Goodness, the gentry did have their problems. I think I enjoyed "Little Dorrit" and "Bleak House" just a bit more, but "Martin Chuzzlewit" is also a fine example of Dickens work.
Tom Pinch closed with Dickens' " . . . as if I were a character in a book", and I looked up expecting to see Charles Dickens himself, as if I'd been caught believing in the persons and lives of his novel. Now the sad reckoning of his literary glory and my ordinary life.
Ordinary and glorious, not one without the other after "Martin Chuzzlewit". I especially value the comments of you, total strangers. Thank you.
Now, I'm off: " . . . I don't grieve for the impossible." Ah, Dickens.
Thank you for posting. Both the dvds (original and replacement) that I rented from Netflix crapped out at the most crucial point. I had to come to youtube for resolution.
this was an absolute feast. up till now i thought domby and son was the jewel in the bbc's crown, but this was something else. so much talent but elizabeth spriggs as mrs gamp was a masterclass in dickens' characterisation. wonderful stuff. thank you very much for posting this. i am so grateful.
Thank you for posting this. Sincerely, thank you very very much.
