@flamingmyass If you stick your finger into a trap it will also close - but it'd never be strong enough to hurt it. In contrary, this could damage the plant because closing the trap uses up its energy (which it won't get back because it doesn't gain anything to eat).

@fuzzymatt292 It uses acid indeed, but you must imagine the process much slower... (Devouring an insect takes the plant 7-10 days!) And the plant will not even TRY to devour your finger or any insect which is too big for the leaf. The acid couldn't stay in a leaf which was not entirely closed. So, even if you put your finger into it and let it there the whole night without moving, the leaf just will open up again after some hours...

@NezorePresents It doesn't have a consciousness, if that's what you mean. The closing mechanism happens automatically, so the venus fly trap can not decide whether to close or not.

@eldind026 Each trap, that means each leaf of the plant, can devour around 3 insects. Or it can close an open again up to 7 times empty. Then it becomes black and dies. If the plant gets enough energy out of those insects it stays alive and grows new leaves for each one that dies. But if it happens too often that the traps close (and therefore use energy) without a living insect being in there, it may be that the whole plant will die due to lack of energy.

@Hector123000 Yes, indeed. All the green plants do photosynthesis - that's why they are green after all. Venus fly traps do it as well - with the caught insects they just have an additional way to gain nutrients. This gives them an advantage as they live on very nutrient-poor bog soil.

@TheDietwawa Hi, you're right that those are really cool plants. However, if you don't want to damage them, you shouldn't do the stick thing... Each time a leaf closes it costs the plant a lot of energy, and if it can't eat an insect afterwards, it will be weakened unnecessarily.

@I3uRgAlIcIoUs imagine the plant as a mouth, wich it loooks like. similar or the same acids in our saliva are found in the fly trap. so the bugs die from being broken down by the saliva acids and the fact that they die from dehydrated or lack of food

what they do is close their mouths and once the plant closes completely then it puts juices inside so that the bug decomposes. After that the nutrients in the bug are turned to energy to use for the plant, which is the bugs soft body parts. The only thing left usually is the skeleton.

@I3uRgAlIcIoUs The brisltes on the inside of the leaf. Not the ones that are green, but the tiny red ones, have nerve receptors to tells the small mucels to close. When the prey has been caught, the plant leaks a acid that breaks down the prey from the inside. And the plant absorbs all the nutrients and usally leaves a skeleton of its pray behind.

@I3uRgAlIcIoUs there are tiny sensitive hairs inside of a fly traps mouth and when a small living object touches it, the bug/animal gets locked inside. It gets killed because the venus fly trap sucks all nutrients and stuff from the animal through its hairs.

@I3uRgAlIcIoUs That is a good question. First when the trap closes, the inside start to produce enzhymes wich slowly breqaks down it's prey. Then it ''sucks'' it all up as nutrition. There are probably more advanced explenations around but that is the short and easy version.
