It very well could have been that strong at the location of the wind recording instrument, but at your location it doesn't look any stronger than 60 mph. A typical garden-variety minimally severe downburst. Downburst winds are extremely variable in velocity over short distances. I have a lot of experience being in wind velocities up to borderline EF3 velocity.and personally observing it live around me. I do not recommend anyone putting their life or anyone else's at risk though. .
@cape6000jkg I've been studying storms for long enough to know from just watching the video that it's well over the 58mph severe threshold. Also, it was recorded by professional meteorologist equipment in my area of a gust of 102mph with sustained winds of 80mph.
That's Texas for you. When it storms here, it FRICKING storms. I remember that storm very well. If memory serves me correct, I think winds were pretty much hitting the 60-80mph range through Tarrant/Denton/Johnson counties and reached 80-100 mph in Collin/Rockwall/Kaufman/Henderson. That was a very nasty Derecho event, but also very sweet.
@zachsaber1 Yes, the strong winds knocked almost everyone's power out in North Texas, although some areas were without power for several days, ours was only out for about 18 hours.
Anyone remember the May 5,1995 thunderstorm with Hail? I dont livein Dallas, but kept hearing about May 5 1995 during the night of the fair. Did you experence it?
I used to live in southeast Texas for 3 years and it's where I experienced some of the worst weather I've ever seen, 1 funnel cloud, plenty of wall clouds, and many bow echoes and tropical storms. West coast is very calm compared to there.
My area in southern wisconsin has had 2 of these this past summer (summer of 2010), and the first one had estimated winds of 75 MPH, and the second i unfortuantly missed because i was at school for band camp to get ready for playing for the labor day parade and football games, we had estimated winds of 115 MPH that one, all we heard was rain, our school was build so great we didnt hear anything but rain and thunder. I get outside, and theres trees and stuff down and little things everywhere
S.O.B thats S.O B THATS i live in bayarea and if you aint S.Y.P I JUST DID FOR YA S.O.B OH HELLNO thats it planet is toast S.O.B scarey WOW WOW didnt see any dogs or cats fly bye heart rates 2 high gtg /wtfg god bless
I remember few severe storms here in england where winds gusted to 120mph at worst & left widespread damage, although its no where near the ferocity of the storms you guys get in the states with hurricanes & tornadoes
I had storm like that where I live, and it lifted a tree from the ground and landed it on top of my garage. Garage was damaged. It look like a nature made see saw.
@TomyTrackmastertrain We actually got rid of it a couple of days after that. It would have been turned off in the beginning if we realized that it was beeping, we were too occupied with something a little more exciting.
Fantastic video. I was in a similar storm in Fargo, ND in July on a Storm chasing trip. This one we didn't even go looking for. It came rigt for the hotel at 4 in the morning and woke me up. I loved it, was so tempted to venture outside, wish I had!
I am an Irishman and this kind of weather we just don't see here.
@medfordORlightning They are fun, the one you went through might have not been a derecho but a bow echo. Typically, not always, derechoes last longer then 5 minutes. Bow echoes are high winds at the front of the line of storms when the line beings to "bow" out. Bow echoes occur more frequently, sustain very high winds, but don't last very long. =)
Scary! O_o In some springs and summers, we also have storms like that. But it take about 5 to 20 minutes only, reaching 100km/h or more than it. It depends if it's too warm and humidit. Temperature can be 35°C in a afternoon; but after the storm it reachs less than 20°C. Feel the Power of the Nature! hehehe
now that i live in texas... i realized how bad the storms are here. its thundering right now with a severe warning :) so i guess I'm used to these types of storms
Not a tornado, it's a downburst, cool air from the cumulonembus falls down like a coloumn of wind, the wind here is formed when this coloumn hits the land and expands alla around like an air explosion. A tornado it's quite different. 30 mins it's pretty rare though, but still this is a downburst.
After growing up in Oklahoma and spending 30 years there (far too long BTW) I know that between the first week of April and the last week of June you can see storms like this one about 2-3 times a week ... I have personally seen 10 Tornados (some too close and some comfortably far away) ... The fact that you never know which storm is going to produce a damaging event is the reason why Storm Cellars are more popular than Swimming Pools
good video but what was that beeping sound in the background? it was like beep beep beep every minuet or so. Btw i live in texas too and i miss those storms.
I'm not trying to make you feel stupid, but a tree branch weighs a few pounds and a window, can be broken with a tossed baseball. A car is about 1/2 ton...
I think what you mean is, you like to watch weather like this from a safe place. You would think differently if you were facing that sort of weather outside.
Just goes to show you how powerful something like an F5 would be, i mean prolonged spell like that derecho and a few tree's and power lines were damaged then you can only imagine what Greensburg was like at the time there F5 struck. awsome footage by the way, only wished i lived there, the nearest i got to anything like that was last year at my business. see my footage, nowhere near as powerful as yours.
As much as I enjoy watching this video, if I'd been there in real life I would've moved AWAY from these windows and watched on the other side of the house, out of the direct path of the wind - just to be safer. 'Cause you never know, in weather like this, what might whack your window while you're on the other side of it.
wow..Im surprise your windows did not brake in peaces, with that rain hitting straight at it, they look fragil.. love the rain, when it cause no damage...
