  • the fault in our system.

  • I have Ulcerative Colitis as well. Thankfully, my parents have insurance and I am only 20, so I am still under their insurance. Over the past 4 years since I started showing symptoms, I can't imagine the expense. ...Either way, UC sucks and I'm sorry you have it Hank. Hopefully you have gotten into some sort of remission. I'm working on that now. DFTBA

  • whats the syndrome he has?

  • KONY 2012

  • and this is the health care that america didnt want to get rid of. wow americans are stupid as fuck

  • @nutmed As an American.... I whole heartedly agree.

  • @nutmed I know, right. Capitalism is all well and good in some markets, but not the medical or educational markets.

  • Our health care is free, capatalism sucks

  • i wikied the disease my first words ouch and i feel for you bro

  • Yep, this is the one reason living in the U.K is a very nice thing....

Aside from that; it's kind of shite.

  • My first nerdfighter video :)

  • Make's me grateful to live in the UK where every prescription is £7.40 no matter what it is!

  • @thatawkwardmoment *makes

  • A friend of mine has ulcerative colitis. He doesn't take any kind of medication, mainly because as you said, there is no cure for it, but also, doctors have no idea what causes it. Maintain a good diet and research programs like Crossfit. My buddy is involved in that program and he is a health nut and he has found much more relief from his condition than he did while he was taking pills.

  • Flying thing at 3:45 :3

  • Damm you typo!

  • Yes, proud to by English.

  • You have a disease, the medicine price went up, and yet you think of others? You are a brilliant man, Hank Green, and someday you will be President of Earth.

  • I told the ceo to suck my balls. that is about as civil as i would like to be with him.

  • I take Lialda for my UC. Luckily my card lets me get it for just $10 a month :)

  • This is THE video that made me subscribe. I love you guys.

  • FREE HEALTHCARE, BITCHES

    - A Britan

  • I understand your thoughts, Hank.

If it helps, i also have a serious disease, which number one symptom is extreme pain EVERYWHERE.

    the thing is,

    this disease? not yet diagnosed.

Every doctor i go to says the same thing. i'll try ten different medications, they won't work, and they'll tell me they have no answer for me...

I know how frustrating it can get and how pissed off you can get at people.

  • I googled ulcerative colitis. It looks so painful. D:

  • If pain is your problem try marijuana natural safe and i bet you wont be pissed off anymore :)

  • So happy that I live in England. Long live the NHS.

  • So apparently on of the causes for your disease is.. Jewish ancestry?

  • i have the same illnes and im on the same medication holy shit

  • i would have thought u had add

  • 3:47-3:51 There's like a little white bug or something crawling around in the bottom right corner?

  • 3:46 Bug in the southeast corner of the screen :D

  • So, I had a similar problem with some antibiotics - I was paying $25 and then the price was raised to $750. When I looked into it, it turned out that the medication was produced by none other than our favorite Warner Chilcott! I was not a happy camper.

  • Remember the first cell phone? It weighed 2 pounds, looked like a brick, and cost $4,000!

Your colitis drug is the brick cell phone. It's the first one on the market that does what it does, so you will have to pay out the nose for it. In the coming years more companies will make better, less expensive drugs, and you can then move to those drugs. This is just how the world works. If they couldn't charge enough to cover the R&D, they wouldn't have made the drug to begin with & you'd be dead.

  • @HumbleWillis Despite what people think these days, you don't actually need a mobile phone to live a happy life without pain, so that's one big difference between that and medication. Also, this isn't the first from what he said, it's simply a slightly changed version so if you're working on the theory that things should get cheaper the more they're developed this doesn't make sense since the same thing used to cost 300 dollars and it's now twice that.

  • @Redthewarrior The fundamental principles of economics remain constant regardless of the product. Regarding this particular product, as with any drug ... the first one is free (or at least greatly discounted) so that customers can test it and see how good it is. Now that the product has a foothold on the market, the REAL price is charged. As always, the REAL price of a product that is expensive to capitalize is also (big surprise) expensive.

  • My mom had her colon removed because of Ulcerative colitis.

  • YAY NHS. OH WAIT NEVER MIND. Apparently the thing is next year i'm no longer able to get my prescription for free. So do you know what my long term plan is .... Moving to Wales. I will not pay stupid money so that i can live happily in England. I'd rather pay nothing and live a happy life in Wales. I feel sorry for Americans who always have to pay.

