The removal of the glass steagall act was NOT the problem. It should have been made clear that with de-regulation the banks were on their own. Personally I think that all banks should have an account available backed by government bonds that simply held the money, & let the banks provide other banking services & accounts. Not only would this increase financial literacy, it would make it clearer wether people lost their money because of bad choices, or because of bank irresponsibility.

I think you are confused... perhaps you should break out your history books. Roosevelt's projects if you look at the data did not lead to any real changes during the depression. After WWII we saw the larges tax cut in American history to that point, and huge shrinking of the government and the adoption of conservatie ideas we saw an economic triumph. And the Secretary of State Marshal bailed out the whole Europe.

Allow me to enlighten you. Yes in dollars the US has the largest debt, but also we by far have the largest GDP, and GNP. The US's debt as a percetage of GDP is signficantly lower then the entitlement states of Europe. European design requires the government to take in a radical amount of revnues. The US is only recently expanding its government powers and responsibilties. Remember just a few years ago America was running a surplus. All americans are now trying to shrink the government.
