  • the libretto is as extraordinary in this as the music---so sensual and very Wagnerian, the extremist....

  • power house voice--like Nilsson--but much sweeter---the best of both worlds.

  • wonderful singing--but the set sucked. it looked like a modernist suberban resort instead of a mythic sea shore. very disapointing and no energy. also the stage direction of Voigt did nothing for me---she just stands there. the production team should have been sent packing. Luckily if you close your eyes its immortal.

  • I for one liked her better vocally when she was fat! Not that the pounds she drop really helped her voice but I think she sang better when she was just getting her name out there.

  • This is shrill.

  • I was there the night Tristan's head slammed into the prompter box. Nothing but bad luck for this run of Tristan und Isolde, but she sung like a champ after getting over her illness. This performance is better than the Liebestod I heard her sing live while there - definitely in better health then!

  • Debbie's awesome and everyone should follow her on Twitter. And while you're at it, head over to Facebook, look up "Deborah Voigt should Host SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE" and give it a LIKE.

  • I'm new to Deborah Voigt, having recently discovered her (yes, I've been in a cave). She's is technically brilliant, but lacks the passion of someone like Maria Callas. No doubt, Voight is remarkable.

  • @SchweigerTil I was just going to say--Voigt is the supreme technician==but something is lacking.....heart, soul, guts==if only we could have put Voigt and Behrens together we'd have the perfect Isolde. Only Netrebko seems to have both vital singer quality these days....and Domingo too, at least tin the past.

  • We saw her three times in the role of Isolde, with each performance better than the others. She is absolutely brilliant in this role - surpassing perhaps all others who've ever sung the role. Da kriegt man eine Gänsehaut!

  • I think what's really important to remember when trying to judge the singers, is that the size of the voice isn't really evident from a microphone, Singers are cast because of the sizes of their voices in the halls, and I have never seen her live therefore I can't really tell if her voice is big enough. And another thing to consider with Wagnerian singers is that it requires a very "pure, piercing" quality. Her voice is undoubtedly ENORMOUS, thats why she sings wagner!

  • i was totally at the Met concert where she got sick like 10 minutes into Act II...was totally a crazy experience to see her run off stage to throw up, Tristan is singing as the curtain is going down and they have to turn off all the lights to get the orchestra to stop playing!! The show must go on!!

  • What recording was this? Is it available on DVD to purchase?

  • I have only 1 criticism....great as it was, the final high note was shaky at best. I can grant her that 1 fault in an otherwise flawless performance. Brava!

  • @nyc11104 Love your comment! Who could dislike this!

  • warum hat diese frau abgenommen ?,,,,,,,,,,,she was such a good singer....

  • Love the sets and lighting also!

  • Beautiful, but the last note WAS flat!

  • She sings it beautifuly, much better than Margaret Price or Helga Dernesch, but still she cannot be compared to Flagstad or Nilsson

  • Deborah Voigt, best Brunhillde I've ever seen. Jessye Norman, best Isolde I've ever seen.

  • *wonderful here.

  • wow she has really come a long way since the weight loss. she sounds wonderful hear. the sound has definitely shrunk in size since the weight loss but it is no less brilliant. in recent years, she can sound a bit below the pitch sometimes but she's sung some pretty good performances.

  • Magnificent, notwithstanding the offensive and ignorant comments here. This was four years ago and Voight still had a long way to go in to get into that little black dress.

  • Magnificent voice, notwithstanding these offense and ignorant comments. And she looks like the sex-fiend Isolde should be.

  • I am happy that Voigt had gastric bypass for her greater health concerns, but if singing like this is the result, it would seem to have been wiser to gradually lose weight and train all the while. What a shame.

I have seen Voigt sing recently, unfortunately these remnants are all that remain; this is not an isolated event.

  • ** What 's a beautiful voice and personality... beautiful really beautiful... **

  • Not at her best but still beautiful rendition of this amazing aria.