To this severity, not too often. We get several severe classified storms a month during tornado season. And, usually a couple of storms close enough with tornadic activity to set off the tornado sirens. As for the rest of the rest, we might see one or two severe storm a month.
For all you non-Texans out there...we don't have basements down this way and the storms can be terrifying, particularly at night when you can't watch the weather as easily.
@MMWarrior23 Waterproof Safe Rooms and Below Ground Metal storm shelters are avaliable and affordable (more or less) .. I could not move back to Oklahoma unless I had a Hidey Hole to jump into when the sirens blew.
Wow. Thanks for posting and great description. So a derecho is the product of a severe squall line (multi cell line) thunderstorm? I thought they were associated with supercell and multi cell line thunderstorms together. Could it be caused by that as well? Or maybe multiple supercells? I'm still learning about it. Storms just intrigue me.
It hit all around Texas. o: But I think it's mostly in North Texas. I remember watching the news that day, shitting my pants when I looked outside. lmao.
It was the back-up battery supply we had for the computer. It was at the time on the edge of dying and was beeping letting us know that it was almost out of battery life.
Did you see the poor car parked outside? He's all alone in that storm. When will you put him in the garage where it's nice and warm? Poor car! He's all soaking wet!
about 7 years ago we had a storm like this up where i live. It hit our town just as the storm was transitioning from a supercell to a squal line. we had 70 mph winds for close to 30 minutes. the damage was amazing
Well there's not really any such thing as a mini-derecho, some are just stronger than others. This video contains one of the strongest I've seen with winds at about 80mph with gusts over 100mph. There was a storm last night that was a derecho as well, but unlike the one from the video, it contained a lot more rotation and tornadoes touching down.
Wow, that looks like what my mom and I were driving through yesterday...it probably wasn't xD But it looked just like it, because all the lights went out and there were trees snapping everywhere. Heh, it was awesome! :D
It did in a way, it broke the tree trunk from the root ball which eventually a few days later killed the tree because it couldn't get the nutrients it needed. We just had our 4th tree planted a couple of weeks ago because of storm damage.
Evil storm starved your tree to death! It couldn't get the nutrients it needed!
Great footage btw. I have seen every single video of thunderstorm winds on youtube and this is among the best. Are winds this strong a rare event where you live?
Winds this strong, it's not extremely rare but something we don't see every year. But winds between 58-65mph, we will see in storms a couple dozen times a year in our area.
You're so lucky. I have lived in Hawaii and now Miami and thunderstorm winds over 50mph (sans a hurricane) are incredibly rare, but happen maybe once every few years.
OMG he called it a show. Shame on you, foo'! lol jk jk. When you get one, make sure it's a 96, because any other V8 year sucks, ESPECIALLY 99. 99's didn't even have SARC.
Yea from the years 87 thru 95 i believe, they were the 24 Valve DOHC Yamaha engine. then the 1996 thru 1999 has the V8 Yamaha engine. I think its 3,4 not sure. But now theres a new SHO coming out. SHO stands for Super High Output.
LOL my 02 Taurus SE had a good factory sound system. Just the ordinary speakers with an in dash factory CD player. Sounded good, better than the 99 Sable LS i had.
Yea, my factory speakers inside the car sound really good, had the upgraded sound off the line. But then I also have a type X Apline sub (3000 watt sub) in the trunk with an 800 watt Kenwood amp to it.
89-95 had the 3.0 Yamaha V6 with sticks, 93-95 had optional automatics with a 3.2 V6, and lastly 96-99 had the mongrel semi-Yamaha 3.4 V8. Those mongrel bastards are EVIL!!!! I'm not expecting much from the new SHO however. 365 horses are no laughing matter, but they STILL left out the option of having 3 pedals...
Yea i wanna get a 3rd Gen SHO. My friend has a 98 SHO and its badass with the factory exhaust lol. Id rather have them rather than the DOHC V6's from the 95 and belows lol
Honestly, if you know how to drive stick you should get a Gen II. I convinced my mother to get one, and after we (we, as in ME) got it running, we lined up and we did a little impromtu race. My GIII was always slow (even after $12,000 invested, plus intake, exhaust, and a custom tune), and the GII's secondaries weren't opening right, but with me in the only fullblooded Yamaha... There was just no competition. Also, if you wanna know what happens to a V8 that burns oil, watch my videos.
I live in Mobile Alabama and storms like this are not rare.. when you live in a place that gets a hurricane every year its not the actual storm that is scary... it's the no power for a week that is quite frightening
Yea, these storms are pretty common in our area, actually had one roll through early this morning...not nearly at strong as this one though...contained winds about 62mph.
But after this storm in the video, some neighborhoods were without power for up to 2 weeks. We were lucky enough to only be without power for about 14 hours.
It very well could have been that strong at the location of the wind recording instrument, but at your location it doesn't look any stronger than 60 mph. Gosh I have never seen one last this long!
stormchickx78 2 years ago
We had a pretty bad line of storms blow through Kentucky today. There are still thousands of people without power. Great footage!
stormchickx78 2 years ago
Oh, wait...it was like a mini-derecho?