  • YAY FREE MARKET

  • Boo, America! *not proud to be American*

Just watch. One day I'll move to Canada.

  • @SnowingWolfGirl Good idea, then you'll just wait in line so long you'll die of the disease and not have to worry about paying for any drugs.

  • @HumbleWillis if you'll look in the mirror, you'll see someone with no understanding of the Canadian healthcare system.

  • I'm canadian and was just diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. While our healthcare is good, I still have to pay for my medicine.. :( That is so shitty, I'm not looking forward to this for the rest of my life.

  • Free Medication in the UK.

    Thank you NHS.

  • @PollyBreedDumb Nothing is free ... how much do you pay in taxes?

  • @HumbleWillis I'm a student, I don't pay squat :P

  • right after you mentioned ulcerative colitis, i googled it. i feel awful

  • Oh my gosh, Hank. I didn't know you had ulcerative colitis! My sister was diagnosed with it a year ago at age 13, and we can barely afford the hundreds of pills she has to take a month. I feel your pain!

  • Hey Hank, you should give us that guys number, I'd rather call then email. An email they can read 10 words of and then delete, calling someone calling is a different story. They either be rude, hang up, and causing more angry people, or they have to sit there an listen to as nerdfighteria brings a hail storm of pain crashing on them.

  • Sent an email. Behind you all the way, Hank!!!!!!

  • Socialized medicine doesn't put those costs in check, people, it just pays for it with everyone'se money. So yeah, he'd save money, but you'd be paying more in taxes. Curing the symptom does not work, the disease is the drug company that raised the price "just because they can".

  • *looks up symptoms of ulcerative colitis*

    Eeeeeewwwww

  • Those dirty sons of warner chilcotts!!!! Lets go kick their Warner Chilcotts!

  • anyone notice the bug in 3:46 or is it just me

  • i hate to not say something meaningful, because this is all very terrible and i completely sympathize...

    but that haircut looks gooooooooooooood.

  • Hmmm...

  • "Thank you for holding. Your call is very unportant to us."

  • GO NHS!!! and its generous prescription charge cap. And even more generous free prescriptions for kids and oldies and unemployed. Oh what a utopian society i find myself in.

  • ummm..... YAY AMERICA?

  • @FlyingPigscanfly711 lol eveyrones saying 'yay *insert country*' because those countires have national healthcare

  • I just bought 1000 shares of warner chilcott stock.

  • Hank spit at 3:26, far right.

  • Hank, I am truly proud of how calmly you made that phone call =)

  • yay australia

  • yay Denmark :)

  • YAY NORWAY

  • do u have ADD? lol jk but yeah id be pissed to if my 50$ bill turn to a 600$ bill

  • I should make a meme. Economic problems, Move to Canada

  • I want one of those sweaters.

  • do you really talk that fast?

  • @Coecoo Wow your an asshole

  • @halotree18 By stating facts?

Ty for sharing your opinion but YOU'RE still as much of a moron as he is.

  • @Coecoo How is he enabling himself to profit from the video? He's just stating that people doing what the pharmaceutical companies are doing is sickening, and it sucks for him

  • @halotree18 You think 30 seconds advertisements are a standard on videos here on YT?

    Nope.

He applied for partnership, waited until he got accepted, read through all the terms and as he uploaded this video he enabled advertisements on it with his g00gle

He is making cash of every view and advertisement click.

  • @Coecoo So the fact that he is smart enough to activate advertisements which go towards not his own personal gain but to the gain of the community makes the fact that he dislikes the disgusting increase in his drug whorish and terrible

  • @halotree18 How is him making profit from people's inconvenience into his google adsense account "gain of the community"?

  • @Coecoo ....? The money he gains goes towards the community....

  • @halotree18 Are you a broken record or just downright retarded?

How is it going towards the "Community"?

  • @Coecoo ... He spends the money on projects that benefit the community 1) Your pants 2) SciShow 3) every single awesome project they put out....

  • @halotree18 "Projects". I take it then you have the income logs from his adsense along with all necessary receipts and bank transfer logs? :)

  • @Coecoo No, I don't but I take it you do , considering your complaining about the fact that they receive that money in a way that doesn't benefit you. ;)

  • @halotree18 Yeah, see, I don't need to dis-prove something because It hasn't even been proven yet. :)

But I take it from your lack of intellect and information that you don't know shit being the retard-ass fanboy you are.

