@elemix27 There is no absolute lowest power for burning something as it depends a lot on a few things, namely: the item being burnt and its color, the wavelength (color) of laser, and the power density (dot size basically).

However to answer your question practically, about 50mw should be able to make things smoke if focused well.

Your module went out easy... on one of mine I worked two days to pop it out without damaging it :D

The entire brass sink was press-fit inside the barrel.

BTW, you're sure about those DX (none in stock) 300mW modules put 100mW for real in 532nm?

I assumed the 300mW labeled ones would not output more than 30mW.

I have a <500mW labeled 405nm that outputs 90mW.

Hey, I tested my green pen laser with a 800nm IR filter over it, no visible light coming out, and it shoots out a slim beam of infared light. These pens are risky because red laser glasses (for green laser) cant protect you from IR and Infared will roast your retina at 200mw.

I would recommend you use a module from Lazerer, The DealExtreme ones are known to have been modified to give more current than the diode, Circuit and the crystal can handle thus killing your laser.

Hey- there is ANOTHER mod you can do too. One requires machining a NEW Battery tube. The Laser is Rated at least for 5 volts. You have a Longer tube made to hold ONE more battery. You go from 3v to 4.5v and I did this on a "50mw" You can do this with ANY from 5mw on up !! It brings it to its PEAK mw Rating safely.I dont know where I could have these made except with my friends lathe. It melts black tape and burns other items too.Well- thats what I did-anyone have a better source? Please Do Tell!

Hope this helps clarify. If the law comes after you you must show that you have some kind of legitimate use for the large lasers. This is a big IF. It has happened, but usally because some idiot is pointing them at cops or planes.

Laser pointers are regulated by both the ANSI and the FDA. Class one laser pointers are rated to less than 1mw of power. Class 2 laser pointers, red and green, are rated up to 5mw of power. In the United States any laser higher than 5mw cannot be classified as a laser pointer. Class 3 lasers put out up to 500mw, and class 4 lasers, which put out more than 500 mw cannot be sold legally as laser pointers. The gray area is that it is not illegal to own high power green lasers or red ones.
