  • WOW.....it sounds just like Karen.

  • What a VERY sweet lady...so modest. Keiko you were absolutely BRILLIANT ! I'm sure "somewhere up there" Karen was applauding.

  • wow, she sings exactly like her with a little japanese accent but thats okay. awesome.

  • Her voice goes right through you like Karen's, A-maz-ing!

  • breathtakingly beautiful

  • That was absolutely breathtaking

  • that is the most amazing cover of karen carpenter i have ever seen! awesome job! well done!

  • nice voice for a japanese woman...

  • Oh wow this is lovely! Not quite Karen but the closest I have ever heard. Kudo's to Keiko! I really enjoyed this.

  • Holy crap, she's good! A *lot* like Karen! You go, girl!

  • they say imatation is the most sincere form of flatery.

  • Keiko awsume tribute.......and its plain to see she loves Karen just as much....... Sugoi!!!!!

  • Congratulations Keiko for doing such a great job.

  • I watched this with such admiration for the lovely Keiko, i was in tears by the end as i could see so much respect for Richard Carpenter and his wonderful sister, Karen (such as the Japanese are)..... I think Keiko is fantastic...what a star*

  • I would love meet Richard Carpenter and sit down with him and have a beer or two and talk about Karen, She is my all time favorite female singer, she was the best.

  • Absolutely fantastic ... :)

  • This is beautiful, but Karen was was more beautiful. She had more resonance in the lower registers. Keiko is nice to listen to, but I can still find recordings of Karen.

  • i miss karen a lot ;(

  • @wwjdcross1 she not gone as long as we remember her

  • The voice is very close, but she needs to work on her unnunciation and long e sounds.

  • The voice is pretty darn close. She needs to work on her unnunciation and long e sounds.

    Very nice.

  • @bandmasterjf and you need to work on your spelling --it's "enunciation." ...guess nobody's perfect.

  • he is just like arnel pineda of the philippines, the karen carpenter of japan wow

  • It was such a humble gesture from both Keiko and Richard. Both were emotionally charged when she finished. The mos beautiful video I've seen in many years.

  • Great voice I also miss Karen Carpenter my all time favorite

  • Amazing ..as good as a Karen Carpenter tribute as you'll ever find in the world .

  • Just superb and spellbinding.

  • sounds just like her!

  • That's what makes this performance even better, that you can hear her accent.

  • Just amazing ... 5stars !!

  • Once again, a close copy. Yet, again, I can tell that the imitator is a talented Japanese woman. A excellent performance of the song "I need to be in love." As a Karen Carpenter imitation it was still pretty good, despite the lingering Japanese accent.

  • WOW!! she is just amazing!!!

  • Well, I could not hold back my tears...

  • Amazing voice. I can almost cry. Thanks for this one.

  • What a kind act of love from Richard, he was so nice with her..

  • This is a great tribute to Karen Carpenter and keeps Karen's memory alive with us as the singer does a tremendous job singing one of Karen's favorite songs. You can tell the singer has a lot of respect for Karen as she becomes emotional especially singing it in front of Richard.

I hope we see more of her sing songs from the Carpenters, I bet seeing this live would be awesome to watch.

  • When I first heard Karen's voice on the air, I knew this was a special lady. I was just starting in radio then and the Carpenters are one of my favorites and in my opinion the best female voice of all time.

  • even without english its still hauntingly karen's voice. amazing gift. i for one loved it and will for a long time.

  • This is what we called "VOICE RESEMBLANCE."

  • freaking awesome.. omg..

  • Several Asians throughout the years can more readily imitate American singers. This is not a put-down, it's a natural talent many can project themselves or better yet, inspire to be. Check out the little pinay Charice with such an amazing voice indeed.

  • Feelings and sentiments cannot be faken!!!

  • This is gut-wrenching.

  • Richard is as weird as sack of frogs and snakes...Where was he on the day his sister pegged it?

  • I was so amazed to hear her voice - I would agree wholeheartedly with Chairbrowser60 in that she sounds so much like Karen...I still get chills up and down the spine...

  • Her voice really is beautiful. Perfect. A gift is a gift - enjoy it, because this type of talent is most rare indeed.

  • 99% pitch-perfect impersonation of Karen....she was one the greatest

  • Must have been bittersweet for Richard.:-(

  • Karen Carpenters always in my heart miss her voice so much....love her so much!

  • That's stunning!

