The QMS I knew and loved was before Dino showed up. When he took over & John Nicky & David quit to get away is when they were a shell of the former band to me but I think Duncan & David are always good & this band with real players making real music sounds real good to me With no Dino ego & act getting in the way I like it! & Gary's guitar gives me old QMS flashes everytime.
I grew up in S.F. during that great time and I also remember QMS pre- Dino. There was much controversy regarding his joining the band. I preferred them w/o Dino too. But Dino's song was one of my favorite cuts! I also remember Big Brother before Janis Joplin and as much as I liked her, I missed Marty Balin's voice. Can't help but miss the young energy of the QMS with or w/o Dino. I realize we can't stay young forever!!!
Excuse me, regarding my comments on Big Brother, I do remember them before Janis, but I was thinking of the Jefferson Airplane before Grace Slick! Whew, time really marches on!!!
The former Grace Wing from Palo Alto w/ The Slick Bro's & Great Society when Skip Spence was JA's drummer & another band from Palo Alto changed their name from Warlocks to Grateful Dead.
I was always a BIG Laura Nyro fan!! I saw her at Berkley. Boy, I haven't thought about the Circle Star in ages. That really takes me back! I have followed Laura Nyro from the very start, knew all of her lyrics etc. But I admit, after a while I moved, and lost track of her. When I heard of her death, I started listening to all the music I had never heard. It was wonderful.
Yes you did I can tell. Think Dino joining QMS was the Major SF Rock controversy. As you know Janis wanted that Solo Star so her leaving BigBro wasn't a major shock but Dino driving out John & David let alone Nicky was Major. Dino's Song was one good thing he did for the band.
Always a fave of mine.
Yes Marty's voice that lauched so many trips.
I miss my young energy too but I've learned to live & play with it.

I can ever remember seeing Laura Nyro sing Society's Child at The Circle Star when it was a new song but you might not be into her.
