  • Q!

  • Tasha Yar is still alive.

  • The series started "78 years after the days of Kirk and Spock." That was in the original promo.

  • Did I just see the introduction of tentacle porn in America? And to think that everyone believed that it was imported from Japan, but we already had it all along!

  • So they're making it better by making the special effects easier to spot as fake?

  • @shubbuck I know. I wasnt sure about the giant space jellyfish was real or not until I saw how fake it looked on blueray.

  • @shubbuck Took the words out of my mouth, we are capable of letting our minds fill in the minute details.

  • Freaking Shiny.

  • Spoilers, the thing is a weird thing

  • falling in love all over again !

  • Lucas could learn from the people who did this...

  • AWESOME. Now only the stories will seem dated...

  • :/ Now everyone's going to see the mistakes, strings, not-to-scale sand grains.. Amazing work, nonetheless!

  • Cant wait to see it

  • OMG i cant wait to get blitzed and watch this in HD..

  • OMG cant wait to see this again..

  • OMG cant wait to see this again.. Get blitzed and watch them all!

  • is that ermakul?

  • I'm more of a Star Trek guy myself, but it's nice to see that Star Wars is finally getting the HD treatment it deserves.

  • @jw3st0n You have left me with confusion.

  • I've died and gone to heaven :''')

  • so what?

  • 5 people are not making it so.

  • I want it! I want it! I want it! I want it! I want it! I want it! I want it! I want it! I want it! I want it!

  • I WANT WIDE FRAME OF TROIS ASSSSS

  • If they presented it in 16:9, there would likely be equipment or crew visible because even though they shot with a wider frame, HDTV didn't exist in the late 80's/early 90's so they always knew it would be shot for a 4:3 aspect ratio. From the looks of things it looks like we'll still be getting a slightly wider frame anyway and the difference is astonishing between the video tape master and this straight-from-the-negative remaster.

  • I suspect it wouldn't be too difficult to go in and remove the equipment in the software they have today. I remember watching them clean up TOS. They were coping and pasting parts of one frame into another. Just imagine how much better that software is today on modern multi-teraFLOP computers.

  • @AdrianCoyote nah they'd just fill it in with studio magic

  • @AdrianCoyote Actually, in one of the episodes, you can see a little microphone at the very top of the screen. I guess that's kinda relevant.

  • It's too bad they can't cg out the crappy stories from the first couple of seasons.

  • Q?!

  • P'Kard from Star TREK will be there.

  • It...it's beautiful.

  • i'm sorry, i own the regular dvds,. and they are by far not that shitty looking as they show here

  • @lega2108 agreed! I watch my DVD's regularly and look just fine on my HDTV "as is"

  • @lega2108 Agreed, they always do this! You look in any department store at an HD/Standard compare! The standard look almost unwatchable!

  • @lega2108 Haha, I like your comment, but I too own the regular DVD boxsets and the Farpoint episodes especially have some serious grading and light problems compared to the later episodes. I agree that a vast majority of the episodes still look fantastic. They've just cleverly used one of the worst looking episodes as a comparison.

You should check them out again, especially when Picard is in Q's courtroom, it's like he's standing in the dark!

  • Poor me, I'll have to watch all of TNG all over again!

  • Anyone know where we can preorder this?

  • @MunnitChops - No official release date has been given at this time. But it looks likely to be released towards the end of this year.

  • @woohooboy Actually the official release date was given around the same time the whole thing was announced. Check Amazon- comes out January 31st.

  • @MunnitChops Amazon, comes out January 31st.

  • So its basically like any digitization of an old show/movie. Its like looking at my old tape of water world and the standard dvd version of it, colors are brighter, and on my HD tv you can't tell its just an old DVD not a brand new blue ray disc lol

  • @SirToshley hence the joke about spoilers and the winky face

  • Most television shows of this era were shot on film with the post-production, editing and transfer being done on video and as a result there is a notable difference in picture quality. With the advent of HD TV and blu-ray DVD, it's nice to know that some of these programs are getting the proper treatment that they deserve.

It's going to be a massive undertaking since TNG ran for seven years and there are THOUSANDS of reels that require the upgrade. But the end result looks absolutely great!

  • Troi's butt in HD? DO WANT.

  • @SuperAhmed1337 Ensign Robin Lefler in glorious HD? ALSO WANT.

  • @ovinophile holy crap! she is the hottest!! lol.

  • oh wow, i love star wars

  • Man those Mr. Clean erasers work on everything.

  • They should just remake the series, new actors, new aspect ratio 16:9 , 7680x 4320 resolution.

Because a HD remake is kind off pointless, they are already introducing the new 4000 x 2000 resolution screen at CES, by 2015 8K will be available.

  • @Zarnikon How about no.

  • @Zarnikon They'll be doing this right now at a much higher resolution than Blu-ray/current HD, then downsizing it to HD for this release. They'll then re-release later at the even higher resolution.

HD is not pointless, thousands of fans will buy this, then they'll buy it again when it's even higher res.