  • @Coecoo Well, considering you make the point that you don't need disprove what has not been proven then I I don't need to disprove the "fact" (and you were calling this fact) that he is being greedy and "whorish" for letting a VERY short ad run so he can function with his ENTIRELY OPTIONAL video easier and likely help out the community in a more awesome way. Now seeing as either you have terrible cause of tourrretes syndrome or your just an idiot/troll, I'll let everyone else take it from here.

  • @halotree18 Funny thing is if you make a claim, you need to have credible evidence in order to oppose facts.

And the fact currently is: He's earning money.

That virtual money he's earning goes into his Google-adsense account depending on the amount of views and ad-clicks which in turn is translated into a real-life currency which goes to his associated bank-account. Now instead of giving me evidence that he's spending this other than personal you're calling me a troll. AKA u FAIL.

  • @Coecoo Last comment from me, I GAVE YOU EVIDENCE YOU RETARD

  • @halotree18 Google what evidence really means then come back to me you gullible fucktard. ;)

  • @Coecoo Now, if you are to lazy to sit still for AT LEAST 5 seconds or a MAXIMUM of 30 seconds then you need to get outside and get a life

  • @Coecoo hahahahahahahahahahaha you know nothing of him do you every one please show him who hank is, for he has insulted him.

  • @duchashes English please.

I know jerking off to Pokémon instead of going to school was a big hinder for you 5 years ago but at the very least use the built-in spell checker.

  • @Coecoo i dont care my grammar is a problem i am dealing with,

but it is entirely irrelevant to the matter at hand. you not having any idea what you are talking about also you commenting on my grammar supports the possibility of you being a troll.

  • @duchashes Deal with that problem of yours before trying to communicate with me through it please.

  • @Coecoo Basically you think it's unfair because he's making money off his videos to help him take care of the expensive medicine.

    In short, u jelly? xD

  • @Thilinus What part of me exactly would be jealous of him having a inflammatory bowel disease?

Oh, nevermind. You're just a fucktard fanboy.

  • @Coecoo You're now reading between the lines? I see, that's how desperate you've become after having nothing to counter my facts with.

    Kid, please.

  • @Thilinus You want to taste my fucktard fanboy laser you immigrant slut? Learn to jerk off before attempting to make a coherent argument you stinking pile of shit.

  • @Coecoo So you've gone to insulting as a last resort because you couldn't hold a proper arguement stable.

You've lost already, kid. But keep typing. It's fun to see you try.

  • @Thilinus The only last resort here is your tiny excuse of a dick, faggot.

But then again, you're just jelly of my subscribers xDDDD

  • @Coecoo Keep going, kid. Give me your best shot.

But then again, you're just a poor adopted troll living in his parents' basemen-... Sorry, I forgot you're adopted. xD

  • @Thilinus Your not worth my best shot, n00b. Slapping your face with my dick is enough to make a little cunt like you squeal.

  • @Coecoo "n00b" oh shit, that one was original. Got anything else to say? Seeing as you lost the arguement before we even started. xD

  • @Thilinus Avoidin the subject cuz u bad brah?

  • @Coecoo Coming from you? Try harder.

    Get@me kid.

  • @Thilinus Stop increasing world suck, guys! :(

  • I now feel my bookcase is incredibly pathetic compared to yours now.

I believe several of my mom's medications have done this before, her pharmacies have also stopped selling her meds without warning a few times as well. I'm always worried that she'll just stop taking them because its such a hassle to get them and they're expensive.

  • I have gone through this exact scenario myself. This is not a rare event. It is rather a corporate strategy. Charge 1000 times more than the medicine costs to produce and blame than on R&D costs. Even though the medicine is twenty years old, the prices just continue to rise. Did they come up with that big improvement some time ago, then wait with that nugget until now (improvement being the only way to extend the patent)? It's all about money, power, and collusion with... with whom do you think?

  • I have Ulcerative Colitis and use Lyalida but im prbly going to have to get my colon removed YAY!!!!

  • The money in the prescription not the cure. The pharmacy companies will never cure anything.

  • YAY CANADA!

  • @malindizoo YAY BRITAIN!

  • @Jaccington CRAP AMERICA!

  • @Jaccington YAY CANADA (A LOYAL ALLIE TO BRITAIN)!

  • @Jaccington YAY NEW ZEALAND!

  • @Rememberthisname2010 YAY COMANWEALTH COUNTRIES

  • You have Scott Westerfeld books! And Harry Potter! And is that Maximum Ride I see up there? Might be wrong.

