  • nice cover

  • It doesn't matter how many years go by. How many of lifes crisis' I have or how many other versions of this song I see, I ALWAYS come back to this one, Just lovely, I wish I could do what you do!

  • @mrchappelow3 Hey there, thanks a lot, a comment to be proud of, though it seems you've been going through some hard times :-(

    Cheers, my friend!

  • great cover!

  • bravo mec ! super son d'hamonica. i like it.

  • Cool le mec...........bonne version.

  • This is lovely, best cover on here apart from the pogues ones obviously! This song has absolutely nothing to do with ireland however, Ewan Macoll was a British songwriter born in Salford to Scottish parents. This song is about Salford/Manchester.

  • in what key is the harmonica? and can you tell me how to play it on harmonica? please i will do a kill for it! the chords for the guitar are from internet?

  • @4evergreendayfan dude just enjoy and listen

  • its girl mate

  • My friend John I just lost loved to play this song. Im going to miss him!

  • If i ever make a western then you're the guy for the soundtrack album.great stuff

  • Love your basic playing and your rough voice - it really catches the mood of this beautiful song!

  • dude sounds like dave matthews

  • Could you please tell me the chords you use?

I do know some but the are not in the same key as the real thing. But yours is so could you plz tell me.

  • Excellent

  • salford is a city inside another city (manchester)

  • Next door to-not inside.I think the River Irwell is the boundary between the two.

  • salford is a city in it' own right

  • this song was written about salford when ewen lived on whit lane salford, i know the area after living there through out my early years, great song, sung well

  • Loved it. Keep 'em coming!

  • Very nicely done, it's a delight to listen to

  • Bluedustmite - salford is in manchester

  • salford is totally separate from manchester

  • What a great version...

  • I forgot just how much I loved this.

  • awesome stuff! =D

  • excellent my friend ;)

  • You have a lovely voice. This is a great song, and a vurr nice cover.

  • Greetings to everyone in the DOT harmonica players community ! :-) (and thanks about the G tone ! We all need this on the hard road to early Dylan-John Wesley Harding :-)

Bentonio07, When you say that it took you ages to figure out the simplest solos : how many "ages" ? (minutes per day / year. And how simple, as well ? :-) I'm doing a nice job on Jingle Bells, but that's not exactly what I had in mind :-)

Would you share some of your tricks with absolute beginners ?

    Thanx for the video !

  • Well, thanks a lot. It took me a couple of years to be able to play the things I play here on my channel. The most difficult solos for me are the ones in The River and From Hank to Hendrix. Some of the blues stuff is hard, too. I'm self taught. What I did is I bought a book about harmonica playing, did the first couple of lessons and then simple tried playing along. I would say this is one of the simpler ones

  • this is a good cover of this song, well done. you give it something different. by the way what irish pub?

  • Thanks a lot. It was an Irish pub in my German hometown ;-)

  • hey are you german mate? if so, what inspired you to do an Irish song about Manchester?? very nicely done by the way.

  • Hey Johnnie, yes I am, well sort of..

I'm German Italian and I'M not sure what inspired me. It's jsut that I heard the songs so often when I used to spend my evenings in an Irish pub here in Germany.

  • Irish Song? It's an English song.

  • And it's about Salford, not Manchester.

  • @johnnie160 salford

  • Inspiring !!

Thought of doing a cover myself but I will sound funy since Enlgish is not my native language.

  • Don't worry about that, just post it! :-)

  • Fair play to you, this is a great version! Keep it up lad.

  • sounds great! what key is that harmonica is in? G?

  • Thanks, yes it's G!

  • A fine performance, voice, harmonica and guitar! Guinness works wonders! I'm watching your video regularly to learn the harmonica but its difficult.... I think I need a Guinness.

  • LOL - yeah a pint or two might help.

I guess the only solution is practice, practice and practice. I'm self taught and let me tell you at the beginning it took me ages to even figure out the simplest solos

  • i love your voice, this is one of the best covers i ever heard, very good playing of the guitar and de harmonica, i got pimples over my skin

  • Oh, thanks a lot, I appreciate this.

    Bedankt!

  • it's very nice!!!I love it!!!

  • Thank very much :-)

  • good dual guitar and harmonica playing. But isnt it irish not country?

  • LOL, yes, it's (supposed to be) Irish :-)

  • Thanks a lot, appreciate it a lot!

  • i love that song! youre version was great!

  • Wow, thanks a lot :-)

  • HARMONICA was good but the singing was good but not as good as the Luke Kelly version!

  • Don't know that version, gotta find it on YT :-)

    Thanks a lot true Dubliner!

  • great version!top man

  • THANK YOU!

  • Nice. Very nice.

  • Thanks a lot for listening and the favorable comment!

