  • I have tried natto once. I didn't have any problems with its smell or its taste. Like someone has described that it tastes like washed baked beans, I totally agree. The gooey texture, though, was what I didn't like, but I'm sure that given some time, I might learn to love it. If Japanese people have been eating it for hundreds of years, there must be something good about it, right? Nice video.

  • i definitely want to think about slug slime whenever i eat natto.....

  • I'm a bit scared to try natto. I don't really like food that smell bad, but hey, if other people like it, kudos to them. Any ways to make it a bit more mild smelling/tasting?

  • I think natto smells kind of nutty. I don't think it tastes bad...but not good either. It tastes bitter to me. I just have a hard time getting over the slime. I feel bad for the people who freak out when eating natto (or anything from a diff culture) cause they're the ones who are to closed minded to enjoy anything that isn't overly processed beef or chicken.

  • @manlekim don't it tastes horrific!

  • DON'T EAT IT!!!! it smells like fart and it tastes like Someone ate sewage and crapped it out and a dig ate the crap and pooped it out then some kid ate it and Craped it out again and the finnaly you eat it throw up and some poor soul eats that puke called Natto

  • DUDEBRO, THanks awesome video ! Just what I was looking for ! :)

  • :D I want to try it!!

  • It really looks quite disgusting but I really want to try it.

  • how do u store this, i usually keep it in the freezer and it's solid hard when i get it out >_<.... (had 2 microwave it, ... and i hate microwaving styrofoam)

and this stuff taste amazing, but kindda pricey :S

i was still hungery after a bowl of rice + natto o.o!

  • Wow, they way you eat it makes it look good. I might just have to try it again lol.

  • NUUU WTF IS THAT OMG

  • @redrebon

Soybeans which have been fermented on hig temperature with the typical microorganismen which turns soyebans into natto. one enzyme, nattokinase is high on the media because it destroyes plaque in your arterias

  • you should add some shoyu too. it makes natto more tasty

  • I tried nattô for the first time last week end. I bought some in a Japanese convenience store in Paris. I expected it to have a strong, pungent smell like a ripe cheese, but actually it smells a bit like yeast. As for the taste, it's quite sweet. Yummy!!

  • That was cute XD

  • hey thanks man, i forgot to comment on this a while back and became brave enough to keep trying natto until i liked it and watched this video on how to prepare and eat it before my first time

most of my family likes natto, and now i do too :3

  • By the way how would you describe the taste? Cheesy? Pickled?

  • I suppose it would be more cheesy than pickled, if I had to choose... It's definitely not pickled. It also doesn't have as strong a smell as most aged cheeses. It's really hard for me to call it cheesy. It's fermented, so the... slime... is proteins broken down by the fermentation process. It's one of the best ways to eat soy beans because this processes gives your body access to proteins that it would otherwise not be able to digest.

  • @n0exit well I finally gave it a shot. I was a little nervous so I added egg (sunny side up) salt and pepper along with rice. It was pretty okay. There is a sort of hint of ammonia taste but being a Georgia girl I found my all time favorite solution. HOT SAUCE!!!! It's actually pretty good with hot sauce added!!! Ruins the true natto experience but doesnt add heat killing the bacteria and it gits rid of that ammonia smell.

  • @n0exit also I think next time I will try it without the mustard. I think it is more the culprit for the strong smell than the Natto it'self. I am getting a ton ideas like mixing it with ginger and a little ginseng root over seasoned rice!!! Thanks for your post. It at least got my foot in the door. As for slime...I think I am going to come up with something else to call it when I try to introduce it to my friends. It's ...consistency reminds me of cooked okra.

  • @MsRrrr77

Mixing natto with yoghurt makes the sliminess go away, also the strong smell.

Maybe vinegar or lemon juice has the same effect. I do not know what in the yoghurt effects it..the acid or something else.

Also vinegar or lemon juice will neutralize the ammonia which is produced by the bacteria through debuilding the protein

  • I am so glad that you posted this video. I just bought this exact brand out of curiousity and was shocked when I opened the package. I thought it had gone bad. I am so glad that I looked it up before throughing it out. I will try it for dinner later. Thanks for the upload and stop calling it slime!!!!

  • ネギ、大根おろしを混ぜて食べても美味しいよ(^-^)b

  • natto is delicious but i only find it frozen in my country, in the same packaging as you. (it's so small!)You can eat it with an egg, or in a miso soup. yummy!

