  • You know, I like this video, but I fucking HATE Jim Sterling. For every smart thing he says like in this video, he says four downright retarded, childish, and extremely biased things, then calls whoever disagrees with him idiots.

  • I agree with MOST of what he says, but I feel he is being a little childish, I could play a game, and just insult it, and not Try to play it, and consider it might be good. So basically you should know how to "play a game properly," and willing to actually consider if its good, not just insult it.

  • You have some balls for standing up to bullying devlopers, but good on you, but way to go, you've won cool points of me, and I'm make sure my friends don't buy this shit

  • Restaurant critics who give a dish 1 star out of 5 should be forced to eat another plate.

  • WELL SAID MAN, WELL SAID!

  • I disgusted that you grievously insult individuals with Downs Syndrome by comparing them to game developers.

  • @YAUUN Oops, so outraged I left out the "am" and forgot the ALL CAPS.

  • Your 'chin' is hypnotising.. *_*

  • While I mostly agree with this, I do think it's possible to"play a game wrong". I remember when first playing Doom, I was treating more like a "stealth" type of game and it's really meant to be played with all out aggression. I'm not sure if I can fault myself for that, but it did make the experience my less enjoyable for myself.

  • @Attila226 I agree. I remember a friend of mine traded Fallout 3 in immediately after completing the story and said it was complete shit. He didn't touch on half the gameworld having done nothing but trawled through the appauling story in a couple of sessions and missed the point. While in many cases it is on the developer to indicate how you're supposed to approach a game, they should also be able to rely on conventions that some people, like my friend, will simply not understand.

  • a reviewer is really a glorified player, and if a player isn't understanding how to play then the developer hasn't made the game intuitive enough which is a symptom of poor play-testing

  • Touching on thin ice with the downs syndrome thing bro

  • @thebearrock It was a good metaphor imo

  • @thebearrock I don't think Jim Sterling really gives a fuck about hurting other people's sensibilities.

  • OH GOD JIM, PLEASE TELL ME WHY, why I should care?

  • Actually, the director behind brown bunny has had several angry discussions with Roger Ebert because of his negative review. So it has happened, still silly though

  • I think its interesting that the idea when playtesting is to not hold the players hand

So they can see if their game is either broken or incomprehensible to an average gamer.

But for some reason this designer throws these ideas out the window and suggests that a reviewer can only properly play the game when given explicit directions and a hand up their ass.

I can only imagine what they did when playtesters got confused

  • The title is wrong lol. Just noticed this after watching every single one on youtube, and "Jinquisition" not being in bold print because of the mistake. No big deal though.

  • Hilarious.

  • One of your best.

  • thumbs up to have these developers pay cut for releasing a shit game and whining about the review.

  • =0.0=

  • man this is why i love shows like this. it seems to be a trend on the internet. gamers discussing the gaming situation or news and not trying to be nice. i fucking love it.

i loved hard news and now i'm hooked on the jimquisition (which is spelled wrong for this video in the header).

  • Any developer who includes the phrase "Save the world, kill yourself"in their narrative, has no right to complain when they declare their game to be shit.

  • If a critic can say a game sucks, couldn't a developer say a critic sucks without him posting a long-winded video on youtube? Isn't he, in essence, doing to the game developer the same thing that the developer did to him that made him so livid?

    Odd.

  • @crouchingmonkeys Well in this scenario the particular developer did this to EVERY critic who gave this a not perfect score (which was about everyone) and the behavior done was nearly stalking them to say how bad they were at reviewing their game. Not to say I entirely disagree with you but I say he wasn't entirely unjustified in this response.

  • @80MaxWell08

Understandable. And after watching a few more of his videos, I believe he doesn't respect his own profession enough to be credible. His videos come off as dramatic pleas for attention or popularity rather than actual reviews or commentaries. I'll stick with my guns though. After seeing how he puts developers and games down the way he does, he has no reason to be "livid" when they come back to defend their games in the same fashion that he so fervently tore them apart.

  • @crouchingmonkeys He's only complaining that the developers don't understand that they must communicate through the game itself how the game should be played.

  • @lPheenixl

Much like his other videos are full of negative complaints because of his poor lack of critical thinking. I played through Hydrophobia and found it easy and entertaining. My review of his reviews?

