hehehe, this song was amazing, is like a little movie itself, related the life of gangs during holydays...gangs, bikes, chicks, ehehhe, summer!! is one of the best Duran Duran songs, a excelent production and a great video, only Duran Duran can do it
I actually think that this song is just as good as 'Serious', so overall Liberty isn't a bad album really. This track still managed to sound 'current' when it was released in 1990, amidst the emerging Britpop/Dance takeover of that era, yet still has the energy and signature sound of their earlier records. Good stuff!
I was a junior in high school when Liberty came out, I know there are a lot of mixed reviews on the album but really, Duran Duran had awesome albums in the 90's, they were out of the 80's genre, and coming into their own, and the critics would bash them every chance they got, which made me love the band even more!
I quite love this song - its my "ear wurm" for today. I've listened to it 4 or 5 times I suspect. I love the synth pop/syncopation that Nick has in it. I love the gravelly sound Simon has later in the song as well. It's highly under-rated and fun. Hoping that they pull this one out and dust it off for the North American leg of the AYNIN tour!
well if you anything about DD this album was banned in uk cause it was about affairs! they got it overturned but this one of very best albums that they brought out!
They are the great band in the world, keep it up guys!!
This is one of my favorite Duran albums, came out when is was 15. It was so unique, and the energy and sentiment behind it spoke to me greatly during that time in my life...and still does to this day.
I totally agree with you. The early 80's were mainly brit pop, madonna and michael jackson, early MTV bands. The mid-80's were the metal hairband era with BonJovi, Motley Crue, etc. Then the late 80' and early 90's it went into "club music" and hip hop, namely Paula Abdul, Vanilla Ice, Boys II Men, etc. Then came grunge music in the 90's. The late 80's and early 90's was definately a confusing time for a lot of musicians and not knowing which direction to go.
However saying that, Duran Duran stuck to their thing and survived, where many artists couldn't. I went to their concert in 2005 in a smaller venue and I have to say the music was timeless and everyone felt like they time travelled back to the early 80's..great show and awesome atmosphere!
As I recall (can't be bothered with Google) this track did chart well in the UK so it was not a total flop album, but, as usual, many years after a release you go back and listen to Duran's stuff and sure enough this track and a few others are good
Previously I hadn't really cared for Duranduran until this came out, and it took me a while to get used to it but now I think it rocks. It's my fave song by them up there with Ordinary World. Interesting song for them, fusing electro pop with smatterings of heavy guitar riffs and that cheesy 60's organ tops this song well. And Warren Cucurollo has a fucking nice rack too. :D
eilesprit are great for DD rariteies (or any band/singer really) been using them since 91 when I brought the Japanese Liberty CD for the extra tracks. Always brought the Japanese version of their albums ever since for the extra tracks.
I had the cassette single for this song(now long lost)...the b-side was a song calle "Yo bad azzizi"...a bit of "Is there something I should Know" remix...now I can't find it anywhere!!!!!!!
Yet another underrated classic by Duran Duran - it was only a minor hit in the UK but it's a great summer song, fantastic tune. The Liberty album was a great album as well so if you haven't got it, get it - Great tunes such as Liberty, Serious and My Antartica
Just finished reading al 23 pages of comments...Laught my head off!! I realise that for about 4 years people have been asking why this album "liberty" wasn't a hit because it has good songs that still have a reverence in today's world. That is just the thing with this great band. It doesn't matter what time you are living in! The 80's, 90's or the 21st century DD makes a sound that is timeless and that my friends is THE POWER of DURAN DURAN.
Liberty is one of my favorite Duran Duran albums. It is so different, yet so in keeping with who they are. It boggles the mind that not more people enjoy DD because their music is so head-and-shoulders above the current drivel inundating the airwaves! Of course it does not help that they don't pander to the mindless consumers of music with lyrics that are smart and tongue-in-cheek, but I would rather listen to them in a loop than having to suffer through Ke$ha and co-hort.
so catchy, driving beat, funny, the whole thing about this song and the brill video really WORKS so well together...I remember being 18 the summer this came out, it floored me instantly, I recorded it off MTV & Im glad I did cuz MTV Europe never put it on rotation, they played it just about twice and it vanished without a trace. But then 1990 was all about Snap and Madonna, and btw, nothing really good ever got played after about 1988 so I naturally became a detective to get to the good stuff
This is one of my FAVORITE D2 albums! Very strange & fun at the same time. No matter which direction their music goes, they will always be my favorite bands...
