  • wake up Bob..bubbling yourself as rival of The Clash makes you the biggest wanker...there is no rival to Clash...The Clash is the ONLY..

  • @waterloo2003 He said they were rivals in regards to selling records. I do not believe that Bob Geldoff thinks that the Boomtown Rats were better or more talented than the Clash.

  • Oh what I would do to turn back time and see him live. I would pay all the money in the world to see my hero. He's an absolute god to me. I'm getting his portrait tattooed on me this year :) R.I.P Joe <3

  • El mundo lloró cuando Strummer murió...

  • fuck bob geldof

  • Actually Joe was borned in Turkey and in any case his origins would be from England not Scotland.

  • @TheRubiiie Joe considered himself Scottish, English and Turkish. In that order.

  • Joe Strummer was scottish, not irish, and the Boomtown rats are dust compared to The Clash. Why is this man on the news? Prick.

  • I bawled like a baby when I heard this..........both my husband and I had the pleasure of knowing him, and were absolutely delighted about he and the Clash being inducted into the RR Hall of Fame...a bonafide Clash reunion would've been a wonderful sight to see. Incredibly intelligent, a razor sharp wit that could slice up a fool like so much cat food and a helluva nice guy, this world is all the richer for having had Joe Strummer in it. Thabks for everything my friend........

  • No no no. Not "the best" of all bands. They were the only band that mattered. R.I.P. Joe.

  • Well said Bob!!

    Respect.

  • Rivals of The Clash? LOL. The Boomtown Rats had a few decent songs, but they were never strong enough or punk enough to rival the Clash.

  • @corkbender

    .

Actually at that time in Britain the Rats were more popular than The Clash until 1981 or so and they WERE considered rivals on the pop charts, but I don't think anyone, including Sir Bob Geldof, would say that the Rats were a better band than The Clash.

  • @corkbender the only rivals to the clash at the time were the Jam - as far as quality! Though obviously the jam were more mod and pop than punk-

  • @salvadory The Jam were great, and you're correct, they weren't punk, although their pop-side didn't emerge until some of the later records. That said, the early Jam stuff was a lot harder than any of the Rats stuff IMO.

As for competition, London Calling put the Clash were up there in the stratosphere in terms of popularity, something which the Rats could only dream of.

  • @corkbender i would just add that while the clash released give em enough rope london calling and sandinista(my fav clash album) the jam released all mod cons setting suns and sound affects- id actually be hard pressed to pick between the two bands then though london calling is probally the strongest of the lot- and both bands ended on their biggest albums but the quality wasnt quite up to the past though i love both the gift and combat rock- throw in the damned and the uk was never better

  • @salvadory All the albums you list are fantastic, no doubt all are classics, and should be in the collection of anyone who is into punk. But unfortunately the Jam and the Damned were under-appreciated in the US at that time (which was when most people here were into crap like Huey Lewis and the News), whereas London Calling put the Clash onto a different plane.

  • rip joe

  • Rivals? To be rivals there has to be an element of competetion, and the clash win the boomtown rats EVERYTIME!!!

  • "rivals"???? Don't flatter yourself Geldof.

  • get over yourself bob

  • Punk will never die

  • punks not gone!!!!

  • Bob Geldof WTF???

  • Well, he used to be a punk as well....

  • all the people talkin about him are fuckin squares

  • could that have been a worse way to break it to the world

  • Comment removed

  • i agree with chazstrew..what a bad interview..feicin bbc

  • i agree about geldof but he is the "allowed" face of the punk movement after band aid. back in 77 the rats was never taken serious by anyone. they was just in on the new wave thing. but if you got to have pop music. i suppose they was better than ABBA.remember what the charts was like prior to 77. check out what people was buying at the time. it makes you cringe when you look at the top 20 before punk exploded. new rose, white riot, god save the queen, by by rod stewart, abba, ect.

  • " i suppose (the Boomtown Rats) was better than ABBA"

I remember reading an interview with Joe Strummer in Rolling Stone magazine (I think) almost 30 years ago now, in which he said some nice things about ABBA. I think he said that "(ABBA) never gave you a turkey (of a song)" ... or something to that effect. Anyway, he thought they were a good pop group.

  • Bob fuckin Geldolf.

    U gotta be kidding.

No offence Bob, but The Clash wer a million times better than the Boomtown Rats.

Grrr...why is he talkin about him!?!?!

  • they wouldnt have grotty old punks talk about JOE on telly, simple.I mean look at that woman presenter...England UK newsreaders just looked untidy in 1975 now it's so corporate and stiff. when Ian Dury died Jon Snow had WILKO come to talk about his friend with a sad looking WILKO commenting on the passing of DURY. BroB Geldroof is a puppet the TV stations can phone up through his BoomRat headoffice cos they know he's not going to burp LIVE and his colectollextomy bag is always empty.

  • RIP Joe, WE'LL LOVE YOU 4EVER, WE'LL NEVER FORGET YOU.

The clash "from here to eternity".

  • This crazy fuck is off his rocker!

He doesn't know what the hell he's talking about, he can't stand still or straight, and he argued with Strummer. Don't argue with Joe.

btw, Jones was not his 'sidekick' he was his partner

  • i fucking HATE bob geldof! Piss off and die you crusty wanker!

RIP Joe, we'll never forget that dark day

  • Sad.

