I was in awe, loved this band when I was 13. Still have the vinyl. Loved her incredible voice then and now. Early on became a drummer and still play with my band . Love to share . Thank you so much for loading.
i have been in love with this band since their first album, man it is just too good but at the same time so sad that the two main members died, i can hardly listen to it withou crying, but i do anyway. One of the best bands ever!
This is amazing! Thankfully, a friend recently turned me onto this band, and I'm still in awe. I've definitely been missing out. Candie's vocals were truly soulful. Though comparable to Janis Joplin, she had her own unique voice. And who doesn't dig the style of Tommy Bolin? The world lost two extreme talents when they passed on. Thanks for sharing!
I loved Zephyr...I saw them open for Steppenwolf in 70' or 71'and I'll never forget Candy Givens...I've told people that last 40 years about this band that blew my socks off...and that this chick could hold her own with any other nota white blues singers out there and bring something else to the table...Great to hear this from this great band fronted by a hard drivin woman...thanks, Lonz
Thank you everyone for your kind comments about Candy. I"m her sister. If she would have lived she would have been 64. And still rocken out I;m sure. I remember when they use to practice at the house. We all loved it and of course I was always in love with Tommy. I;m two years younger than and she was always my older best sister.
@H0TS0CK She was one of the best. She didn't get the attention she deserved. But those of us who know a thing or two about music look at Zephyr and see two great music talents: Tommy and your sister. She's singing with the angels now, I'm sure. And the angels are jealous. Slainte.
@H0TS0CK Like I left on your page your sister was one of greatest female vocalist in the world! She will be forever missed. RIP Candy...you might have been really small in size but girl..you had one big VOICE.
I was at CSU in 69...we had what we called Freak Balls to coincide with the Greek balls...the administration begrudgingly gave us the old cattle building; with dirt floors for our little event...someone from Denver said there was this new band he could get; named Zephyr and that they were really good...nobody had ever heard of them...well, they came into our 'cowpalace' set up right in the middle of the floor and proceeded to blow everyone away...neither album does justice to Ms Givens
@mts9 you are a complete idiot. I saw her live in Victoria and Janis Joplin in San Antonio Texas and Candy was only a step behind Janis the legend. Of course this band kicked the Holy Shit out of Janis' Band.
OK I want everyone to vote down the schmuck that says Candy Givens has the worst voice ever. What a WAD. I saw Zephyr live and Candy is a Rock and Roll Legend with people that actually have ears. Do it vote this A hole down and out. Find it and vote this comment out of the listings. If they do it again come back to this song and get this weasel off of you tube.
I saw Zephyr in the park in Boulder Aug '69 A bunch of hippies hangin'. Then this VOICE starts from the bandshell. I look and that voice is coming from this smaill chick. Oh MY Fuckin God... Then Tommy starts using an echoplex First time I saw someone using one Later I found out he was my age.. Seventeen!!!!! Never forget
Candy Givens was a great singer but you can't do ludes in a hot tub and expect to see the next day. She took the subway ride to the other side but if she had lasted a bit longer she would have given Janice Joplin a run for the money.
I LOVE SO MUCH THIS SONG SUPER FEELING , QUE GRANDE CANDY GIVENS FUISTE Y SERAS UNA DE LAS MEJORES DE LA EPOCA DE ORO. TRIBUTO A TI CON TUS MEJORES TEMAS.
It was 1970 I was 16 years old. Livin on the beach in Southern California. We were hangin at a friends place havin some beers and gettin high when my buddy Steve said "Hey! everyone check this song out" He put it on the turn table and cranked it up way loud. Those first two power cords scared the shit out of everybody needless to say it got our attention. We all shut up and dug it!
I was lucky enough to see Zephyr in Albuquerque NM just when they put out their first album. The promoter scammed everyone with the promise of Blue Cheer who of course never showed up. We got off on Zehyr so much we didnt care. All of us went out and bought the Zephyr album the next day. I have bought anyghing with Candy Givens on vocals. She was a tiny woman with a HUGE INCREDIBLE VOICE. I have told friends it is a jazz, blues, rock blend that does work. Thank you Zephyr I miss Candy.
As previously noted, when I saw him LIVE, circa 1974ish, he had a tele. And this clip ("Hard Chargin' Woman") is clearly a tele (on the bridge pickup setting)--nothing LP about it. Think about Jimmy Page's LP sound versus what you hear here.
He quit Zephyr in 1971. He used a rented Telecaster and a rented SG on a couple of the songs on the ZEPHYR LP - can't remember which tunes, which guitar. As for what he used on stage, I know, I was there, I was the band leader and the bassplayer.
Wow! That makes sense, cause I was still in High School in the early 70s, and my band covered "HCW." But I still take issue with your Central Park gig; it was a tele (borrowed or not)! What are you and Candy doing these days. Man we loved Zephyr! Opened the jazz thing for us, especially the B3!
I thought he had switched to a Strat by the time we played with Fleetwood Mac at Central Park, but that's a long time ago and he did occasionally try out a different guitar.
Glad you liked our music - we loved mixing jazz with our rock and blues roots. It was the B3 guy who got us started on it. He was one of a kind.
Candy died in 1984. She still visits from time to time.
You're playing on this track? Well It's amazing, I'm 23, and hearing this for the first time I can tell everything about it is awesome. Tommy, is disgusting, the bass is awesome, and that girl could wail. Down right sexy.
This song formed at least 50% of my rocker consciousness--I imagine it did for many others. Bolin was just stunning when I got to see 'em live in Central Park in the 70s. With his knee-high snakeskin boots, TB on a tele could destroy most everyone--Jeff Beck, Blackmore, everyone, and could run with Page and, dare I say, Jimi. FUCK!
needless to say, i do confirm your thoughts. tommy was great at improvising... a great talent. too bad he could not live with reality. i do not recall him using a tele..... maybe a strat?
I first heard of Zephyr in the early 70's.Loved them then, and loved them now.Clean sounding music. And Candy Givens singing, is so powerful and clear.Wish they came out with more stuff back then.Good that YouTube is here to play some Great Zephyr Music. Thanks,Glenn f.
Pretty cool, my first exposure to Zephyr. I for some reason thought of Tommy Bolin, it was like opening this big door back in time. It's what I love about YouTube, you're constantly finding great stuff you never even knew exsisted.
Zephyr was one of the most under rated bands of that era. Yes Tommy Bolin was great, but the rest of the band more than held their own. The musicians were steeped in a jazz/blues background and it shows. And, Candy Givens was a poor man's Janis Joplin. One of the best bands, musicianship wise of that era. Just great talent!
Hey! Kindly lay off the giggling! While modern so-called singers, once digitized, can have pitch totally tweaked, not only was Zephyr firmly in the analog era but *early* especially for rock. In 69 very few bands had sympathetic and/or knowledgeable recording engineers and even fewer even had monitors. I saw and heard Candy live many times and the girl had both power and pitch but was devoted to "the real thing".. note: hardly even any reverb on her voice, the most basic of sound processing.
While Candy Givens vocals may not quite be up to the toughness and power of the song, I've always enjoyed hearing this one. Yeah, I might giggle to myself a bit on her attempts, but still I'd rather hear her and Tommy than some of the crap called "music" today! Thanks!
