The shack with the plentiful supplies and friendly painted hopper mines suggests that the battle zone used to be his base. He made his last stand at the base of the elevator. He escaped the hordes of enemies by getting into the elevator and barricading himself behind the blast door. With no rescue coming and and trapped behind the door, he put the shotgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger.
