i just downloade system shock 2 last week and played it for the first time.......that has to be the best game i have ever played at least one of them...i mean i agree with everything you sayd the story is so good the acting the gameplay everything i was blown away by everything but mostly the sound man fucking amazing sound effects i just loved every second of it
I heard the reason they never made a sequel isn't just because Looking Glass broke up, but because parts of the license are owned by multiple people, but Bioshock was the spiritual successor of System Shock's 1 and 2.
I'm sure the poly count is higher than 15! But the Rebirth mod looks great. Ironically the poorest model in the entire game is the main character, though he is only shown twice.

Doom 3 was not at all scary for me, It felt like quick action game, with cool story (logs etc) to cool me down :D System shock 2 was the scariest game, the only one that came close was Dead Space... But without the SS2 "feel" (that you can find in Bioshock). BTW The end of SS2 suggests SS3... I want to avoid spoilers but COME ON! She's out there! xD Niceee...

yeah i feel you on the headphones, it always got to the point when i had to stop due to the sheer unrelenting terror. Horror movies just dont cut it anymore. Its just a constant panic attack.

A game that is STILL waiting for the rest to catch up. Bioshock, but MP anyone?? Not great to look at anymore, but that doesn't matter at all. The co-op multiplayer was so innovative. I still get together with friends and LAN this game - we play it through about once a year. Get a good character mix together - nothing better. OSA FTW!!
The genius thing about SS2 for me was just how stressful and tense the whole game was.
For some, this is a big turn-off, but once you're into the game it creates such a powerful horror atmosphere. Not much in the game was necessarily extremely scary on its own, but the real feelings of isolation and scrounging for stuff and extreme mental stress are more powerful in this game than any other.
ss2 was so pioneering for its time and scared the sh1t outta me. I would love a sequel but i can forsee the makers playing safe and making a mediocre game instead of really making a great game like the old looking glass teams did. Thief kicked ass aswell

I'm one of the people that also don't care about the polies. I have to say I dislike the rebirth models. They change the looks aesthetically, instead of just making it high poly. The SHTUP is good though.
Along the lines of the logs, you forgot to mention the ghosts that pop up every so often. I totally agree with you though, System Shock 2 was way underrated.

I also play in total darkness which helps isolate your view and holds off any distractions, making this game (for me at least) the scariest ever!
Indeed. Dead Space is space horror survival in its finest incarnation to date! Definitely worth a try.
Another recommendation - I don't know if you've tried F.E.A.R yet but I personally found that creepier then Doom. I wouldn't worry about the two expansions and FEAR 2 - the original is the best of the series.

I played this game(the whole thing) on magic mushrooms, so it was incredibly visceral for me. I felt like I was literally there every step of the way. It was honestly the best time of my life. I agree. EA, put out a new SS3 game for gods sake.
SS2, Half-Life and Homeworld are old-skool'ish games that are infinitely replayable. Yes, we all hold out for SS3 (I was dreadfully disappointed by BioShock. Not a fan of steampunk). However I was VERY happy with Dead Space.
Totally agree! RPG and story are so good, personally I preferred the sound on SS2 to Doom 3 and Dead Space. Awesome review. I love this game, I also enjoyed X-Com, as it was more simple and also had some RPG elements. SS was scary. Not freaky, but creepy, and definitely a good storyline.

I think the low poly models are actually crucial to the freakiness factor of the game, and shouldn't be messed with. It makes all the people, enemies etc look like possessed dolls, same with Thief. Trust me, don't mod it.

System Shock 2 is my 2nd favorite game of all-time, and I've been playing games since the NES/EGA days. 2nd to what? Well, System Shock 1 actually. It plays almost exactly the same except the setting, Citadel Station, was designed in such a way that makes you feel like a rat in a maze. On higher difficulty levels it plays out like an epic chess match between you and Shodan. Everyone, well everyone who can get put up with 640x480 SVGA graphics, should play it.

