First off, I have this same idea for my car, but I want to use a small 7" touchscreen monitor. I was wondering what exactly you did to hook ip the speakers to the computer, did you get a specific sound card? And regarding heat, do you think its fine for a computer to be in a car like that? Last thing, moving parts like the HDD, doesn't last too long in a car does it?
Good questions. I used to Stereo Jack to RCA adapter to connect it to the sound card. I then identified the stereo wires in the car and soldered them to the RCA plugs. Not the cleanest solution but it did work. I did get some engine noise feedback but I was able to minimize it with a ground loop isolator. Heat and moving parts were a concern but I didn't have much of a problem. It would get hot in the summer but everything performed okay. The atom processor didn't get too hot
@MrAllforpc The moving parts of the harddrive did okay too. I did get some skipping when off-road but that might have been the backup mouse getting bounced around. You could get a SSD with no moving parts. The cold seemed to be the biggest problem as it amplified the problems with the touchscreen backlight working. I have since removed this system from the car due to that prob. If I had to do it over again, I would get an off the shelf system or mount a tablet PC or iPad.
@h3xyournightmare Linux sucks, why would you want to do that? I can see it now. Turn on your car and just because of 1 corrupt file you have to pull over, pull out the computer, reboot in rescue mode and run FSCK. Winows got a corrupt file? Oh NOES... it takes 2 seconds longer to boot. How about making Linux even WORK with those specialized hardware and video resolutions? I'd LOVE having to bust out a keyboard and troubleshoot shit in the console when the xServer dies, or etc etc etc
@cinajunior I'm an RHCT, and have to jack around with Linux every single day. Contrary to what people think 1. Linux is not free -- unless you consider time to be free, and 2. Although it doesn't crash any more or less than Windows, it's an infinitely bigger pain in the ass to fix.
@chemao1978 why are you telling that to me? I know exactly what it seems like: when I was 12 the only linux based os a non-RHTC (or whatever you are) could install on his pc was mandrake. I was impressed that time, because my brother's friends (at highschool that time) kept telling me how difficult was redhat to install and how great was the whole kde and self-installer thing...
@chemao1978 by the way, i'm still on my mind: I'd love to see you trying to look cool by having compiz as window manager and pulling out the keyboard to run properly gzip... hahaha...
@cinajunior Sorry but I am having a difficult time understanding what you're saying. Are you trying to say you doubt I know how to use gzip? Clearly English is not your primary language -- and that's cool... but the grammar here is practically incomprehensible. I also speak Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, and Vietnamese. If you're more fluent in any of those, please resubmit your comments in that language.
@cinajunior Also, if you were only 12 years old when Mandrake was out then I doubt you are old enough to even have a clue what you're talking about. I probably knew more about PCs by that time than you have learned collectively, to this day. I was already building servers running FBSD more than 10 years ago. By that time I had also mastered pretty much every console. At 16, myself and 3 others wrote the first EVER encrypted and polymorphic virus in TPASCAL. I already forgot more than you know.
@gasrelay because it looks exactly like it does in 1:10-1:12...there's no dash fascia cover to surround the screen. So you see holes, but you can't see them in the dark. Seems rather lame to me...
@RidingSausage You obviously have not used Linux for very long. You fanboys are hilarious. Those of us that actually KNOW Linux recognize it has an incredible number of flaws.
You see? that's why my syntax is horrible!
(I mean: of course you forgot to write something in the last sentence didn't you?) hahaha!
Just last question: how was the test?
I mean: what kind of questions did you answered?
Was it useful in your career?

@chemao1978 1st: no, just laughing thinking about people using full sized keyboards in cars to do usual tasks...
2nd: clearly that's not so cool, if you didn't understand what i meant...
3rd: no, but I fluently speak Italian, Slovenian, Croatian and (very poor) German.
(really? a red hat certified technician that speaks 5 languages? and you have time to answer to my comments too?)

@cinajunior RHCT was a piece of cake. I took the test without studying :) yes, I speak 5 languages, as also apparently do.

Menuda mierda de montaje. Se deja de colocar la parte trasera de la pantalla. Dedícate al tráfico de armas o a ser chapero y deja al pobre coche.
