I really let my nasty side come out on the tpmtv video channel. Teabaggers are usually the main target of my ire.

  • Thanks man. Yeah, anyone dissing Neil will get teabagged by me. I looked at your site and I see you like cover versions a lot. What are your favorite Neil songs? I know Powderfinger is in my top five .. and for some reason this unreleased haunting song (I am always a sucker for haunting songs) would make my top 10. Also, I can understand your disagreeing with me but not my anti-religious remarks, I hope. Say that ain't so.

  • Favorite Neil songs?....hmm that's tough, it varys from week to week. I would put On the Way Home up there Albuquerque, Cortez, I Believe in You, Words, You and Me, White Line, Pushed it Over the End, Love and Only Love, EKTIN, Powderfinger, Tell me Why, Revolution Blues, just too many to name.

And yeah religious ideology is steeped in bigotry, hypocricy, hatred, pedophilia, and everything else that is wrong with the world today. It's beyond ridiculous and I feel bad for ones who buy the lie.

  • Good list. I really like years '66 to' 78. My favorites: I'’ve been waiting for you (his perfect record, imo) On the Way Home

One more Sign (Buf. Springf box set)

    Needle and the Damage Done

Powderfinger Little Wing (hey that's from 1980 - see I can be a bit flexible ha)

Cortez the Killer Old Man Everybody's Alone

Winterlong Expecting to Fly Birds When You Dance I can really Love Wonderin' (really like the video) When the Morning Comes

  • "Little Wing" was actually written in '75, durring the "Homegrown" sessions, but was never put on an album until "Hawks & Doves" in 1980. Sorry to sound like a snob.

  • Brokench - Nah you don't sound like a snob. I like to hear any facts about Neil. I did know he had a big backlog of great songs and that some of his CDs or songs were released years after recording. .

  • Yeah beyond ridiculous. The Bible is beyond all horrors if you read it completely. God threatens to take of the clothes of women and display their naughty bits. Oh I take that back .. that would be kinda nice to see.

I can't remember ever believing in god, so I am really weird in that way as I was brought up in a religious home (but the den of iniquity in my farm house is where I was personally schooling by Satan (Stan the Man).

  • I remember Satan would always joke around and repeat what jesus said .. "Satan, get behind me" and they had disgusting sex. That was the only thing about Satan that I didn't like but he was a gentleman with me and never tried to do what priests do all the time.

You did know God killed close to a million people through the armies of Israel and billions more through cancer, misquotes, earthquakes, floods, etc ?

  • Look, I love Neil, and Pink Floyd equally, but if you're gonna say that, please listen to "Echoes".

  • I have listened now and I just don't like Pink Floyd.

I am alone in this of course.

  • OK I don't want to beat around the bush no more. Has Neil's voice ever been better? Sometimes Neil's voice is whinny such as Southern Man at times but he does slow songs as Old Man and Needle and the Damage Done remarkably great. Shakey's voice is sh- sh-shaken as Eddie Money sang.

Has anyone done more with a nasal voice than Neil? I say these words because I love the man..

  • This song is borderline great in good part to Neil's voice. Real, raw, unreleased dam it.

  • Some of the best music is raw. The song is great to me. Maybe in part due to multiple listenings. ~cg

  • Yeah great to me. I love it. What a great voice for a lonesome song. Did you ever hear Welfare Mothers on Live Rust? Again I can't recall exactly but it seems that Welfare Mothers was an OK song on Rust never sleeps but on Live Rust it almost achieves greatness. A Manic performance by Neil. Sort of the same with Wilco - Impossible Germany on youtube is definitely better than the cds . I say definitely because I played it for two Wilco fans and they thought what I did.

  • I love both Neil's subdued and "manic" styles. ~cg5

  • Curious - Yeah that's a good way to put it.

  • i love this, and i love that it's unreleased.

like it's just a secret, between neil and me.

the other twenty thousand views don't count :)

  • Comment removed

  • I was talking to Neil the other day and told him that he has such a great voice. I told him the lyrics could be a little better on this song, as Only old friends can talk to one another, as "everybody alone, please pick up the phone". I said why do others not see what a great evocative voice you have and he just said "you are just weird". True. Anyway, I will never understand why Neil is not more loved & why most every woman I ever meet doesn't like him much (and I ask most of them)

  • Release this now or else.

  • neil is such a genius. how many great songs? TO ME, MORE THAN THE BEATLES. MORE THAN ANYONE. HE IS A SENSITIVE, INTROSPECTIVE SOUL AND WRITES ABOUT THINGS OTHER CAN'T EVEN DREAM OF WRITING CAUSE "THEY AIN'T DAT DEEP".

  • Only one who comes close in my book is Dylan. But I agree I think Neil has written more great songs than quite possibly anyone.

    ~cg

  • I think the only band that comes close is the Replacements. Neil can really play folk or rock guitar much better than Dylan .. well who can't. Ever see his obnoxious interview with a Times reported .. Dylan really got off in Don't Look Back on putting him down and it seemed mean though all of his fans love it, I suppose.

Neil writes personal painful songs and Dylan hides behind shades. Both are inscrutable in person and they are good friends - visit each other in their homes. But no sex...

  • Neil is by far the better guitar player. More innovative on acoustic and flat out blows him (Dylan) off the planet with his electric guitar work. Neil is more of a Renaissance man IMO.

I agree. Neil writes more in the first person and is a genius at putting his feelings into words. Dylan is a poetic genius as well. Just different.

Yeah, they are friends. Have worked together on some projects too.

I loved it how Bod went straight up to Neil at Bob fest to shake Shakeys hand. ~cg5

  • Yeah cool!

  • Anyone know where I can find the picture in the video?

  • I see this song has made it onto the Archives, at long last.

  • Cool! ~cg

  • Neil is the last heroe

  • I gotta kinda agree. ~cg

  • What a masterpiece...Thanks for sharing

  • Your welcome. ~cg

  • I just saw Neil in concert in cologne Germany......great...amzaing.....

  • He's the best! ~cg5

  • that's so fuckin' true,.,.,.,. thanks for being there, neil!

  • I'm glad so Neil is here. ~cg

  • wonderful!

  • (-: ~cg

  • very nice good riff

  • really like this song, thanks cg..

  • my pleasure! ~cg

  • nice work brother!!

  • You did it again curious

  • This song tells exactly how I used to feel as a teenager and some times do now, and even where you could find me...I used to go alone to the woods on the near hills just to think...Neil has the power to make me feel as I'm 14 again...

  • When i learn to be free, i wonder if ill miss the pain. WOW...

  • "I wonder if I'll ever miss the pain..." is the most enigmatic line I've EVER heard...!

  • Sounds like C Jung KnowhereMan123.

Shakey is a flat out genious. ~cg

  • it gave me chills so enigmatic. " I wonder if I'll miss the pain" I don't miss it but sometimes it sinks my soul.

  • Honestly CG- my favourite Shakey song.

I am grateful that you've posted it.

The CSNY version is really groovy!

Someone posted that on youtube too.

  • One of mine too. I checked out the CSNY version. Very cool. I prefer Neil's vocals in this version. Both are great though.Take it easy CrosbyStillsNashYoun ~cg

  • I love these rare versions of Neil. You have made me very happy. Thanks.

  • * merci

  • votre accueil ~cg

  • just when i think i've heard about everything by neil, i realize there's more, so much more. thank you, we ARE listening!
