  • Sure wish Spider-Man could do this

  • i'd hate to be a moth!

  • NOPE

  • got back from my run this morning and as i was walking in through the back door as i always do i saw a very messy web next to it and my first thought was ooh a redback! bent down and had a closer look and sure enough there she was :) took a photo and all then let her be. I'll be checking on her every so often though to make sure she doesn't crawl into one of my shoes or something

  • I may be frightened of small spiders but I find them all so amazing in what they can do, and this is where I feel so bad when I squish one because despite how venomous or hideous they may look they do so much more for us than we realize.

  • Indiana Jones Spider :o

  • That's how you fish! Like the sound effect to it also ha ha.

  • holy moly

    =O

  • I can't believe that such tiny insects can be so intelligent and remarquable predators!

  • @domdom111111 Its not inelligence, its instinct to them. In the same way breathing to stop yourself from dieing isnt intelligent

  • @XxNiNjAsHaDoWxX

animals like ants throw random variations at problems and then the answer that is most successful allows the animals that used it to reproduce the most if ants had to explain and prove and think of the maths behind everything it would be impossible that is why people like Richard dawkins are stupid.

  • @topbluffa1 Are you just guessing at this? Because no, what they do is instinct, their brains are literally hard wired, they possess no ability to problem solve, if the solution doesnt already exist in their head, then they dont know what to do. For example, there is a species of ant that cant build its own nest, because they are made to take over other colonies nests; They were born without the ability, and will never learn how to do it

  • @XxNiNjAsHaDoWxX

no im not guessing its a fact, some things may be instinct but others are not for example when they chose a new site for a nest they all make a collective decision which site would be best its not some queen who makes the decision.

  • @topbluffa1 Yes, they have a set of pre-defined conditions in their head on what an ideal location for a new colony is. IE: Instinct

  • @XxNiNjAsHaDoWxX

wrong some chose differently but they go with what the majority thinks.

  • @XxNiNjAsHaDoWxX

    go look up collective intelligence

  • cool!

  • mummified moths

  • I simply don’t understand how anyone can believe this spider with its sophisticated techniques ‘evolved’ all by itself. Absurd. Simply absurd.

    Wonderful video.

  • @Scronix. However saying that it was created by an all-powerful being is not absurd? Nature has its ways, give it enough time and it will come up with an unbelievable level of sophistication. However, science can explain how this spider came to be perfectly well. It's in no way absurd.

I agree with your last sentence though ;).

  • @bobketer Well that’s my mere opinion. :) I do not imply that science can’t deliver answers to various questions, of course it can. Many of the answers are theories, so the commonality of the published answers (or the generally accepted ones) often relies upon yet another of some circumstantial theory –– thus I do not assert it to be any more absurd to believe that it was created.

  • @Scronix Evolution is a fact, it is as simple as that. It can be observed. The theory of evolution (with emphasis on theory) simply tries to explain its cause. Theories can prove to be false or true. Scientists don't understand gravity fully yet. The current theory on gravity might be false, gravity however, is a fact. Scientists don't take leaps of faith. The way they try to explain everything is in no way absurd, it is rational, logical and carefully examined. Unlike the belief in a deity.

  • @bobketer why do you think people with are detached from rationality and logic? Why do you assume that people with a faith do not think carefully about life and nature, and the world about us? Not all believers discount evolution. I think it takes a greater faith to some how conclude that everything around you some how came from nothing - to me that is more irrational than the one who believes in God.

  • @Scronix Creationism is utter nonsense. Just because millions of people believe in it doesnt make it any less nonsensical either. Your arrogant assertion that somehow these spiders needed the intervention of your man made deity or "God" to develop their skills and techniques for hunting is what is really absurd.

  • @Scronix

i don't understand how the shuttle was built, therefore god exists.

  • @Scronix Educate yourself, then.

  • @Alexdurrant7 I most definitely have. I acquired my bachelor's degree in Biology last year, in fact. And now I'm already well into my masters degree.

    What about you?

  • @Scronix Molecular biology degree student.

  • anybody knows the music playing at the end ?

  • Spider with a booty

  • i am wondering why the spiders never get stuck on their own webs.