I don't know.
I think the winds reached up to 80mph. or more..
EarthGirl1019 2 years ago
Well there's not really any such thing as a mini-derecho, some are just stronger than others. This video contains one of the strongest I've seen with winds at about 80mph with gusts over 100mph. There was a storm last night that was a derecho as well, but unlike the one from the video, it contained a lot more rotation and tornadoes touching down.
MMWarrior23 2 years ago
Haha. I know. So..thats what my mom and me were in.
But it was scary at the same time it was amazing...
EarthGirl1019 2 years ago
Wow, that looks like what my mom and I were driving through yesterday...it probably wasn't xD But it looked just like it, because all the lights went out and there were trees snapping everywhere. Heh, it was awesome! :D
EarthGirl1019 2 years ago
well i'm relieved to read some comments and know that i'm not the only one who loves this type of weather lol i love thunderstorms

Looks like that tree is going to uproot :o
marissa32 2 years ago
It did in a way, it broke the tree trunk from the root ball which eventually a few days later killed the tree because it couldn't get the nutrients it needed. We just had our 4th tree planted a couple of weeks ago because of storm damage.
MMWarrior23 2 years ago
Evil storm starved your tree to death! It couldn't get the nutrients it needed!
Great footage btw. I have seen every single video of thunderstorm winds on youtube and this is among the best. Are winds this strong a rare event where you live?
CyrusNixes 2 years ago
Winds this strong, it's not extremely rare but something we don't see every year. But winds between 58-65mph, we will see in storms a couple dozen times a year in our area.
MMWarrior23 2 years ago
You're so lucky. I have lived in Hawaii and now Miami and thunderstorm winds over 50mph (sans a hurricane) are incredibly rare, but happen maybe once every few years.
CyrusNixes 2 years ago
I want to live where you live! Id love to see the power of that so close!!

Did they keep the trampoliine?
sportsmangi37 2 years ago
Haha, no they didn't, the neighbors came and got it the next day.
MMWarrior23 2 years ago
OMG he called it a show. Shame on you, foo'! lol jk jk. When you get one, make sure it's a 96, because any other V8 year sucks, ESPECIALLY 99. 99's didn't even have SARC.
Shrike2415 2 years ago
LOL you messed up too lol You said he and not you (which means me) lol.

what is SHO?
raymflame 2 years ago
Performace model of the Ford Taurus that regularly kills Mustangs, Camaros, things of the sort.
Shrike2415 2 years ago
Yea from the years 87 thru 95 i believe, they were the 24 Valve DOHC Yamaha engine. then the 1996 thru 1999 has the V8 Yamaha engine. I think its 3,4 not sure. But now theres a new SHO coming out. SHO stands for Super High Output.
brandonya1990 2 years ago
Yea, my car isn't a SHO but it has "power" except in a sound system form, haha.
MMWarrior23 2 years ago
LOL my 02 Taurus SE had a good factory sound system. Just the ordinary speakers with an in dash factory CD player. Sounded good, better than the 99 Sable LS i had.
brandonya1990 2 years ago
Yea, my factory speakers inside the car sound really good, had the upgraded sound off the line. But then I also have a type X Apline sub (3000 watt sub) in the trunk with an 800 watt Kenwood amp to it.
MMWarrior23 2 years ago
89-95 had the 3.0 Yamaha V6 with sticks, 93-95 had optional automatics with a 3.2 V6, and lastly 96-99 had the mongrel semi-Yamaha 3.4 V8. Those mongrel bastards are EVIL!!!! I'm not expecting much from the new SHO however. 365 horses are no laughing matter, but they STILL left out the option of having 3 pedals...
Shrike2415 2 years ago
Yea i wanna get a 3rd Gen SHO. My friend has a 98 SHO and its badass with the factory exhaust lol. Id rather have them rather than the DOHC V6's from the 95 and belows lol
brandonya1990 2 years ago
Honestly, if you know how to drive stick you should get a Gen II. I convinced my mother to get one, and after we (we, as in ME) got it running, we lined up and we did a little impromtu race. My GIII was always slow (even after $12,000 invested, plus intake, exhaust, and a custom tune), and the GII's secondaries weren't opening right, but with me in the only fullblooded Yamaha... There was just no competition. Also, if you wanna know what happens to a V8 that burns oil, watch my videos.
Shrike2415 2 years ago
wow id be afraid to be near the window
cant believe people are driving in that
devilishangel17926 2 years ago
I live in Mobile Alabama and storms like this are not rare.. when you live in a place that gets a hurricane every year its not the actual storm that is scary... it's the no power for a week that is quite frightening
bubbleinmytub18 2 years ago
Yea, these storms are pretty common in our area, actually had one roll through early this morning...not nearly at strong as this one though...contained winds about 62mph.
But after this storm in the video, some neighborhoods were without power for up to 2 weeks. We were lucky enough to only be without power for about 14 hours.
MMWarrior23 2 years ago
OMG that poor, poor Ford taurus.
