I trained like hell and were in the best condition of my life and in one route dislocated my shoulder. After 2 months still cant climb. Fucking pisses me of. =(
of course you do, they aren't just limited to pinchs, Thumb Spragging can be brilliant for crimps, it's the strongest digit you have, use it well! you can curl it over the tops of your fingers whilest working 2 finger half crimps and itll increase your hold and relieve your fingers.
Don't underestimate the power of the thumb's, everything is a tool in your climbing arsenal if you use it right :)
training with an open finger grip (no thumb) is a safer more effective way to train. It increases your crimping strength without you actually having to specifically train doing crimps. Crimping too much can lead to injury.
that's not necessarily true. check out dave mcleod's blog, he has a post addressing this subject in a very scientific way. his conclusion is that both should be trained.
this is an oft-repeated bit of climbing knowledge that i believed myself, but it doesn't have any real substantiation.

@theminiman63
I climb since 2000. But on average I would say if you train hard after 1 or 2 years you should be able to do it also.

so im climbing we dont really need to work our thumbs cause we dont really use it?
ObiAntKenobi 2 years ago
You're not really going to be hanging off your thumbs. You do use thumbs in pinches. But you can train your thumbs with general grip training.