Jim is as lazy as he looks (personal insults are ok according to him - very professional, I know). Not only were Hydrophobia, Crysis, Star Wars: The Force Unleased easy, but the game mechanics worked great and allowed me to feel larger than life. Learn to use your head.

  • @crouchingmonkeys Was that last comment directed at me? Where exactly did I say something you counterpointed?

Also, out of curiosity, not anger, how are easy games better?

  • @lPheenixl

No, it was directed at the critic. And easier doesn't make better - but he has complained of the difficulty to understand and play those games, where I found that with the smallest amount of thought being put into them, they were all on the easy side.

Also, harder doesn't necessarily make better either, but I like a little bit of a challenge.

  • I totally agree. A developer's job when designing a videogame is to facilitate the gameplay to make it intuitive and insert PROPER tutorials (The kind that you don't realise you're doing). The gamer's interaction with the gameplay mechanics and in-game elements is purely the developer's responsibility. If a gamer gets sidetracked in a mission or stuck in an area not knowing what to do, IT'S THE DEVELOPER'S OWN FAULT. And I speak as a gaming enthusiast and hopefully future developer.

  • @OpiSenpai

I suppose an example of the tutorial you don't realize you're doing would be like how Portal teaches you on the fly?

  • @UnusedPineapple Exactly!! But not just that. I mean for example, In Call of Duty 4, where the tutorial is camouflaged as a training course in the base. Yes, you know you're doing the tutorial, but it's not tediously boring. Or in Super Meat Boy the firs piss easy couple of levels where all you learn is how to jump and run. Finally, the first Mario, where you just jumped right into the first level, yet it was so simple you lewarnt the basics, and then progressively you learn more complex stuff.

  • @OpiSenpai

Yeah, I see what you mean, especially in the CoD 4 example.

  • I love your thoughts! I'm having a great afternoon drinking my "morning coffee" watching your videos, nodding and laughing. :-D

  • I kinda agree to this. But an idiot playing a Stealth game as an FPS or an RPG as an MMO and then complaining about the difficulty and grinding respectively is still an idiot.

  • Jim, if you can do that again, in Lewis Black's voice, you would be a GOD.

  • well i think we all know not to call Jim now.

  • Me: *Eats lychee* "I don't like the taste of this."

Farmer: "YOU'RE NOT EATING IT RIGHT!"

  • Not religious, but I believe "Amen" fits well here.

  • haha, deadly premonition soundtrack in the background. Brilliant

  • freak...

  • Really? That is disgusting. Shame on them for having such a rude and insulting attitude towards a few negative reviews.

  • 'The Fight' is another example of a game 'not being played properly' by reviewers...

  • i agree with his point but abbie heppe from G4TV should be fired and banned rom the video game industry for her metroid other m review.

  • I'm on the fence with Jim. He makes a lot of good points, but I really hate the whole ego-mania attitude. I don't get the need to be the "Howard Stern" of video game journalists.

  • Wow, this is deep shit, not buying hydrophobia now!

Thanks Jim, for me you stand for free speech within gaming journalism and i fucking love it. Keep doing your thing.

  • What's a Jimquition?

  • @Andyman067 it's like an inquisition but his name is Jim.

  • @Chrono1020 I was just making a joke about the typo.

  • @Andyman067 oh lol I thought you actually didn't know.

  • This guy is my hero.

  • Haha the down syndrome joke was funny but tight. Lolol

  • Thank god for Jim!

The average gamer nearly don't even care about video game review any more, simply because of this shit happening from publishers and developers.

  • @Jim: QFT good sir. QFT.

  • Here here! *Applause!* XD

  • the down syndrome comment was too far... that's the first time imo that i have thought that about this, suprisingly.

  • Godamn brilliant.

  • I really really really appreciate this video and this argument.

  • "JIMQUITION"

  • I have no idea how anyone can not like this video. Jim, 100% of what you said is supported by ScrewAttack. Well done sir.

  • Jim sterling for president!

  • who the hell is whistling?!

  • @ShezEldaRific The music from deadly premonition.

  • Its just a game anyway , Who cares!

  • AMEN, BROTHER

  • Holy shit the down syndrome comment wasn't required

  • Picking on people with down's syndrome is kind of a low blow...