  • What ended up happening?

  • Hank did you drink some coffee before you made this video?

  • I take that exact same medicine. Colitis sucks.

  • this is warner chilcotting madness!!! madness i tell u!!!

  • Hank! You should start a change.org petition! That will get their attention!

  • Hey look Hank! jezebel.com/5865584/how-evil-is-your-birth-control-manufacturer

Its a made of awesome article confused at why Warner Chilcott is defined by the internet as "To commit an act of unspeakable evil and uncalled for malice, just because you can"

  • So much Hank Room!

Watching you re-categorize your book shelf is highly amusing.

    Also,

    Lo siento, Hank.

  • I have just watched this video made by Hank Green, in which he talks about the increase in the cost of his Ulcerative Colitis medication (Asacol HD). As a supporter and admirer of Hank (and of justice) I was just wondering why this happened so unexpectedly (and without the notification of doctors) and how you can justify bringing the price of a medication on which many people rely from $50 dollars to over $600? I would also like to know why his Patients' Saving Card expired early.

  • Has this been resolved? Because I just emailed Warner Chilcott....

  • Move to Canada. We'll welcome you with hugs and free drugs :)

  • @rowbsie Actually we wouldn't. The immigration office can and will deny entry to applicants if "Their admission might cause excessive demand on existing social or health services provided by the government." So basically we have rules in place to prevent people from coming here just for the health care. If you have a preexisting condition and no suitable relation to sponsor your immigration... access denied.

  • I like that Hanks not so much worried about himself, but those less fortunate than himself. Hes like the opposite of Scrooge. Egoorcs? Hank is Egoorcs.

  • TYT did a news report on a similar problem now happening with cancer drugs

    /watch?v=AHvSaTAm6G4

  • Hey Roger, GO WARNER CHILCOTT YOURSELF... is the message I will send to him.

  • thank you for the information. :)

  • use curascript. thats where i get my uc meds (6mp WORST DRUG EVER). its so considerably less expensive that it sorta changed my life.

  • Unfortunately the pharmaceutical industry is a business. And Chilcott just got a little more busy.

  • Did anyone else see that weird light in the bottom right corner at 3:46?

  • @QueenMagslieofSweden I think it's a bug in the corner

  • what is your book about voldemort??? (top of your rearranged left bookshelf, turned horizontally)

  • Comment removed

  • Is there any way you can get samples from your doctor? Or have you tried to contact the pharmaceutical company who makes the drugs? Sometimes they can help you out and either give it to you free or cheaper based on your income. I thankfully moved to Sweden, and have only about 300.00 a year to pay on my prescriptions, then they are free... I pay about 150.00 a year for doctors, then it's free... I wish USA would wake up and understand that national health care is a GOOD thing.

  • just tell him that you will switch to a different medication if he doesn't fix the price.

  • See, this is why I like Ireland :P I'm on a drug called Pentasa for my UC, it's the same as Asacol (they both are made from Mesalazine), it costs €260 a month but because certain people in Ireland get free healthcare and perscriptions, I just have to pay a goverment levy of €1!

so yeah, your health system is screwed up and mine is unsustainable! :D

  • Hank, at Buck A Day Pharmacy, we know all too well the frustration you are experiencing. We hear stories like this every day. Luckily, we are in a position to assist many Americans such as yourself. We even have a program for first time customers to get a 30 day supply of Asacol for free to try out our service. Check our website and compare prices for yourself and let us know how we can help you.

  • I googled your condition. Jeez, that sounds like it can make your life suck, a lot. Considering this actually happened several months ago, I don't know how relevant this is, but I really hope ou can find a more affordable drug. *hugs* You're made of Awesome Hank, obviously your crappy bowels are only a minor infringement of suck upon the Awesome you put into the world.

  • isn't that false advertising? And a whole slew of other illegal things? Seeing as this was months ago I don't know what happened but I hope they got sued or punished.

  • anyone else see the thing go across the bottom right of the screen at 3:43?

  • "Get plenty of beneficial bacteria--which will help to heal your intestinal tract--in your diet. My favorite way to do this is by drinking cultured raw milk kefir--an incredibly healthy enzyme- and probiotic-rich food that tastes like tart yogurt.

Many have also noticed that Probiotics, a highly effective probiotic, is particularly useful for this problem."

I hope that helps! Anyway, it's worth a shot, right?