  • @EPINEVERTE77 can u tell me how it taste like? im so curious

  • My most amazing experience was makig my own - I could eat it by the cupful. (I got the inoculant on the Web and making it wasn't as difficult as I thought.) The small amount of natto in the packages leave me wanting more.

  • i have been very curious to try this dish because i heard of its health benefits.

It doesnt look very appetizing but i am willing to try it and see how it goes; who knows, maybe i'll like it alot. Thank You for the upload :)

  • Great video. I'm Japanese and have been eating natto daily for a very long time and was getting very disappointed of all the immature natto reaction videos on youtube until I found yours that shows the proper way to eat natto and actually promotes it. It has a long history and tradition in Japan and I wish more people in the west will have an open mind when trying it.

  • I just tried this stuff for the first time five minutes ago. The slime didn't bother me, but it's slightly musty undefinable taste was a disapointment. Slightly nutty, not as cheesy as I expected.

With strong flavours you can have a definite opinion but with this my western palette just went ?????? As for raw eggs, I think they have to be fresh and free range to reduce the possibiliy of salmonella poisoning.

    I'll give it another go.

  • If the raw egg is added, bitter of natto becomes mild.

Isn't there custom of eating the egg by the raw in the United States?

  • Not a lot of people eat raw eggs in the US for two reasons. First is that people don't like the texture. This is also one reason many people don't want to try natto. The other reason is that for a long time, people here have been led to believe that eating raw eggs will make you sick. The fact is though, that the inside of an egg is sterile. This is why eggs are used to grow the yearly flu vaccine.

  • I see.

Even the Japanese has a lot of people who hate natto and raw egg. If it is the United States of America, it might be natural.

The combination of rice and natto is the best like being in your video.

  • @n0exit true, eggs are more sterile than people realize. I've been eating raw eggs for about 6 months now and never have gotten sick once. Eggs only go bad when they've been sitting in your refrigerator for a month or longer. I recommend organic, free range eggs raw.

natto is packed with some good vitamins! It has the rare but beneficial vitamin k2 in it.

  • you need to eat the fresh natto or make own natto with starter bacillus natto bacterium. to freeze the natto is to reduce its potency

  • i wish i could find it where i am...there aren't even any Japanese restaurats/shos where i live...

  • What does it taste like? I've had some very... different opinions on natto so far x3

  • It really depends on who you ask. To some, it has a really offensive smell. Maybe I've sniffed too much Zicam or something, but it's not so offensive to me. My roommate, who loves to experiment with ferments and stuff, can't stand natto. A lot of people have a problem with the consistency rather than the taste.

  • LOL! That was really fun, thank you! I have a question- is it always fermented, or they might be selling it pasteurised (which is useless because there is no beneficial bacteria in it then). Thanks for the vid!

  • It's always fermented, but it may or may not be pasteurized. I kind of doubt that it is, but I don't know for sure. I think that you can make your own by steaming some soy beans and adding a bit of store bought natto for the cultures.

  • I agree it's very tasty, i love nattô (missing it by now (x o x))

  • Do you even chew it?! Wha! Using words like 'slime' when preparing food doesn't make it sound that tasty but I still want to try it!

  • Yum!

  • Nice funny, educational video. :D

  • LOL good advice! awesome vid

  • I eat it natto with a spoon

  • Haha! I can't wait to freak out my Hubby with this! xD

  • I love fermented soybeans. However, I disliked it in the days of a thing of a child.

I disliked a feeling of appetite and a smell.

However, the food that the fermented soybeans are healthy.

I improve bloodstream and am low-calorie.

The taste that is unforgettable when used.:)

  • Mmmmm fermented soy beans... Never had Natto but I AM curious.

  • what is Natto?

    It looks like puke :/

  • 納豆総見える !

  • where do you buy natto

is it only in japan or something

    pls reply

  • I live in Seattle, which has quite a few Japanese people, plus there's a really huge, nice Japanese grocery store here. Before I moved here though, I was able to find it in some asian markets. There probably has to be at least a few Japanese people around thought, because pretty much no one else knows about it.

  • I really like my nori with some wasabi mustard, sometimes I roll it up in some salted nori in a "wrap style". it tastes so yummy! It's good with rice and nori. As I can't eat rice (too much carbs!) sadly. I also like to eat umeboshi as a little dessert with it. the flavors pair really well. so good! I've had natto over fresh fish too.

