osx86 noobs coming from Windows to explore Mac are even more annoying - too lazy to read howtos, asking silly simple stuff and understand nothing , even if you explain it in noob-speech. When you tell them about Unix commands to execute as sudo and tell them "it works the same way as in ubuntu", the answer is "I have Windows 7 and want mac. I Don't know Linux " .. when you tell them that OSX is based on the same underpinnings like Linux, they cannot believe it ;)and refuse to learn about ..
We were all once! With lots of help at the start I wouldn't now be a Slackware/Ubuntu/Gobo triple booter,so play nice eh? This elitist attitude a lot of Linux users have is what puts a lot of noobs off starting out with Linux and exactly why a few a few of started Anarchy Computer Corp and Anon Anarchist Action, if elitist piss off to Steve 'n' Bill land............now I guess I've NO friends left....lol I aim to please. ;-)
Linux is great. Fast, reliable, virus-free. But its only good for servers. For everything else, lets face it, you ll need Windows programs. Sure, SOME work with Wine, with none or A FEW problems. But even if it takes only one click more every time you use a program, if you work on your PC hours per day, it adds up to time you cant afford wasting. I installed XP- it gets the job done. Less graphics than Vista or 7, but faster.
@UltimatePisman Just trying to install Gentoo through Ubuntu. By "a loong way to go" I meant I still don't know how to do every possible thing on this platform (a heck of a lot more than on Windows though as CLI is a true friend here).
@droleniacoc the noobs expect a windows clone out of the box and then complain when something doesn't work like it does in windows.. well because It's Not. I agree with you, they need to stfu and rtfm
@droleniacoc Sometimes people just don't know 'what exactly to google'. I know somebody who wanted to try Ubuntu, but had some questions about installing it next to WinXP, but she didn't know the right words for it (like 'blue start-up screen you can manage settings in' as an equivalent for BIOS). She asked people on the internet forums, but everybody started to yell she just had to google and if she could 'quit being a noob'.
Sorry, not trying to be clever, or even mean to you or whatever ;)
I wonder what are thinking those people that believe government about 9/11 about building 7... Maybe it feel down due to too strong wind? Maybe they think that some fat guy kicked hard that building...don't know, but it is better to believe in those stories than think that it collapsed without no reason.
I only experience Ubuntu as slow on slow machines. I'm running Ubuntu as my only OS after I ditched Vista, and it's a great place to start for noobs. However, if an OS is supposed to automatically find your printer, camera etc. I suppose a few hiccups is only fair. A friend of mine suggested Gentoo, but I am simply too impatient to compile everything myself, I only compile when I have to. For pros though... it's probably great.
Oh, btw I liked your little hacker infomercial. :)
Compared to vista, Ubuntu is fast, but to other Linux distributions, its slow. I didn't mean to imply that Ubuntu is bad, its actually doing very well for a newer distro. It's just a lot of people come to Linux that aren't too comfortable with the command line. Since Ubuntu is for "beginners", they make a lot of GUIs for their applications, which slows things down.
Yea, Gentoo's installer is a real pain. Debian is pretty easy, but I prefer Slackware.
I tried Arch Linux with XFCE and I barely had to look at the Firefox icon before the thing opened. :D But I have to say that I really like Ubuntu's package manager and the easy installs. However, I fully respect those that got their first taste of the Linux experience and want more. Maybe I'll try another distro, I'm on the fence between SUSE and Fedora though...
I personally like Ubuntu 8 a lot I find is so easy to use.
But I have a doubt,I am thinking about using linux for CAD and 3D modeling/Rendering programs. Maybe Ubuntu is not poweful enough for these tasks? Should I change to OpenSuSe 11 or other distribution?
I have never used Opensuse so I couldn't tell you. Go to the Linux comparison page on wikipedia and see what sounds best. I think Ubuntu would be fine, but not the best.
Yeah, I know. I'm using Ubuntu right now considering I'm new to Linux. In several ways comparing Linux to Windows, it is, at first, very confusing learning different ways, especially when you grew up with windows(God forbid it happen to anyone else) I mean sure there's a lot of things complicated to understand as a noob, like all these terminal commands, but as time go's on, I have found that it is well worth the time, patience, and concentration.