  • What is this lady talking about punk is not gone

  • and by the way...what the FUCK has Bob Geldof got to do with Joe Strummer??? Is geldof not talking a load of utter BULLSHIT here? Hes just a stupid old git who needs to get his head out of his arse. We all love you Joe

  • i saw an interview with him and he was claiming that his band the boomtown rats were a relevant part of the punk movement. my arse. rip joe

  • the clash were probably the first band i ever heard and i still listen to them every day.

my dad has always been a huge fan and he travelled all round england to see them live loads of times.

i remember the day we found out joe had died, me and my dad were mortified, he was such a huge influence to so many people, and he always will be.

    may he rest in peace.

    "know your rights"

    xo

  • Joe = beautiful. Simple as that. He was wonderful, albeit a mouthy little git :)

  • Joe Srummer..Legand.!...will NEVER EVER BE FORGOTEN!!....miss you!...R.I.Punk!xo

  • RIP JOE YOU WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED.

  • Strummer never liked Geldof.

Bob didnt call the Clash to play on BAND AID:::: !!!!

I dont like Mondays and You Bob too.

  • Geldof says that at about 3:40 - he and Strummer always argued but he really respected him.

  • Joe Strummer was a Punk Warlord!! He and The Clash is the reason I fell in love with music, and I miss him and his music. We have needed his voice as never before. Thanks Joe

  • Joe is the king of punk!!! He is my idol!!!

  • We miss ya Joe

  • HEART OF A LION!

  • Joe Strummer is the Legend. I will miss you forever!

  • this new hurted me =)

Sir Strummer, you're still the one!!!

  • aww :/

    i still remember that day

  • "incoherent nihilism" well said, Bob. That's the sex pistols.

The Clash empowers its listeners, and that's what makes them heads above other punk bands.

  • I'm weeping as I write this. Joe, we were lucky to have grown up hearing your music.

  • R.I.P Joe Strummer, a legend

  • Polemical?? Wha? Who talks like this??

  • Oh yeah, people, go see a fricking doctor regularly over 40. Think of what could have been saved if his heart condition had been caught. Terrible loss...only the good die young indeed.

  • The Boomtown Rats had a couple of songs that are in the punk history, but they are about a 3 compared to a 10 for the Clash. He didnt answer the question about Strummer dying so young. Maybe he wanted to emphasize the positive. it is weird that he talks about his respect for them growing. He was probably supremely jealous. The UK has thrown away its musical legacy by this point anyway. Bunch of greedy, uninspired gits the youth of today be.....

  • mkgreevy ... HarrytheHippo ... you have the brains of a shallot (that's between you both). He's not reading, you pudding. And Live Aid was the pinnacle of modern human existance. Arses.

  • You bunch of ungracious snots! Instead of using the space below to remember Joe, all you can do is slag Sir Bob of Badhairday off!?

  • Bob Geldoff I thought his name was Pink

  • You can tell that Geldof has prepared this speech - he keeps looking down at what he's written. Certainly there were people who knew Joe better than could have spoken about him without writing out a fucking essay first.

  • clearly, he has his hands behind his back and you have your head up your arse.

  • Clearly, he couldn't have put a piece of paper on a surface in front of him, nor could some bbc grunt be holding it for him to read. Or maybe he just has a weird tic where his eyes wander down all the time, and appear to be moving across a page.

  • Clear to me, anyway.

  • wtf is bob geldof doing there? he can piss off

  • I agree. Boomtown Rats I never considered punk. Look at him standing on his castle estate with sheep in the background. He probably eats them too! LOL! What the fuck has his band ever done? And what has he done except for putting on concerts that are terrible! And have not changed shit!

Long live Joe and his ideas!

    Question Authority! - Joe Stummer

  • joe strummer is a god amongst men and will never be forgotten. by why that cunt bob geldof is on here is anybodys guess. hes a contradicting fucker and knew nothing about punk or music for that matter. he said they were rivals in trying to sell records, but later said the clash werent about making money? make up your mind, bob, you fucking twat. he thinks hes a fuckin saint, well fuck him. clash werent trying to beat boomtown rats. nobody were, because they were shit. fucking twat.

  • rip joe...clash are the best!

  • RIP Joe

  • RIP Joe

  • RIP Joe....

Was Bob Geldof sitting on a rocking horse?

  • Punk music is gone!? What? You have to be kidding me. Joe helped start this music revolution and inspired future groups, punk is not gone and because of people like Joe, it will never die!

  • Punk music as we know it is gone.

  • just because punk is a wider range of bands, great and naff, and its more mainstream, doesnt mean its gone.

It's not as exciting because it's not as new, but its still exciting

  • Good on ya Joe!

  • love ya joe R.I.P.

  • here comes julian temple film about joe

    The Future Is Unwritten

    best wishes from peru

  • Joe changed my life when I was 13 and he changed it again when I was 39. The Clash were the punk Beatles

  • He shouldn't call Mick a sidekick. Mick was Joe's creative partner. Dumb Ass.

  • Nothing better than an emotionless, conceited tribute from Bob Geldolf! :) Fucking wanker.

  • typically inacurate / ignorant news reader, punk is NOT gone, and bob "im against the war... two seconds later im shaking tony blair's hand" geldof is full of shit aswell. smearing their shit all over what should've been a respectable piece on a sad loss. rip joe

  • See ya one day Joe.

  • do you need to go pee Bob?

  • JOE!!

  • My Generations John Lennon. R.I.P. JOE!!!

  • i miss you joe , thanks for helping me to think , peace