  • ACK! I meant "I really like my natto with ..." not nori! XD

  • うまそうww

    ネギと生卵があればなお良い

  • I so badly want to try this stuff. unfortunately the only sushi place nearby that I really trust always tells me its not fresh (which I find suspect since its apparently not fresh from 11am to 9pm ever, and its fermented, its already not fresh. Is a few hours more gonna kill me?)

... This is one of those things everyone who I know who've tried it either hated or loved, which just makes me more curious

  • Natto does no go bad since it is fermented and the bacillus natto protects it from any contaminants. I have eaten months old natto and had no problems. But I have to tell you that the beans will dry out over time and the texture will not be as smooth as when eaten fresh.

  • good grief! This dude is eating his food like there is no tomorrow! Slow down dude, smaller bites! do you want indigestion? lol

  • I like to slighty sautee' my natto, add the mustard and soy sauce and eat it by itself.

I read, that it's good with scrambled eggs.. I'm yet to try that....

  • A tip for those who have never had it before. Dont eat it by itself. You are suppose to eat it with rice and if you eat it with ajitsuke nori (seasoned nori or teriyaki nori) with a side of miso soup it tastes so good!

  • I LOVE this stuff by its self (well ok, with the mustard pack in it).

  • really? to each his own. I prefer the salt pack.

  • Natto tastes like washed baked beans. Its foulness is over-rated! It is mild and pleasant, gooy but not slimey as such, it does not stick inside the mouth, it does not resist chewing or evade the tongue. Perfect alone. Use for fibroid healing, also lower intestinal bacterial support for vitK production. Legend as anticlotting agent as in heart and stroke prevention & recovery. Value for money and enjoyable, the best way to optimise grain is fermented as with most food must be sprouted/soaked etc

  • うまそうに食べるねーw

  • That was just great, thanks. I prepare my natto about the same way, but sprinkle some green onions in there too. Yummm!

  • how does natto taste?

  • hehe how nice.. i wanna eat natto too :)

  • lol? are u frikn serious...

  • Yep.

  • ARE YOU FROM BELLINGHAM?!? I AM!! I could tell by your hoody!! I was in Japan last year and craved natto ALL THE TIME!! The real way to eat it is to mix the natto with the flavorings (like you did), but throw raw egg and chopped green onions on top. But the natto by itself is still good too! I'm sure we're the only two people with ties to Bellingham, WA who know what natto is and will eat it! YOU ROCK, MAN!!

  • Sorry, with the rice of course.

  • Is it okay to eat raw eggs? I'm in Japan and have yet to try natto - but when I get it I don't want to get sick if I add a raw egg.

  • Eating raw eggs in Japan is quite common, and no one gets sick. I'm not sure where you're from, but compared to American standards, Japan's food handling practices are very strict and safe. I felt comfortable eating raw meat and eggs when I was there.

  • Yeah, from America.

Well, okay then. That's good news. And I do feel quite comfortable eating the food here.

  • Also, US food regulations are far too restrictive. Eggs are usually quite safe to eat raw. In many countries, they aren't even refrigerated, and some foods, salami for example, which is traditionally not cooked, are prohibited from being made in their traditional way in the US (this doesn't stop some places from air curing it anyway).

  • I went to Western. But I think there are other 'hamsters that like Natto. There are quite a few Western students that study in Japan.

  • i recommend to eat Natto with MISO soup just like eating a humburger with coke or sprite.

  • i just bought some today! i've always wanted to try!

  • Looks tasty :D

  • Natto is excellent for cleaning arterial plaque as well. It's been shown to dissolve clots in people with thrombosis/embolisms, and has been compared to Reteplace for its potent thrombolytic ability. That's why often after people eat it, they feel a warm rush much like they took niacin, as it thins the blood and widens capillaries.

  • wow finally somone else besides me that eats with his left hand

  • I don't mind the smell and the gooey stuff. But to me, it tastes like paracetamol.

  • I always crave natto and end up buying it but whenever I eat it, I wonder if I'm crazy for doing so.

I've read a few blogs and instructions on eating the natto and I think you're meant to stir it before and also after adding the sauce packets instead of just after to make a fluffier neba neba (the white goey gunk).