  • She's a lovely girl with a lovely voice.

  • Aww, she cries. What a sweetheart..

  • I`m in AWE

  • Wow, Beautiful!

  • Wow. That is beautiful. Ignore some of negative comments here for they are just jealous.

  • I agree with rustydj and skinnwalker13, don't hate on this Japanese young lady. She performed with Richard Carpenter's blessing and it was very emotional for the both of them. Thank you for posting this performance!

  • she`s actually pretty damned good ! and I cant believe all the remarks from the racist pieces of low life shit that have been posted ! get a life assholes !

  • 391 japanese people think she sounds like karen

  • she sounds about 10% like karen even if you take away the accent, and i consider myself an afficianado of karen's miraculous voice.

  • @No1KCfan6 Just because you consider yourself that doesn't mean others agree LOL

  • get off youtube GOOK

  • @txlastrebel DUDE, PLEASE DON'T CALL HER A GOOK...SHE'S A NIP-----GET IT STRAIGHT THROUGH YOUR INSANED IN THE MEMBRANE!!!

  • @phambo101 Actually, I believe she's a "slope."

  • Comment removed

  • amazing woman, she is highly respectful to karen C, just want to bring some of karen's memory back to life, not to take credit as a wannabe. Some stupid crap comments from arrogant americans are shameful. I hope they die, btw, america is dying because they lost their old ways. This japanese singer is more karen than most americans today.

  • karen chink carpenter. not bad not bad.

  • OMG she gave me goosebumps

  • wow, this is bizarre. she sounds 98% like Karen Carpenter.

  • Karen has been reincarnated through this Japanese woman. Amazing and thrilling to hear her sing.

  • She does sound surprisingly like Karen Carpenter, but with elements of Japanese accent coming through.

  • One word - WOW

  • I don't see how Richard kept from crying! I cry every time I watch it but to actually be there would really be overwhelming!

  • This really took me back! Amazing!

  • Amazing!!!l Love it!!!

  • wow she is amazing, sounds just like Karen

  • I would never have thought it wasn't Karen if i was just listening to it. What a talent!

  • amazing !!!!

  • @4:35, Richard looks like he is overwhelmed with emotion. This must have been such a surreal experience for him. Keiko Touge, sounds as close to Karen as any singer that I have ever heard.

  • Karen died of a broken heart when it came right down to it. Very sad. She was a beautiful woman of pure and rare talent we just don't see anymore. In a word she was awesome! How great that people are still listening to her music decades later ! That's saying a lot !

  • amazing talent and with so much respect. wipe the tears away and fill you heart with happiness for Karen is listening to you from above with joy in her heart!

  • We all miss Karen... But Geez, ChristianLennon1979, have some respect for the fact that one woman loves Karen's music just as much to move past her native accent to emulate Karen's music. I'm pretty sure any of us Americans without knowledge of the Japanese language would sound stupid if we tried to sing in Japanese. Beautiful tribute, and if Karen were still alive, I don't think she would criticize anyone emulating her in tribute.

  • Why did such an angel have to die. She brought so much happiness to the world. Anerexia is hard for me to understand.

  • Wow! She sounds pretty dawg gone close to Karen.

  • Is it so bad that she loves the Carpenters music so much that she dedicated a lot of time and effort to emulate Karen as closely as possible? You can see how emotional it is for her, it's not a personal mission to obtain fame and fortune. All you people saying nasty things should be ashamed of yourself.

  • wow amazing...Karen had the best angelic voice ever!! This is a flattering version but nothing like Karen....Miss you

  • Dam nice

  • WOW

A stunning performance from Keiko Touge-bravo,bravo.

Here is my break down:to be on stage WITH Richard Carpenter-sing his sisters song-LIVE on tv,,,,,,and then to deliver such a fine piece of music,,,,do this: close your eyes and just LISTEN to her voice,,,,,this is the closest we will come to hear Karen again.Let's just enjoy this talent-let it embrace you again, and for a short while----karen is once again singing to us.

    Thank you,

    Henry

  • Absolutely THE BEST!!! So close to Karen,IT just blowes my mind!!!!

  • She absolutely NAILED it!!! LOVE her!!!!!!!!!!!..I cant tell the difference!!!!

  • It's really hard to sing a lot of lyrics in the short moments to fit the melody.

