What a beautiful song, every time I listen to you sing it, I have tears in my eyes. I was born and grew up in Co. Antrim . Makes me feel homesick but strangely at peace somehow.
I've always wanted to visit the land of my ancestors. No-one in my family's beeen there since 1951, and I want to return my family to our homland roots. The best way for me to stay close to Ireland is by listening to music from Ireland. Thank you.
Maureen, I cannot begin to express how much this song means to me and how much I love your singing of it. I won't describe my background as I suspect that we are on opposite sides of a deep cultural divide. But this song reminds me of all my friends who died in Northern Ireland. It makes me sad beyond enduring because, at the age of 63, I no long have the slightest inkling of why they died. I will carry that sadness, and guilt at my own survival, to my grave. I write this in floods of tears.
@jc32yorkacuk I am very touched by your comments. I have been singing for many years to people and with people on both sides of the divide. That divide is becoming less deep and hopefully will disappear altogether. Don't feel guilty about surviving.............you survived for a reason. I hope to keep singing and as long as my voice keeps going I will sing. Thank you for taking the time to write and be happy. Hope you had a lovely Christmas.Maureen.
I grew up to this song as my Mother was from Antrim. She'd play and sing it at the piano. A sweet memory I have to treasure. I brought her home where she rests as: The Green Glens Of Antrim Are Heaven To Me".
Maureen..I'm looking forward to your version..so..please get it uploaded! :^)
I have the original 45rpm that my Mom brought back. The label is so worn..I can only make out that her first name is Eileen. It is tender and captures the beauty of The Glens.
My Grannie always said this was her favourite song and I learnt to play it on the piano for her. she always asked me to play it and sing it for her. I only knew some of the words so I just made up the rest! Now she is very very ill, and is in a nursing home. She was given 2 weeks to live almost a month ago now and I am going to see her in Antrim next week (I live in London now). I think I might take my laptop and play this to her. She might recognise it.
Hi Maureen, I sent you a text last week saying how lovely your sung was, you mentioned your brother lives in France too - it was funny was talking to my mum about you and it turns out you know each other and shared a room at Lourdes - Teresa Hegarty (McGinty) - it's a small world!!!
Isn't it a small world. I did indeed share a room with your Mum on my first visit to Lourdes...she was a perfect room mate. I have been to Lourdes with the sick on many occasions since. Best Wishes Jannee. Maureen
This is great. Without Youtube I would never have heard your lovely, sensitive voice, dear Maureen. I feel privileged to have found you. Thank you so much.
ive a wee tear for home , thank you , make that a river of , thank you Maureen, for the clenns have been calling me for the past 43 years since I left home , one day ill stand on the knocken and peer into the waters below, for only then will my life be complete
It has been said that Ardai Cuain /Quiet Land of Erin was the "amhrán náisiúnta" in the Glens of Antrim. This one could easily be another. Beautifully sung. Good pictures too. *****
I have another beautiful song to upload "The Blue Hills of Antrim" Gorgeous song. At the moment it is with a friend who is transferring some cassettes to CD for me. Funny to hear my voice as it was about 20 years ago. More 'girlie' if you know what I mean.
I'm sure that it will be great. Would the "The Blue Hills of Antrim" have anything to do with the tune "The Boys of Bluehill" i.e do they refer to the same thing? I look forward to hearing it.
I don't think so. As far as I know 'The boys of Bluehill' is a dance tune. 'The Blue Hills of Antrim' is a classic Irish song. I hope to upload it in the next couple of weeks...still waiting for the CD
I do not have recent videos of myself. I did a lot of work with BBCTV in the past and have some copies I videod. I wouldn't have a clue how to transfer to computer.
There are devices that can now be bought for transferring old video to digital format. A very handy device I'm looking at models as we speak so I can transfer all my old clips of 20 years ago before VHS video becomes a thing of the past...not cheap though around 60 - 70 Stg.
I am think hard about that.....I have a birthday coming up and I must start dropping hints! I have quite a lot of the TV shows I did in the 70s and 80s and it would be a good idea to transfer them to CD . or whatever!! I don't know about posting them to Youtube with copyright . I shall have to make enquiries.