Also if you twirl the chopsticks a bit like you're eating spaghetti, the goo doesn't get everywhere = no need for showering after eating =]

  • thanks! i am about to try this so I needed some tips!!

  • i like my nattou without the mustard.

i always hear adding daikon and/or leeks make it taste SOOO good too, but i have yet to try it in this method yet.

  • I eat every day.

    Delicious!

  • What does it taste like? And does it really smell that awful!!

  • It does have a very bitter smell to it. I tried it once and I didn't like it. It's surprising that this food product is very popular in Japan. They said it's suppose to be good for you too.

Out of most Japanese food I tried, Natto was least I liked. (And stupid YouTube viewers go ahead give me all the damn thumbs down, because I'm being honest)

  • 良くかき混ぜて下さい。

    かき混ぜる程美味しくなります。

    少し固くなるまで混ぜるのがこつです。

    納豆は健康に良い食品ですよ!

  • You forgot to say "いただきます"!

Good eats, I bought 2 packs of three at Mitsuwa.

  • when you buy natto is it in the frozen section in the super market?

  • Not where I get mine :-) It's in the refrigerated section. Uwajimaya in Seattle is pretty good. In other locals though, you may have to settle for frozen.

  • 玉ねぎを炒めて入れるとうまいよ

  • natto looks deliciois :--P Like we here in Finland have "salmakki" and japanese have natto.

  • it looks really nice, but i hear its really disguisting

  • taste good?

  • you shouldn't speak with your mouth full of food!! lol, jk xD

hums... I'm not quite sure if i'm going to try that stuff... it looks like brain xD

  • You might want to say something about the strong smell and taste. I nearly got knocked out by the smell the first time I sat next to someone who was eating it.

  • Don't use the sauce packet because of MSG.

    Add soy sauce instead. :)

  • The sauce packet isn't soy sauce, so you'd have to make a proper substitute using mirin, soy sauce and broth if you were going to do this. I'm not sure that the sauce packet has MSG, but if you are concerned with eating monosodium glutamate, read the label, as you should with all foods. An amazing amount of food that you wouldn't think of has it. It's stereotypically an ingredient in Asian foods, but it's also in in much of the food eaten in the US.

  • I eat natto with my breakfast. Natto is very healthful for your blood.

  • any Japanese food is fantastic! I have to test this, looks quite yummy :)

  • i wanna try Natto but i dont know where to find it.

  • Where do you live? In areas with large Asian communities, there is usually an Asian grocery store that will have it.

  • oh ok im gonna go find an asian guy now

  • singapore have it?

  • depends how many Japanese expats there are. I know there are a lot that go there for tourism, but I don't know about Japanese living there.

  • Guys, you don't know what you're getting yourself into =S

  • Natto is absolutely the grosest thing I ever tried to eat.

I generally like Japanese food very much... but fermented soy beans - no, thanx.

  • Your kitchen is pretty. XDDDDD

  • When people tell me I've got a Natto breath, I take that as a huge compliment...

    Can't get enough that shit!! : )

  • why did you like natto

  • It's just really good, and extremely healthy. Don't you like it?

  • I appreciate your simple presentation of eating of Natto, but there's more to expect with Natto, its flavor, aroma and texture when incorporated with other ingredients.I hope you could have some time to browse and make another presentation. try to ask a friend, a chef would be the best, a Japanese chef preferably.

  • This video was basically just a response to all the other videos of people trying to eat it strait out of the carton with either soy sauce or nothing at all on it. I don't recommend that as a first step to enjoying Natto. Now of course I do appreciate the flavor enough to eat it strait out of the carton, but I still prefer it over rice.

  • well non japanese ppl especially non asians will probably not like it the first time they try it. Especially because of the unfamiliar smell its pretty strong and the cheese even strengthens it. The taste is good though.

  • Well I don't think I'd like it with cheese, and I'd never heard of eating it that way, but it is apparently something that some people do.

  • I tried it four times, and three times I almost threw up. Just seeing it made makes me nauseous. (Is that spelled right?)

  • Have you tried it yet following my 12 step program?

  • i never tried Natto lol

    looks friggin delicious tho

  • It's good with some dried bonito or gombo too.

  • I can't stand nato. The more I eat it the less I like it. Just different taste for different people

  • It's good with a raw egg and green onions too.

  • Indeed!

  • i waNt suM.. lOoks so deLiciouS

  • I want some. *o*