Oh, and after that pick up System Shock 2, install the texture, model and sound mods and play it for one of the most hair-raising experiences PC games can provide.
i actually think the graphics play a minor role in truly compelling classic fps games. say unreal, half life, system shock 2.. doesn't really matter what the sprites and textures look like, it's the atmosphere that matters. i mean, i used to feel like i was IN the game playing wolf-3d years and years back.
ss2 is one of my all-time favourite games, and yeah what you said about doom3 is true, at times it blatantly rips ss2 off. which isn't all bad.
SS2 is always on my HD and it's a good thing too cause after I played Bioshock I had to go back and play SS2 go get over my disappointment.
I think the sound in SS2 really made up for the graphics. Just like you said about the sound in Doom3, I got the same feeling with SS2. Hearing a Hybrid yelling "Ruuunn, ruuunnn! and not knowing where it's coming from is the creepiest fucking thing. Makes me freeze every time. I think it also has one of the best stories of a game ever.
If Levine was able to get the rights back to the SS franchise, then I would get excited. Otherwise, I'd rather see a SS2 remake. EA would surely screw up SS3 as it wouldn't have the story or depth of SS2. It would just be a dumbed down button masher made to appeal to 12 year old console gamers.
Sadly enough, the reason why the creators made Bioshock, becuse they can't make anymore System Shock games, back then they where looking glass studios, they had to sell the license to EA Games. (oddly enough, EA never used it...)

Personally, I don't want another SS game. SHODAN keeps her potency because she has yet to be completely bested. In SS3, she would likely return, and if she was thwarted again, she would lose some of the fear around her. Also, the original team is gone, and therefore the sequels would likely lose out on the original feel of the game. I like SHODAN, and seeing her die a final death or even seeing her defeated would cheapen her godlike status. She has what she wanted now: Immortality and god status
Dude!.... SS2 came out in '99, back then we were still using cards like the S3 Virge, rendition V2200, Voodoo1, 2, etc. The level of detail on SS2 for it's time(9 years ago) was great! STOP BITCHING ABOUT THE DETAIL! You can't unbox a game 8 years after it's release and expect state-of-the-art graphics!
There is the SS2 rebirth model/texture pack, get it, install it, be happy. SS3 is likely not gonna happen, sorry. no news on it since last year, and at that time it was shelved. :(

System Shock 2 is (to ME) THE SCARIEST GAMES of all time! EGM's top games of 2000 (SS2 missed their 1999 release?) gave SS2 SCARIEST GAME award and BEST SOUND DESIGN award. You should get an old PCI AUREAL 3D sound card and run the game with positional audio. Go to Audio settings and adjust the positional Audio bias to your liking with A3D Enable sound. Play with headphones @ night. It enhances that awesome sound. You will really REALLY feel as if someone is behind you ALL the time. I sure did!

EA do something like that? Hell will freeze over first. Plus, I don't trust anyone other than Ken Levine to make a worthy sequel. There is a RUMOR that EA has handed system shock 3 to its redwood shores studio. They made the Godfather game. Again, its just a rumor.
We can only hope. I'm just hoping that some crack team just take SS2 and gives it new textures. I'd be happy with that. And fixes the audio too, you can only hear something 5 feet away, but then again it was made so long ago ;)

what i love about this game is the theme of nature (the many) vs technology (shodan)
i also love how difficult this game is, i remember buying it expecting another doom but its realy more survival/horror-ish
and offcourse the bitchin music

bioshock sucks ass compared to system shock 2, but not compared to it it is a good game BUT IT ISN'T FUCKING SYSTEM SHOCK 2 AND THEY SHOULD HAVE JUST MADE SYSTEM SHOCK 3 INSTEAD OF GIVING IT AWAY TO FUCKING EA TO FUCK IN THE ASS.

System Shock 2 is my 2nd favorite game of all-time, and I've been playing games since the NES/EGA days. 2nd to what? Well, System Shock 1 actually. It plays almost exactly the same except the setting, Citadel Station, was designed in such a way that makes you feel like a rat in a maze. On higher difficulty levels it plays out like an epic chess match between you and Shodan. Everyone, well everyone who can get put up with 640x480 SVGA graphics, should play it.