  • @chantimothy They have small claws on their feet which they use to clamp to the strands of silk, and then they have their own special oils which allow them to walk their own web without getting stuck.

  • @chantimothy Actually some of the replies you got there were very wrong. Spiders can get stuck on their own webs but the adhesive liquid is in tiny balls across the web. The spider can simply avoid them.

  • I didn't know spider can Prom Dance

  • it looks like the spider is fishing

  • seriously.... how long of a silk thread can we put out from a spider...

  • my mum got bit by one of these in australia when she was younger but lucky 4 her it was a male not a female

  • SIMPLY AMAZING!

  • spiders going fishing!!! game over man, game over!

  • i have spiders in canada that do that shit

  • CUTE DANCING at 5:22 :)

  • WOW this really changed how you look at the bug world. Im going to think twice before i kill a spider and everything near it.

  • that seconds spider!! hes a legend

  • this is amazing.

but i can't help but feel sorry for the victims.

  • are they the same as the black widow? just has a different backing instad of a red hourglass?

  • @coldplays179 YES

  • lmfao both those techniques are epic .. gave me a good laugh watching the 2nd spider trying to catch its prey.

  • amazing how spiders behave!!

  • what's the sone on 5:22?

  • wow this is so amazing

  • 4:02 Unbelievable. Like A Human With A Rope

  • Most bad ass spiders ever.

  • that 2nd spider is awesome, wot is strange is that i constantly kill red backs in my backyard and i didnt even know that that is y they build their web that way

  • that is nuts..

  • 3:32 - 3:35 is the most pertyest thing i ever sawed :O

    lol

  • When I saw the spider holding that globule thread like a weapon I thought it was undoubtedly the coolest thing I've ever seen a spider do.

  • @HeyWheresKel it is pretty sick aye?

  • I was sitting there thinking like "No... that spiders not going to swing that thing... is it?"

  • That is one of the true wonders of planet earth. As anything with half a brain knows (like the spider) adaptation to its surroundings is of capital importance IE if your on a boat you use a fishing rod if your in the woods you use a spear, an arrow or a gun. don't be so ignorant to believe we are the most adaptive/supirior of all the animals for that would be foolish!

  • Totally agree. Nature never ceases to amaze me. It is truly unbelievable.

  • @JAMESM7486

We are infact the most adaptive/superior animal on this planet. Name one animal that can go from hot climate to cold, from underwater to space etc. We are also superior in most ways. Don't be naive.

  • fuck me

  • the last spider is pretty damn smart

  • that sppider would make a good cowboy with its web lasso.

  • This American spider with the sticky weapon has a very good aim at the moths.

  • Go Australia!

  • Hi BBC Earth, Just thought I would post a video response on the red back spider of me holding one.

PLEASE Accept this video, I want people to realise these spiders are not "evil" and aggressive...

  • that's class it's like a mace.

  • kinda makes the idea of evolution look a bit silly. it can pick what Theremin it wants to use, how could that come about through accident?

  • Spiders should become stars of action movies.

  • Have you not heard of spiderman...?

  • Really amazing! Sir David Attenborough is GREAT!!! :)

  • amazing

  • I thought the animal running at the start of the video was the spider lol

  • Hilarious to read comments. Like if the world isn't perfect like that means it must be evolution like it's not heaven like so that must mean it's all like an accident, or like quadseptitrizillion accidents, like all in perfect sequence. hahahahaha

  • Creationist comment fails

    LOL

  • wow

  • o.O who says that lol

  • There is no one who is intelligent enough to design all the creatures. If there was, we wouldn't have the family jewels hanging in a sack of skin just because it needs to be kept cool.

  • Your right no one is intelligent enough to design these creatures but there is something capable of of creating life that involves more than just a big bang my friend. Call it what you like

Not sure what nut sacs have to do with here. They serve their purpose right.

  • The nutsack proves that there was nothing intelligent behind creation. If there was, something sensitive like nuts would be better protected.

  • Are you serious! That is the dumbest argument I have ever heard disproving a higher being.

So just because are nuts hang out exposed means there is no intelligent design!?!? That is lame, come again.

  • You think that is a very smart design? No wonder u believe in elves & hobgoblins and can't get through the day without holding the hand of an imaginary higher being.