  • no one is ever going to replicate karen , its impossible but her tone is similar to karen and although not really a sound alike i think it is a beautiful tribute and richard would be the one to accurately assess her and he says very very well done so ... :-)

  • Pathetic, NOT KAREN, Miss you so much Karen xxxx

  • Truely amazing...it is so lovely to hear somone sing like Karen...i know i wish i couls for i love all her songs...Beautiful Keiko...simply beautiful...xxx

  • Amazing Keiko, amazing!

  • This is proof enough that great singing does not have to mean one has to BELT out the notes.

  • how you know thats not karen in a different life i mean born again

  • Wow that japanese lady is pure talent and sounds so much like Karen and just sings so great wow!!

  • @arkansastrash320

Check out also Arnel who kinda replaces the lead singer from Journey Hahaha!

    Sugoi desu!

  • Karen had such an amazing silky husky voice. It was simply perfection I have never heard anyone convey that much emotion without vocal tricks just amazing. I thought we'd never have a singer that even came close to being on karen's level i'm glad the world at least gets a bit of her back. There are also certain Karen songs that i can honestly say anyone but Karen would sound like total crap singing it since they cannot attain her depth this is one of them and I think this lady really cameclose

  • Oh wow... this is awesome.. She sounds so much like her!

  • She apparently spells her name "Toge" not "Touge". Here's her website is togekeiko

  • How wonderful that she got to meet Richard Carpenter!

  • please don't complain and compare, just be glad to find out that Karen is still with us, just in a different way, remember "Sing"? "Sing of good things not bad..."

  • WOW! Simply beautiful,Karen would be so happy. kepp her flame burning Keiko!

  • One of my favourite songs ... Keiko, you've mastered the voice of Karen Carpenter.

Yes Gabriel (below), I too had tears .. Keiko is simply beautiful in voice and beauty ... Namaste Keiko .. In Love and Light, Jeff.

  • Amazing voice, Karen with a slight accent, love it.

  • WOW...... she did sound like Karen..

  • Thank God he finally gave the poor girl a hug!

  • can't stop eyes blurred with tears.............

  • Cool! I like it.

  • I believe Karen was there.

  • Oh my. I can't believe Karen Carpenter has returned!

  • Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant!

  • She's very good. She sounds like KC. I mean, I can tell the difference maybe because of the accent but the range is like Karen. Bravo!

  • she does sound very much like karen, and i'm glad that richard like's it too. it look's like he's about to cry as well. which in many way's tell's us that he's pleased with her singing this song. i hope she keep's on singing cause she very good.

  • I'm impressed!

  • love her!

  • Around 2:00 I started to cry. AMAZING interpretation, especially for someone who doesn't seem to speak English.

  • Very beautiful. Thank you.

  • uncanny

  • My face started to collapse by tears when listening this tiny girl whose voice resembled the glory of Karen's in so many ways... Mr Carpenter delayed too much in hugging her...

  • Love the voice.

  • PERFECT!!!!!!!!

  • Wonderful job. She nailed the lower and higher register notes and has a lovely voice and I enjoyed listening to her sing this song.

  • What I think is strange is that she doesn't seem to speak English but sings in it none the less.

Here voice sounds like Karen's in this vid. Especially in the lower keys she pulls it off.

  • This young lady did a beautiful job singing this song, she really did. Yes she has a lot of "Karen" in her voice (including her speaking voice!) as she has just the right tonal quality that Karen has in her singing and it came through very clearly. I can imagine how difficult this would have been to sing with Richard standing only a few feet away without totally falling apart, but by god she did it ! As a huge Carpenters fan I am giving this 5 out of 5 stars. Brilliantly done.

  • . . . and you can see by her reaction at the end of the song what it meant to her.

  • Lovely song. One of their very best.

Like most other posters I think the voice is actually a fairly close "match" to Karen's - i.e. that similar tone ! "Fair play" to her. And a nice tribute to get Richard over to hear it. (Bet she was nervous !!).

Anyone know if RIchard still performs - and with anyone else ?

  • Wow! beautifully voice.

  • Just like Karen she can lose a few pounds LOL She looks like a mexican taco worker....

  • @MrTagapinasako Too bad you are such an asshole and can't appreciate the music and the artist for what they are.

  • @MrTagapinasako You, sir, are an enormous douchenipple and a complete moron. Go troll and hate elsewhere.

  • Amazing likeness.

  • The right voice coming out of the wrong face! I think Richard had the same opinion!

  • beautifully done!