  • They really need to write spoilers alert on that clip ;-)

  • @cantorock Chances are most people who are interested in watching this have seen the first goddamn episode of the series.

  • As for aspect ratio, you likely don't want to see the thing in 16x9. A few years back someone goofed royally with a BACK TO THE FUTURE release, and you could see things like mechanical supports under the flying car, and stuff like that. They'd cropped it wrong from the original negatives, and showed things never meant for the final version. (Stuff everyone knew would be cropped out.) TNG was always meant to be seen in 4x3, so that's likely how they made it. Widescreen might not be possible.

  • @hakavon indeed, same f or the DVDs of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Always planned for square tvs, so when they dumped it to wide screen, there were sooooo many mistakes. crash mats, mikes, cameras, special fx placeholders, peoples lips not moving despite their voices sounding... all of it hidden when aired right, but exposed on wide screen.

  • @hakavon They went back to the original film footage and RE-EDITED the entire show from the purest source... much more work than "sort of cleaning up" the film

  • Comment removed

  • maybe they can replace klingons with species that don't totally suck too

  • @annoianoid Please elaborate. What new age rubbish?

  • "4:3 is the way the show was originally intended to be watched"-CBS

Fine by me. I really don't mind the side bars. I'm just glad they're re-releasing it in HD.

Actually, I bet the 16:9 film probably has set or prop edges in it, or microphones in the camera view. LOL They're just saying it's meant for 4:3, so they don't have to spend a ton of time and money editing out mistakes, in the borders that were never meant to be seen. Or not, who knows.

  • There are lights, microphones and stage hands behind those black bars. Trust them when they say it's better seeing it formatted the way it was intended to be seen.

  • I'm officially impressed!

  • There remastering them to the old 4:3 which is a big mistake. (in my opinion)

I was so looking forward to 16:9 (widescreen), and i cant stand black bars.

    Very disappointed.

  • @iJamieMoore Since the episodes were originally made for 4:3, the only way to get 16:9 is by cutting off the top and bottom of the frame. THAT would be a big mistake. You can probably make that mistake yourself if you like though, since some TVs have a "zoom" mode that will crop it for you.

  • @DrSprayPepper No, they shot it in full 35mm film. They do have it all in widescreen. They might be releasing a widescreen version too. (i really hope they do!)

The reason they give for cropping it again to 4:3 is: "4:3 is the way the show was originally intended to be watched"-CBS. :/

They are saying that, if they show the sides, there wont be much going on in them, as back then because TV was 4:3, all the actors stood in the 4:3 zone.

But i would sooner have boring sides then BLACK BARS :/

  • @iJamieMoore "Full 35" can mean 4:3, as in Academy aperture. I don't know about this show specifically, but actors stand in the "safe zones," and likewise equipment may be in frame outside the safe zones. Also VFX may have only been created for the aperture they intended. Meaning it could be non-trivial to create the version you want.

"Boring sides" alone could take you right out of the action if it's awkwardly empty... I say save your enthusiasm for shows designed for the format.

  • @DrSprayPepper Yea your right it was shot at "1.375:1" not "1.78:1" Which is a real shame. but just one of those things i guess.

(i was under the (false) impression that it was shot at "1.78:1". i don't know why.

But probably because i know for a fact that StarGate SG1 was shot on 35mm at "1.78:1". StarGate, StarTrek, StarWars, its hard to remember what was shot on what.

    And that's my excuse.) lol

  • @iJamieMoore How would they do 16:9? Wasn't it shot in 4:3? So either we crop stuff off from the top and the bottom, and I'm sure NO ONE would complain about that! Or you stretch it, again not good. Or you digitally add to the scene... which really can't be done convincingly yet. So how would you get 16:9?

  • @Kelvington it was shot on full 35mm film. (so they have it even wider then "16:9 widescreen"

The problem is, they have "decided" to again crop it at 4:3. So once again we loose the sides to the dreaded black bars.

The reason they give for cropping it again to 4:3 is: "4:3 is the way the show was originally intended to be watched"-CBS. :/

But i was really looking forward to the extra footage. even if there was nothing much going on in it. it would still have been better IMO.

  • @iJamieMoore See I was under the impression (and I could easily be wrong) that it was shot at full 35mm native aspect ratio which is 1.375:1 which is just slightly bigger than the 4:3 ratio of 1.33:1. If true then there's just a tiny, tiny amount they aren't showing us. If it were shot in a 16:9 and there's just stuff on the edges, that could easily be taken out and cleaned.

  • @Kelvington I stand corrected. You are 100% correct. The show can never be 16:9.

i just did some more research, and found out that (sadly) it indeed was shot on 35mm film at a ratio of "1.375:1" not "1.78 : 1" -IMDB

I guess there's no chance of a later widescreen release then :/ lol

  • @iJamieMoore Thanks, it's all very confusing, but I'll admit, the stuff they have showed us so far is amazing.

  • Spoiler Alert!!!
