@waterloo2003 He said they were rivals in regards to selling records. I do not believe that Bob Geldoff thinks that the Boomtown Rats were better or more talented than the Clash.
Oh what I would do to turn back time and see him live. I would pay all the money in the world to see my hero. He's an absolute god to me. I'm getting his portrait tattooed on me this year :) R.I.P Joe <3
I bawled like a baby when I heard this..........both my husband and I had the pleasure of knowing him, and were absolutely delighted about he and the Clash being inducted into the RR Hall of Fame...a bonafide Clash reunion would've been a wonderful sight to see. Incredibly intelligent, a razor sharp wit that could slice up a fool like so much cat food and a helluva nice guy, this world is all the richer for having had Joe Strummer in it. Thabks for everything my friend........
Actually at that time in Britain the Rats were more popular than The Clash until 1981 or so and they WERE considered rivals on the pop charts, but I don't think anyone, including Sir Bob Geldof, would say that the Rats were a better band than The Clash.
@salvadory The Jam were great, and you're correct, they weren't punk, although their pop-side didn't emerge until some of the later records. That said, the early Jam stuff was a lot harder than any of the Rats stuff IMO.
As for competition, London Calling put the Clash were up there in the stratosphere in terms of popularity, something which the Rats could only dream of.
@corkbender i would just add that while the clash released give em enough rope london calling and sandinista(my fav clash album) the jam released all mod cons setting suns and sound affects- id actually be hard pressed to pick between the two bands then though london calling is probally the strongest of the lot- and both bands ended on their biggest albums but the quality wasnt quite up to the past though i love both the gift and combat rock- throw in the damned and the uk was never better
@salvadory All the albums you list are fantastic, no doubt all are classics, and should be in the collection of anyone who is into punk. But unfortunately the Jam and the Damned were under-appreciated in the US at that time (which was when most people here were into crap like Huey Lewis and the News), whereas London Calling put the Clash onto a different plane.
i agree about geldof but he is the "allowed" face of the punk movement after band aid. back in 77 the rats was never taken serious by anyone. they was just in on the new wave thing. but if you got to have pop music. i suppose they was better than ABBA.remember what the charts was like prior to 77. check out what people was buying at the time. it makes you cringe when you look at the top 20 before punk exploded. new rose, white riot, god save the queen, by by rod stewart, abba, ect.
" i suppose (the Boomtown Rats) was better than ABBA"
I remember reading an interview with Joe Strummer in Rolling Stone magazine (I think) almost 30 years ago now, in which he said some nice things about ABBA. I think he said that "(ABBA) never gave you a turkey (of a song)" ... or something to that effect. Anyway, he thought they were a good pop group.
they wouldnt have grotty old punks talk about JOE on telly, simple.I mean look at that woman presenter...England UK newsreaders just looked untidy in 1975 now it's so corporate and stiff. when Ian Dury died Jon Snow had WILKO come to talk about his friend with a sad looking WILKO commenting on the passing of DURY. BroB Geldroof is a puppet the TV stations can phone up through his BoomRat headoffice cos they know he's not going to burp LIVE and his colectollextomy bag is always empty.
Geldof knows fuck all, i'm sick of hearin' this cunt and his dopey fackin' daughter, why can't he fackin' emigrate to fuckin' Rwanda and help build an orphanages or something! RIP Joe Strummer.
omfg geldof you muggy cunt "we were rivals as to selling records" your group was a fucking joke, you are a fucking joke your shite crap band was never taken seriously as a punk act,wot an utter prick
Fuck sir Bob Geldoff.Strummer hated everything u r and u stand for.The Boomtown rats were shite and u made your fortune by being a pompous twat, milking the poor for your own fiscal benefit.u r scum.
and by the way...what the FUCK has Bob Geldof got to do with Joe Strummer??? Is geldof not talking a load of utter BULLSHIT here? Hes just a stupid old git who needs to get his head out of his arse. We all love you Joe
Joe Strummer was a Punk Warlord!! He and The Clash is the reason I fell in love with music, and I miss him and his music. We have needed his voice as never before. Thanks Joe
Oh yeah, people, go see a fricking doctor regularly over 40. Think of what could have been saved if his heart condition had been caught. Terrible loss...only the good die young indeed.
The Boomtown Rats had a couple of songs that are in the punk history, but they are about a 3 compared to a 10 for the Clash. He didnt answer the question about Strummer dying so young. Maybe he wanted to emphasize the positive. it is weird that he talks about his respect for them growing. He was probably supremely jealous. The UK has thrown away its musical legacy by this point anyway. Bunch of greedy, uninspired gits the youth of today be.....
mkgreevy ... HarrytheHippo ... you have the brains of a shallot (that's between you both). He's not reading, you pudding. And Live Aid was the pinnacle of modern human existance. Arses.
You can tell that Geldof has prepared this speech - he keeps looking down at what he's written. Certainly there were people who knew Joe better than could have spoken about him without writing out a fucking essay first.
Clearly, he couldn't have put a piece of paper on a surface in front of him, nor could some bbc grunt be holding it for him to read. Or maybe he just has a weird tic where his eyes wander down all the time, and appear to be moving across a page.
I agree. Boomtown Rats I never considered punk. Look at him standing on his castle estate with sheep in the background. He probably eats them too! LOL! What the fuck has his band ever done? And what has he done except for putting on concerts that are terrible! And have not changed shit!
joe strummer is a god amongst men and will never be forgotten. by why that cunt bob geldof is on here is anybodys guess. hes a contradicting fucker and knew nothing about punk or music for that matter. he said they were rivals in trying to sell records, but later said the clash werent about making money? make up your mind, bob, you fucking twat. he thinks hes a fuckin saint, well fuck him. clash werent trying to beat boomtown rats. nobody were, because they were shit. fucking twat.