  • So because you think its not a good design that means its impossible for their to be a designer of life? And what a small thing on a scale of this whole life to complain about....(nut sac)!

You think its coincidence how the sun, moon, stars, gravity, and everything else are pefectly alligned to create life?

Proof is all around you but you rather believe in theories from scientist who have not even scratched the surface of where or how life began.

I dont need anyone to tell me nothing.

  • I don't believe in a biblical creator, who proclaims in a deep, booming voice "let there be gravity", "earth, thou shallt revolve around the sun that thou may host life on thee", "sun, thou shouldst put forth heat & verily light too" & smites people with brimstones.

The unverse is just a shadow. It seems to be real because of consciousness shining behind it. There is neither coincidence nor planning. The sages of India were right.

In biblical terms, all of creation is just god's daydream.

  • Thats fine if you dont believe in the bible but I never mentioned that so slander religion all you want.

You can picture "God" in what ever form you like just like everyone else but if their truly is a creator no one can truly describe its image or intents. And just because you do not agree with something does not make it false.

Hey were did the universe and conscieness come from before you get ahead of yourself with your medaphores?

    Sure Gods daydream.

  • When you dream in your sleep, where do all the people, things & creatures in your dream come from? The universe arises from consciousness in a similar way.

  • Well im no specialist but im sure you can look up alot about dreams online, but again where did consciousness and the universe come from and what makes you so sure that "the universe arises from consciousness"?

  • It was you who wanted to know how dreams arose. You research that.

If someone "created consciousness", was he devoid of consciousness before that? If consciousness does not exist, can anything else exist at all? Think it over, don't just debate.

These cannot be understood by debate or mundane thinking. Sadly the bible (& koran, torah...) are mired in that. To understand these, one must set aside (at least temporarily) one's prejudices, personality etc. & achieve a more focussed state of mind.

  • .......I Wanted to know how dreams arose?? Sorry but I never asked that.

Your asking me a question that no one knows. Thats like asking a car about its maker, the car can only understand what it was programed to know.

Well there is still matter without consiousness but it would not mean anything.

I have sat on the sidelines of many topics and I truly believe what I believe without prejudice. I could ask the same from you but Im not doubting why you believe in your theories.

  • Where are we going with these questions?? You still have not answered mine.

  • You asked how the universe arose. I explained the same way as dreams arise. So, you research dreams if you want the answer to ur question.

Matter may not have consciousness. It doesn't create an universe either. My questions were in response to ur question about who created consciousness. I think u are more inclined towards word play than thinking things over. So, u ask questions & then claim u never asked it.

Once you post a comment as you did 2 weeks ago, u are no longer in the sidelines.

  • Oh man....you are the one comparing the universe to dreams and then when I ask where the universe comes from, you say I asked about dreams. Not the same just because you say it is!

Now are you going to explain where the universe or ("dreams") in you case came from or is your final answer that they just arose??

I think you are the one trying to avoid questions and thats why you divert the questions and aim the gun at me as if I am. We can start over again if you like.

  • I am just curious what next question you will ask me in your knee jerk reaction: Dreams and the universe are the same. Just because you cannot see the similarity doesn't mean they are different. So, if you ask how did the universe arise, you can find your answer by trying to understand how dreams arise.

Now for your knee jerk reaction.

  • I have been asking you the same question for some time now and you have been avoiding it. ("WHERE DID THE UNIVERSE (DREAMS) COME FROM") Explain if possible. You cant just say something with no explaination and expect ppl to buy it.

Oh its a knee jerk reaction when I dont give you the response you want. Well

if it makes you feel in control of the debait by trying to persuade my reation or response by saying things like that, it wont work.

  • When consciousness degrades, the illusion that is the universe arises. Again, these concepts cannot be understood by merely reading Youtube posts or spinning words around. It takes quite a bit of contemplation to really understand these concepts.

  • Alright then where does a person begin to understand your concept of creation?

  • By reading books on eastern philosophy. Youtube posts have to be limited to 500 characters. Books are not.

  • LMAO you owned a creationalist by using balls as your arguement. fair play, brilliant XD

  • amazing

  • cool.:)I love Attenborough's shows....:):)