  • "Avoid grains until symptoms are under control. Many with inflammatory bowel disease have gluten sensitivities. Additionally, the grains tend to increase insulin levels in most.

Make sure your vitamin D levels are optimized. Vitamin D appears to be nearly as effective as the omega-3 fats that are mentioned in this study. It is my belief that it is gross malpractice for a physician to take care of a person with this problem and not regularly monitor their vitamin D levels.

  • Poor Hank. Sorry, buddy. That's rough. I do think that you can cure yourself or greatly reduce the symptoms of your ulcerative colitis by making some lifestyle changes, though...if it's important enough to you to do so.

I did some research. Here's what I found is supposed to help:

Increase the amount of omega-3 fats in your diet.

Avoid sugar, as it will increase inflammation by increasing your insulin levels.

  • Go look at the lower right at 3:46 what crawls across the screen?

  • We don't have these problems in Canada. The reason America doesn't have our health care system is because the rich don't want to wait in the hospital with the poor. The rich want to walk in a hospital and go past the waiting room filled with poor people and flip them off.

  • I think you should move to Canada. I'm just saying.....

  • I generally try and avoid falling into the "our way is better than yours" trap of cultural ignorance, but seriously America this is ridiculous. Summed up here, in 4 minutes flat, is all the evidence any sensible person should ever need in order to realise it's time you joined the rest of the civilised world and nationalised your health care. At the very least you need better regulation of private health care to stop this sort of shit happening. It's absolutely disgusting.

  • @marquoth but that would make us more of a socialist nation and we love our democracy. Cause giving all people access to health care at the expense of a bit of our money a year is an injustice right..and socialism..which is the ultimate evil right?Like communism..And the government shouldn't have too much power over our affairs. How dare they even try?

You see the absolute idiocracy that exists here. I don't know sometimes I just have no hope. This isn't cultural ignorance on your part at all.

  • @iluvdrakeandjosh I don't think for a moment that there's a "correct" solution to the healthcare situation, but this idea that democracy and socialism are mutually exclusive needs to go away asap. Socialism is a description of certain kinds of policy, democracy is a method of choosing policy. What if socialist policies are democratically chosen? That doesn't make them any less democratic OR any less socialist. Just because the US democracy seems to avoid socialism doesn't make the two anathema.

  • @marquoth tell that to everyone who uses that as their justification for fighting so hard against nation wide healthcare. Everything seems to be stuck in stupid little categories and everyone is too stuck in their tribal identities to want to change things. "this is us and that is them end of story". It's not everyone but it's enough to stint a lot of progress.

  • I no longer have insurance which is a huge problem bc I take three daily medicines. Had to stop taking one bc I cannot afford it. it's a sad world we will live wherein money buys health.

  • I love that Warner Chilcott is now a curse word...

    because Hank Green said...

    MAKE IT SO, NERDFIGHTERS!~

    And we did x3

  • I really appreciate this video because I too have ulcertive colitis, but unfortunately I can barely afford my medication and I am constantly fighting to keep my symptoms under control. I'm barely able to afford doctors visits or the occasional hospital stay when symptoms out of hand. It was really nice to see someone who was also going through my struggle and understand. Thank you, Hank Green for the wonderful post of this video. Stay awesome :]

  • Dude, I so get you. I have chronic pancreatitis. To keep working, living, making a life I have to control the pain. That's my life in a nutshell (often literally, muahahaha), pain control. My meds went from about $50 a month to over $350 a month in one fell swoop. Of course that was an insurance company a****ck, but it didn't feel any better. Hang in there!

  • I live with my sister and her boyfriend, and he's got Crohn's, which has connections to UC. He doesn't take his meds... because they are too expensive. This problem is out of control. We should start a revolution!

  • In Britain prescriptions are £7 or free to those over 60 or on low income.

Not trying to rub it in...just saying...

  • Comment removed

  • @trailstar1 Prescriptions are free for everyone where I live in Britain!

  • @trailstar1 Yeah, we can hardy complain.. But I'm British so I'm going to anyway.

I haven't had to buy a prescription in my entire life, but I just turned 19 so now I have to pay even though I'm still in full-time education... I must have had about 100 prescriptions over the last 2 years (all free), though I won't need so many now but it'll still probably be worth buying the certificate for about £100 that gives you one year unlimited prescriptions...

  • I also have UC, and I know the crap (pun lol) that comes along with dealing with it and medications.

I really hope the best to you and i know the feeling and im gonna write my letter in the morning :)