  • You got a unice voice :)

  • Thanks a lot, appreciate it :-)

  • I like the version of christy moore and shane mcgowan very much (especially the duet on the guitar and the chords they use, but your version is absolutely wonderful too. Isn't it hard to play the guitar and the harmonica and sing along at the same time?? It's hard for me to sing along when i play on my guitar. I lose my concentration. So i really admire you as a musisian. Keep up the good work and God bless!

  • Well, I don't know there version but love them both so it's surely great.

Thanks for the really kind comment, gerry.

As for playing harmonica and guitar at the same time guess it's just a matter of practise. Start with simple strumming patterns and practise the harmonica part BEFORE trying to accompany yourself on guitar.

    God Bless and thanks again!!

  • How does the strumming atchually go? And the chords I use is G to C to D to E. If you want I can email you a few other versions of Dirty old town on the harmonica which are lower?

  • I use different chords

G to C, back to G to Am to Em

My strumming is pretty sloppy but it should be

    1 2 + 3 + 4 +

  • Really good, I play the harmonica and just started to learn the guitar, I was looking for your strumming pattern. Very good! 10/10

  • Wow, thanks a lot!!! Keep playing, this song is fun to play and not that difficult

  • First class my friend. Great cover.

  • Wow, thanks a lot!!!

  • I,m using your version to learn this song. hope ya dont mind. cheers. ps have you posted any other vids?

  • Well, I'm flattered, please send me the link wif you consider uploading your version!

    Yes, just check my channel

  • This is really really nice.

  • Thanks a lot adc700!!!

  • Pretty cool! For a better version drink the Guinness before you start singing ;-)

  • LOL - yep would at least be much more fun ;-)

  • Good but Luke Kelly is the main man.

  • Agreed

  • No problem my friend I meant every word you should come to Salford an sing this song you would bring the house down!

  • Who knows, maybe one day I'll be able to do it ...

  • wow!!!! out of all the versions of this fine song this is the best i am from Salford and am very proud of that fact and this song well done brilliant thank you

  • Wow, great compliment!!! thanks a lot!

  • Great song, awesome cover, fantastic drink. 5* bud

  • Thanks a lot and Cheers ;-)

  • Ah my home town song! You have a great taste in music btw, springsteen, JC, U2 and now the pogues. Great stuff, loving it.

  • Hey Ryan, thanks a lot for your kind comment on this one and my choices ;-)

  • Gut gemacht !

Vielen Dank!

  • Ich liebe Guinness und die Pogues. Dirty Old Town ist eines ihrer schönsten Lieder. :o)Dein Cover ist dem Original sehr ähnlich. Melle

  • Hi Melle, vielen Dank, ag das auch sehr gerne, erinnert mich an meine Studizeit: memories... ;-)

  • Love this song, great rendition man.

  • Hey PJ, thanks a lot! I see you're musician, too. Gotta check you out ;-)

  • Hey ben - this is crazy, I have left comments on this one three times and they still havn't shown. anyway, whether its cause i know this song already (and like it) or not, it is undoubtedly my absolute favourite tune on you tube right now. performed to perfection a great scottish folk song (well ewan was scottish). really ben, this is fantastic and the first time ive really wanted to download a tune and put it in the car. hats off.

  • Hey J, wow: what a compliment!!! I hope I didn't click remove again accidentally, like I sometimes do when I want to reply and don't realize that the reply button is gone 'cause I've commented too often. Anyway thanks a lot, this is really a great great compliment. Your voice would be perfect on this one, too!!! I still got my original wav file, if you want it I can send you an mp3 ;-)

  • Guiness is good for you! Guiness gives you strength! My trip to Ireland was one of the best trips I have ever taken. I don't know this song but you sound great!

  • Thanks a lot, and you're right about the Guinness ;-)

There are some clips of the Pogues here on YT in case you wanna check

  • Nice song :) Prost *anstoss*

    Kris

Gruss :)

  • Guinness is vile, but this is very good!

  • Hi David and thanks, well, which beer do YOU like. Guinness is not my favorite, but every now and them I'm in the mood ... Of course living in Bavaria I prefer our excellent local beer ;-)

I watched to original video today, boy, The Pogues were awesome

  • AWESOME!!! This is my favorite Pogues tune. At one time or another I think have owned all of their albums! I'm going to see if i can learn this one with my harmonica! Have a pint of the black stuff for me too!

  • Yeah, what a great band they were. I remember spending literally hundreds of nights in a local Irish bar in the town I was studying at university. There was actually a little Irish comunity who either taught or studied at university. I had a great time with those guys talking, singing, laughing, and well trinking one or two pints... The song always reminds me of those days ...

  • Thats cool. I used to hang out at a litts Irish pub a lot in my school days as well. Good times!
