This is nothing like the album version which is slower - I much prefer this live version. Steve probably only speeded it up to fit into the time slot he was allocated!
I once had a Denver girl. A lifetime ago but it holds like yesterday. Thanks for posting, thanks Mr. Earle for the cover, and thanks Mr van Zandt for your loving genius. Goodnight, Kathy.
I've been an Earle fan for a while now but have recently discovered TVZ. With that being said, I've always hated tribute albums but this record is totally worth spinning on a daily basis. This song in particular is one of the best on the set.
I am no expert, but I think this is his signature M-21 Martin. If you look here on youtube for "Backstage Steve Earle", you will find a video of his guitar tech talking about Steve's guitar.
@californiaclaybo Although what we're hearing is the signal through the undersaddle pickup going through a Fishman Aura pedal. I think he said once he uses the George Martin patch, but that was a year or so before that.
Also, his signature guitar came out right before he started recording the Townes album, so it'd be a 2008 or 2009, I think?
I agree Letterman seems to have respect for Steve.Whether Shaeffer does or not..Well I'm not sure.Had a friend do that gig once said Paul was a bit of a smartass.
I love Steve and Townes. I love that Steve did the album "Townes" because it is a way to get the lyrics of Townes back to the world... Most of the music these days have no soul like Townes or Steve and it's a shame.
@johnpsorgi I sincerely doubt neither Dave nor Paul have a whole lot to do with the musical acts that get booked. That's going to be more up to advertisers and the network. They like money and ratings more than Paul or Dave do.
I disagree - I am sure there is some pressure from advertisers, but the show has many musical gusets who are not commercially sucessful. I think there would be far more pop music on the show if it was just up to the advertisers. The show seems to really try to support lesser known artists, especially alternative rock and alt-country.

Steve, what the fuck? He's such a great songwriter, but lately he has lost his faith I guess. I'm a big Steve Earle fan, but when he brought out WSS with all that sampleshit on it I was confused, so went to see him live in 2008. Guess what? He had a FUCKING DJ on stage! He totally ruined his songs. Now, he brought out an album of TVZ songs. I know that Townes was his teacher and friend but bringing out this is a big disappointment! We need the Dukes back! AMEN!
Fantastic... and I love the fact that Steve has been on Letterman so many times. Letterman never makes fun of him either, like he does of so many other guests.
I like the thought of that :-) Huge Waits and Dylan fan. And Earle is making his mark on me now - saw him in Basingstoke, England on Wednesday. Great show.
townes better than him

@miralgo1962 -As drunk as I am noww, and believe me I am slammed, I would never spell 'sped' 'speeded'. A very insightful observation, nonetheless!

Schaeffer doesn't book any acts... he is the musical director for all the music his band does... he's not a booking agent....

is he playing this in open G?
MilesPittman 1 year ago
@MilesPittman Open D. It's really pretty simple once you get the tuning (not simple to play it as perfectly as he does mind you)

Does anybody know what year and model Martin guitar he is playing? The tones and resonance are fabulous!

@californiaclaybo It's a Steve Earle signature guitar, actually. M-21. I've got a custom M-36 myself that has similar specs.

Looks more like Allen Ginsberg the older he gets. And we need another Ginsberg.

I dunno... Letterman is a huge Waits fan. Given that vein of interest, definitely not inconceivable that he'd be into Earle and Van Zandts stuff.

Paul Schaeffer I am sure books the musical performers on this show...not letterman.

I just submitted a tab at ultimate guitar. If it gets accepted try searching for it again in like 2 or 3 days. It is a tab and not chords.