  • Excellent.

  • ...Damn

  • Spot on, sad that people don't understand that a review is a mere show of someones opinion, and perhaps an overview of the game, but THAT IS ALL. Sad that you had to deal with that too.

  • wow man. its your fucking oppinion about the game. personaly, i thought the game was nice. not perfect. just nice.

  • Please review it again and give it a lower score!

  • LOL! I can't believe they called you and told you to re-review it! You should of re-did it and gave it a lower score.

  • Lol, down syndrome kids

  • If the developer gave me money, I would consider a re-review. To the greatest extent.

  • I can kinda see the developers point of view. Alot of power is wielded by the reviewes these days and if they have greasy hair and can't hold a controller with their chubby hands then why can't the dev. call them up and give suggestions. Maybe they will enjoy the game better. Isn't that all that matters?

  • @steelhorseclub The fact remains that the everyday player wont have that luxury, so if the reviewer has this extra advice, it creates a different experience for the review then the average gamer. Henceforth, whats the point of the review then?

  • When people claimed Mass Effect had poor combat and Bioware saw it was due to them not employing the game mechanics, they came away with the impression they had fucked up and didn't explain how to play the game.

  • Nice haircut.

  • I love the background music.. don't you agree, Zach?

  • WTH did he do to Sonic...

  • You say fuck a lot.

  • @tehblckdeth It is a rant.

  • @tehblckdeth Yep, seemingly just so he can say it, too.

  • Wow that's pretty pathetic.

  • Your choice for background music is one of the few True Perfections in this world.

  • @lPheenixl Why did you capitalize "True Perfections"?

  • @tehblckdeth For comedic value. It is a bad habit of mane pseudo-intellectual authors to capitalize made-up concepts.

  • I keep forgetting not to eat before watching the intro

  • I do not find this guy interesting, or entertaining in any way. He seems to think swearing a lot will get his point across. I call it... being lazy.

  • @WildfireKitsune Then don't watch him? And don't bother to post your hating opinion so people who enjoy him don't have to deal with you?

  • @Keykode4 Actually I enjoy reading comments with opinions opposed to mine to get a feel for what people see of flaws and to not end up in a bubble of hype.

  • @Keykode4 I am not watching him, I am watching DTOID and his stuff just happened to come up. But, if you'd like to tell someone else to not post their opinions on the internet, please be my guest. Let's see where that gets you.

  • @WildfireKitsune You act like I was really trying to stop people from posting their comments

    internet sarcasssmmm :D

And so what if his video pops up and you don't like him, click the little X and don't bother. Ooh, I'm such a hypocrite, saying don't bother but I don't give two shits if you comment or not.

  • @Keykode4 So I watch his video /once/ and decide to comment on it, and you complain? Start trolling somewhere else.

  • @WildfireKitsune And I was "supposed" to know this is the first..lol, hate comment you've posted?

    Nice try.

  • @Keykode4 I'm not sure why you're still complaining over nothing.

  • @WildfireKitsune ..Because I can? lmao

Sure, I can stop being a butthurt bitch about it, even though I'm not, but I'm just having some fun.

  • @Keykode4 Why can't he post a negative comment? Are YouTube videos free from opinion all the sudden?

  • Hallelujah!

  • why doesnt dtoid do video reviews?

  • Terrible camera that spaz's out all the time, stiff controls, really bad character models and animation. I waited until I completed the game before commenting on the game to see what the challenge mode was like and if they included the physic ability in the main game it may have been worth the purchase but as it stands not worth the 1200 points. Oh and the ending is BS!

  • It's amazing how well Jim can throw a microphone.

  • Hydrophobia was pretty dan crap though, maybe I just played it wrong too.

  • I wish i had a parrot that could do what Jim described. Anyone else? Or am I alone on that? lol

  • spot on Jim

  • fuck deborah jones

    what a cunt

  • Comment removed

  • your going to break that mic again jim.

  • jeeez it be nice if they would just post jimquisition alot more frequantly instead of posting alot after not posting them for weeks

  • @gam4freak1 They actually are posted a lot more frequently on Destructoid but I've been behind on reposting them to Youtube. Entirely my fault (Written by Jim)

  • @DTOID Yeah. Jim. Woo!

  • oh my
