  • townes better than him

  • @miralgo1962 -As drunk as I am noww, and believe me I am slammed, I would never spell 'sped' 'speeded'. A very insightful observation, nonetheless!

  • I'm drunk on tequila and beer sips, and this was beautiful as fuck! THANKS STEVE!

  • This is nothing like the album version which is slower - I much prefer this live version. Steve probably only speeded it up to fit into the time slot he was allocated!

  • I once had a Denver girl. A lifetime ago but it holds like yesterday. Thanks for posting, thanks Mr. Earle for the cover, and thanks Mr van Zandt for your loving genius. Goodnight, Kathy.

  • Linked to this from my acoustic guitar blog (addy in profile). Thanks for uploading

  • Not Gay, Kisses for playin' the second best Townes songs of all time, the first one would be "Rake"

  • I've been an Earle fan for a while now but have recently discovered TVZ. With that being said, I've always hated tribute albums but this record is totally worth spinning on a daily basis. This song in particular is one of the best on the set.

  • Schaeffer doesn't book any acts... he is the musical director for all the music his band does... he's not a booking agent....

  • is he playing this in open G?

  • @MilesPittman Open D. It's really pretty simple once you get the tuning (not simple to play it as perfectly as he does mind you)

  • @MilesPittman Open D

  • Does anybody know what year and model Martin guitar he is playing? The tones and resonance are fabulous!

  • @californiaclaybo

I am no expert, but I think this is his signature M-21 Martin. If you look here on youtube for "Backstage Steve Earle", you will find a video of his guitar tech talking about Steve's guitar.

  • @californiaclaybo It's a Steve Earle signature guitar, actually. M-21. I've got a custom M-36 myself that has similar specs.

  • @californiaclaybo Although what we're hearing is the signal through the undersaddle pickup going through a Fishman Aura pedal. I think he said once he uses the George Martin patch, but that was a year or so before that.

Also, his signature guitar came out right before he started recording the Townes album, so it'd be a 2008 or 2009, I think?

  • @everysinglenamesgone Thanks for all that Info!!

  • I agree Letterman seems to have respect for Steve.Whether Shaeffer does or not..Well I'm not sure.Had a friend do that gig once said Paul was a bit of a smartass.

  • Looks more like Allen Ginsberg the older he gets. And we need another Ginsberg.

  • And probably blows as many dudes as Ginsberg also,

  • I love Steve and Townes. I love that Steve did the album "Townes" because it is a way to get the lyrics of Townes back to the world... Most of the music these days have no soul like Townes or Steve and it's a shame.

  • I dunno... Letterman is a huge Waits fan. Given that vein of interest, definitely not inconceivable that he'd be into Earle and Van Zandts stuff.

  • Paul Schaeffer I am sure books the musical performers on this show...not letterman.

  • @johnpsorgi I sincerely doubt neither Dave nor Paul have a whole lot to do with the musical acts that get booked. That's going to be more up to advertisers and the network. They like money and ratings more than Paul or Dave do.

  • @everysinglenamesgone

I disagree - I am sure there is some pressure from advertisers, but the show has many musical gusets who are not commercially sucessful. I think there would be far more pop music on the show if it was just up to the advertisers. The show seems to really try to support lesser known artists, especially alternative rock and alt-country.

  • @nilradem

    oops - guests

  • @everysinglenamesgone

By the way, Steve's son Justin Townes Earle is supposed to be on the show this Wednesday 1/5/2010.

  • Letterman is great to remember a talent like Steve Earle & Towns van Zandt...he knows his music.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm so glad that Dave went out of his way to pay tribute to Townes, my musical hero. RIP

  • Genius!

  • i didn't kno letterman wasa steve earl fan until i saw this air.

  • Fantastic... and I love the fact that Steve has been on Letterman so many times. Letterman never makes fun of him either, like he does of so many other guests.

  • this song is amazing man.

  • does anyone know where i can get this tab tried ultimate guitar but they only had the chords????

  • I just submitted a tab at ultimate guitar. If it gets accepted try searching for it again in like 2 or 3 days. It is a tab and not chords.

  • If that was your tab i saw on ultimate guitar then thx for that... I'd have thanked you via ultimate guitar but i didnt know how...

  • Great post - saw it the end of it last night, and it sounded good :) Still does...

Wish I could get my hands on the tab for it...

  • it sounds like an open chord tuning. maybe open d. you could just try watching the video

  • Its in open e. . . or d witha capo on the second fret. also. . the travis picking is really important to master on this one.

  • Steve Rules. Saw him @ Wolf Trap, VA last night. He and John Prine sang "Paradise" together. KICK ASS

  • holy shit that's amazing. Almost as good as tom waits and bob dylan playing together.

  • I like the thought of that :-) Huge Waits and Dylan fan. And Earle is making his mark on me now - saw him in Basingstoke, England on Wednesday. Great show.

  • If you love waits and Dylan, and are just now getting into Earle, go back and discover Townes!

  • i love my steve xx thanks for sharing! Jenny in Cali xx

  • So good, saw it last night from Saudi Arabia... Thanks for the post.