  • AMAZING, She's so close i got goose bumps.

    Beautiful voice

  • Wow! I listened to her on a different video here on YouTube with her doing "Sing" and I could detect on that video slight inflections of her native language, although it was excellent nevertheless. But this was just phenomenal! I miss Karen. She and I shared a wink back in the early '70's when I snapped her photo on stage from about 6 feet away in Arnold Hall at the Air Force Academy. She is missed yet always with us as evidence by this wonderful performance.

  • I know Karen is smiling down from heaven on this girl. I don't think Richard is all that bad I think he was stunned to hear his sister coming out of this girl. Maybe he isn't openly affectionate in public. Great job Keiko!

  • I think Karen would be honored by her talent. I know it gives me goosebumps. RIP Karen. We miss you!

  • Could Richard be any more of a cold stiff robot here? They probably had to hold up a cue card to tell him to give the girl a damn hug already. What a jerk.

  • @itsahellofaname Think it may be his awareness of cultural differences. I reckon he wanted to hug her but I don't think they would do that to a "stranger", hence his reticence (and she was bowing to him beforehand).

  • @itsahellofaname Did it ever occour to you that he was in SHOCK from hearing someone who sounded just like his sister? (Well... in HIS Mind, sounding just like her.)

    8P

  • muito lindo parabens

  • A very beautiful tribute. Thank you Keiko1

  • She definitely has that low range tone power that Karen had that made her voice special.

  • Wow!needs just a touch more work-some parts much better than others.

Very good though-this girl will go places-couldn't pick a better artist to emulate.

    thanks for posting enjoyed it

  • Wonderful interpreation!

  • Very close. Of course there will always be only one Karen. Great rendition.

  • This is awesome...beautiful...Karen would be pleased I'm sure...it's so very close! Thanks for posting this wonderful rendition!

  • LOL Tamori-san is there! xD *I'madork*

I dearly miss Karen and Richard. thanks so much for sharing Keiko-san's talent~

  • Great voice!

Karen's voice is the best of all voices I ever heard and this is close!

I would be happy if we could hear new Carpenters songs.

Therefore I am very happy that Richard heard it.

I would be out of my mind happy if Richard would sing with her and would produce some new CDs with the typical Carpenters harmonies but experimenting with new styles mixed by using the old one. Common hits in Carpenters style are my favorites (like Jambalaya & Mr. Postman).

Is there something in the loop?

  • Each time i watch the video makes me think of Karen and reach for something to wipe out the tears.

To those who are complaining about Keiko, be aware what Richard says @ the end: "very very well done"

  • @nimatoike Me To! I still to this day miss her!!!!!!!!

  • @nimatoike of course he was supposed to say that, it would be impolite if he didnt say ..

  • Thumbs Up if Pierre Got you Here

  • ... oopps i meant to say I hope she *isn't* limited to singing only the Carpenters.......

she has her own history and career to write :)

  • Remarkable, very beautiful, rich voice. And how amazing to sing so well in a language not her own. The accent adds a beautiful 'spice' to the the song. I really hope though she is limited to singing only the Carpenters stuff, I hope she is an even bigger success singing Japanese songs.

  • Unlike some people who have felt the need to minimize this wonderful lady's performance merely because she "isn't Karen", I can say this was a wonderful, very heart-felt performance of this classic song.

Keiko did a magnificent job and I for one am very thankful the Japanese do such a wondrous job of making it as close to the original as possible. It simply isn't necessary to start off with "Sorry folks" the way another poster did.

Much respect and congratulations to the Japanese :)

  • Amazingly beautiful. This performance almost took my breath away. I am in awe of Keiko's talented, deep, rich voice. Thank you. Thank you Richard for your blessing for Keiko. I never thought anyone could be as talented as Karen. So beautiful. Martha N.

  • Grande émotion......Japonaise et son frère Américain.......Grand moment ..super !

  • ah ces Asiatiques .....champion de la copie ...

  • she's really amazing.. ^_^

  • Sorry folks. She's got a magnificent voice. But there's so much more to Karen Carpenter than merely "sounding like her." This girl doesn't have the phrasing,, the voice and pitch control that Karen had. Is Keiko good? Yes.Extremely. But Karen was so damn close to perfect, Keiko will never be more than a good imitation of perfection. And if you don't believe me, really STUDY Karen's performances. But Keiko was very VERY good as Richard points out. But you can also see in his eyes: She's no Karen.