I'm the same way. SS1 was my favorite, 2 is a close, close 2nd. Really wish it worked better on XP/Vista.

No, it's not. Look up "Spiritual Successor" on wikipedia. Then look up System Shock. Then look up System Shock 2. Then stop making ignorant comments.
Oh, and after that pick up System Shock 2, install the texture, model and sound mods and play it for one of the most hair-raising experiences PC games can provide.

i actually think the graphics play a minor role in truly compelling classic fps games. say unreal, half life, system shock 2.. doesn't really matter what the sprites and textures look like, it's the atmosphere that matters. i mean, i used to feel like i was IN the game playing wolf-3d years and years back.
ss2 is one of my all-time favourite games, and yeah what you said about doom3 is true, at times it blatantly rips ss2 off. which isn't all bad.

SS2 is always on my HD and it's a good thing too cause after I played Bioshock I had to go back and play SS2 go get over my disappointment.
I think the sound in SS2 really made up for the graphics. Just like you said about the sound in Doom3, I got the same feeling with SS2. Hearing a Hybrid yelling "Ruuunn, ruuunnn! and not knowing where it's coming from is the creepiest fucking thing. Makes me freeze every time. I think it also has one of the best stories of a game ever.

If Levine was able to get the rights back to the SS franchise, then I would get excited. Otherwise, I'd rather see a SS2 remake. EA would surely screw up SS3 as it wouldn't have the story or depth of SS2. It would just be a dumbed down button masher made to appeal to 12 year old console gamers.

Sadly enough, the reason why the creators made Bioshock, becuse they can't make anymore System Shock games, back then they where looking glass studios, they had to sell the license to EA Games. (oddly enough, EA never used it...)
Now then I think about it, I could make an unofficial sequel to SS, sadly enough, it would just be a linear FPS, I can't make RPG elements. :(

Personally, I don't want another SS game. SHODAN keeps her potency because she has yet to be completely bested. In SS3, she would likely return, and if she was thwarted again, she would lose some of the fear around her. Also, the original team is gone, and therefore the sequels would likely lose out on the original feel of the game. I like SHODAN, and seeing her die a final death or even seeing her defeated would cheapen her godlike status. She has what she wanted now: Immortality and god status

Dude!.... SS2 came out in '99, back then we were still using cards like the S3 Virge, rendition V2200, Voodoo1, 2, etc. The level of detail on SS2 for it's time(9 years ago) was great! STOP BITCHING ABOUT THE DETAIL! You can't unbox a game 8 years after it's release and expect state-of-the-art graphics!
There is the SS2 rebirth model/texture pack, get it, install it, be happy. SS3 is likely not gonna happen, sorry. no news on it since last year, and at that time it was shelved. :(

No no, the game wasn't stellar when it came out , graphics-wise. Compare it to half life or anything out at that time, and it was pretty unremarkable.
I do use the rebirth and it's amazing :)

System Shock 2 is (to ME) THE SCARIEST GAMES of all time! EGM's top games of 2000 (SS2 missed their 1999 release?) gave SS2 SCARIEST GAME award and BEST SOUND DESIGN award. You should get an old PCI AUREAL 3D sound card and run the game with positional audio. Go to Audio settings and adjust the positional Audio bias to your liking with A3D Enable sound. Play with headphones @ night. It enhances that awesome sound. You will really REALLY feel as if someone is behind you ALL the time. I sure did!

EA do something like that? Hell will freeze over first. Plus, I don't trust anyone other than Ken Levine to make a worthy sequel. There is a RUMOR that EA has handed system shock 3 to its redwood shores studio. They made the Godfather game. Again, its just a rumor.

We can only hope. I'm just hoping that some crack team just take SS2 and gives it new textures. I'd be happy with that. And fixes the audio too, you can only hear something 5 feet away, but then again it was made so long ago ;)