  • Nowadays, the golden voice of soprano, my favorite. definitely;

  • Wunderbar!

  • I was very excited, as a fan of Ms. Voigt to see this posting and to listen to it. I'm very sorry, but she was obviously ill. I really can't listen to it again. The audience was quite kind.

  • @phil2u She was not ill, her voice has lost body and intensity. I saw her on la fanciulla del west and I suffered a lot because of the vibratto afecting all her voice, making it tremble.

  • @RoOodOoOloOmeg que lastima

  • @phil2u jeje supongo. Su voz tiene un color hermoso, pero perdio mucho apoyo

  • I just don´t know why everybody is lying to themselves. She doesn´t sound like before, is flat MANY TIMES, the last note was simply bad. Sorry but this isn´t even closed to the way she could sing before and I wasn´t a fan of hers, but of course recognize she could sing very good. Not anymore... sorry.

  • :-)

  • Watching this still reminds me what a transformative moment it was when I heard it live (over the web) in 2008. Ms. Voigt had been ill earlier in the week and it was touch & go if you would sing in this last seasonal performance of this opera at The Met. There was a lot of drama that week and we were all so very happy to witness this performance. Thanks, Deborah!

  • I love Deborah Voigts voice. :) What more is there to say? :)

  • Oh dear. Something must have been really wrong here. You can tell the fear in her eyes. She does not even get close to the place the 'Liebestod' is supposed to take both singer and audience. And that last note was a semi-tone flat! Again I am sure something was seriously wrong...somebody here had mentioned that both principal singers were very sick during this production...

  • The voice is pure silk, big and bold, but always remains silk. She is the definitive Isolde of our day. Brava!

  • A total performer. Brava.

  • ABsolutely lovely.. and in the tradition of lyrical singing.. VEry very pretty.

  • Beautiful!!!! Absolutely beautiful!!!! She is not only a great singer, but a very kind and classy lady. She is a throback to the great singers of the past. We are so fortunate to hear her in the theatre.

  • Move over Debbie. Nina has you downloaded all the way.

  • Moving- i like Mrs.Voigt as Isolde really much, she sounds youthfully and luxurious with all necessary weight for this part.

Thanks for posting this !! :o))

  • I run out of superlatives to describe this.Sublime and magnificent do not even do this justice. This delves right into the heart of Schopenhauer's metaphysics. The very ground of being.Nietzsche loved this so much. The only thing in music that ever approached this was the opening bars of Parsifal.

  • Only english, please...translate or I'll have you removed.

  • Jessye Norman with Karajan conducting is the best....This was terrible

  • Love her!

  • Thank you so much. I have been asking for Voigt's Liebestod on YouTube and you are the first and only one to post this wonderful rendition.

Everyone has their favorite. Most say Nilsson or Flagstad. Many insist Varnay is incomparable.

My personal favorite is Waltraud Meier.

Voight seems like she is singing in an even higher register. Most of the other sopranos seem deeper. Thank you again for this....I have been waiting a LONG time for this and she did not disappoint !!!

  • You're welcome.

  • Many other 'sopranos' that sing this role started as Mezzos... that's likely what you're hearing.

  • @1488bill When you say singing in a higher register I believe what you are referring to is the coloring of her voice....Although a dramatic soprano, she does have stronger lyrical overtones to her voice in comparison to the other sopranos you named....sort of a brighter sound.

  • @flyinghow Thank you for those excellent points. You sure know about singing - I bet you have a great voice yourself. I am a mere fan of music and do not fathom the subtler nuances of scales, octaves, notes etc .... But I appreciate the professionals and the expert musicians who take the time to comment here on this particular page so I can learn something -They have great taste too if they are listening to this song -

  • @1488bill You are absolutely welcome...merely my opinion, though I did study voice for a great number of years and majored in music. And remember, if there were no fans, there would be no need for artists to perform, so don't discount yourself. I love a fan of good opera!