Genial Sonido sin duda la transicion de los 80s a los 90s...mi preferida de Duran Duran, estos recuerdos de mi juventud siempre sonaran en mimente hasta el dia de mi muerte...
A few comments: This video is simply one of the top DD videos ever made. The song is amazing. The off tune keyboards and the guitar work on this make it so catchy and interesting. This song got lost and should have been a huge hit. The rest of the album was one of my boys weaker contributions, though some of the songs like Serious and All Along The Water are impressive.
I think 1990 was a turning point for many bands. They were between 80's and 90's. Duran duran members are good and talented musicians, they managed to survived and released interesting albums such as the wedding album and metazalland.
Liberty was a rather obscure Duran Duran album which came out in 1990 when I was eleven years old and even though I technically grew up listening to Duran Duran, I wasn't familiar with this album until about 1998 or so. I now own a copy of Liberty on disc and the only puzzlement I have is, "Where has this album been all my life?" I love it now and the songs Violence of Summer and Serious are my true favourites.
What's that supposed to mean? Just because I never have owned all of their discs doesn't mean I'm not a big fan. What makes you feel you have a right to scream at me and lecture me?
@HoldOnToYourDream Don't worry about such comments. Nobody can dictate who or what a "real" fan is. Loving Duran Duran music is enough to make you a true Duranie!
Liberty is my favorite album by far. I used to get cussed at by mof their music, my Duranie friends for that fact, and now they have all come around to liking it too. Duran Duran is often ahead of its time in terms of musical trends, and I guess that play against them oftentimes -especially when it comes to actual album sales. But, unlike so other bands from the 80s (looking at you, U2), they are not afraid to step out of the box , and for that they will remian my idols until the end of time.
i'm really happy to notice than..more and more people are now beginning to appreciate that real dark hidden jewel of a varied album called Liberty, it seems!..so totally distant from the so-called influences people (falsely) wanted Duran simply belonged to (Japan blablas, etc etc!): sure, that album is intelligent!, totally different, annoucing the years later electroclash movement themas, talking openly about drugs, sex, violence, etc..'funnily' or not..disturbed many close minded people..*)
I LOVE THIS SONG!!! I LOVE THIS VIDEO!! I LOVE THE ALBUM!!! I soooo wish they would perform it live again! I hate the way the album gets dissed or ignored. & I wish the guys wouldn't do that 2. This song is fantastic & there is nothin wrong with it! Can't believe it's nearly 20yrs old! Still as fresh as eva! Simon is SO gorgeous & JT looks gr8 2. My perfect hot, summer anthem. x
I liked quite a few of Duran's early singles, but I remember *not* liking this when it came out, possibly because the style was different.
Listening now, it's frustrating because it sounds like there's a great song in there waiting to get out (nice hook) but it never quite gets there and ends up being repetitive.
this video IS in the greatest hits dvd its hidden in an easter egg go to serious on gallery le duran go to liberty album and click play at the top this will play with an interview
I hadn't seen this video in quite a while. I don't know why they didn't add it to the greatest dvd. They look like they had a blast making this vid. John looks so sexy in this.
jajaja no fue un chiste, aparte no es que se paresca pero no se me acuerdo del himno xD igual me encanta el tema! che esta bueno tu canal, pase hace un rato, a mi tmb me gustan los guns y los pilots jajaja
This is possibly the only Duran Duran album which is sub-par. (Yeah, even RCM is better than Liberty... and I'm saying this as a hardcore Duranie lol.)
I don't find any of these songs on Liberty "catchy". They just don't have that lasting quality like "Hungry" or "I Don't Want Your Love".
Serious was okay... but that was about this.
And Simon is hot in this video, of course. =] Cheers.
@MissNovemberTuesday i hear that..even though i'm a dude...duran and this SN are my top two alltime bands. and i like that SN of yours "bend your rubber rules"
@IIIIdepechemodeIIII I am always happy to find male Duranies. We sometimes affectionately call them Durmanies. ;-D Do you post on any of the boards? I am on DDM and Mark's board fairly regularly as well as FB, Twitter and MySpace.
@MissNovemberTuesday I'm a guy, and I've liked DD for years. My fondness has ebbed and flowed at times, but I think they're a great band and seriously underappreciated songwriters!
i dont care what you say Duran Duran are the best band ever! ,and red carpet massacre is an amazing album ,i havent heard a single bad album yet . they are gods and the dont get the respect they diserve.

I thought DD were much better when Warren Cucurrello was a member.

=] Cheers.

Wow. Nice to see another of my type in here --- a hardcore Duranie!

@hersmart74 There are quite a few of us really. Me - lifelong hardcore Duranie. Loved them since 1981 and always will.

My fondness has ebbed and flowed at times, but I think they're a great band and seriously underappreciated songwriters!

this is the worst era of duran duran..the video is incredibly shite and their talent was having an hiatus which ended in 93.
