My cannon 40D doesn't have grid display through my view finder. Now it does on live view but I don't want to use that. So how do I use the rule of thirds with my cannon 40 D when it doesn't have the grid line

I work as a portrait photographer. Rule of thirds is not something that is understood very well by people. I get really tired of hearing from people that "it's not a good picture because the head is not centered" "There is too much space on one side." A lot of people like to bulls eye their photos too. Don't photograph a single person horizontally with the head smack dab in the middle of the frame. For some reason people like their portraits to look like drivers License photos.

People, if your sense of aesthetic is so impaired that your pictures are actually improved by drawing a tic-tac-toe board on your LCD, you should probably start looking for another hobby! Learning to TRUST your eye and your innate sense of compositional balance is the only way you will make photographs that are both unique and satisfying. If composition was so easy that "Put the rock at the third intersection." always produced interesting images, photography would have died off years ago.

@geonerd Rule of thirds is just a basic lesson. If you are just a beginner, you will get interesting shots using rule of third. As you progress, you become more creative and brealing the rules gives you an amazing pictures.

It's not that the video is lame, you people are lame (or "gay" if that's the word you want to use to put a negative connotation on something) because you can't grasp the simple concept of the rule of thirds. "Trying to feed bullshit to the public"? hahahaha the rule of thirds is apparently something that shouldn't be shared with the public.

The rule of thirds is something that photographers and videographers constantly keep in mind. I find this video explained it well.
