Actually, no. They stated that very clearly. Richard was imortal. The island "wouldn´t let him die". You know, like with Michael, or any of the candidates really. It was a pretty centric plot-device.

That´s why smokey was unable to kill the candidates and had to trick them into killing themselfs, remember?

@aguyyaknow no, the MiB was unable to kill the candidates because of Jacob's rules, not the island itself. and Michael was killed by Keamy, they can't kill themselves, someone who is not stricken by the rules themselves (I.E, Ben) can kill them.

The Island has nothing to do with it, all of them couldn't kill themselves because they were candidates, only others who are not stricken with the rules can kill them, they can also kill each other. Sawyer made the bomb go faster and that's what killed Sayid,Sun and Jin. Only Candidates and those who are not bound by rules can kill candidates

Did a little more looking, Diphosgene (Trichloromethyl chloroformate) would fit the bill for the gas, except that it takes 2-24 hours to kill someone after they are exposed. It is a nasty gas, coverts to Hydrochloric acid in the lungs and causes the lungs to fill with blood. though coughing up blood is more common then nosebleeds when exposed to the gas.

The gas is not mustard gas, as mustard gas or a nerve gas, as mustard gas will burn the skin as well, and nerve gas is adsorbed though the skin. and Ben, richard, and the others all just had gas masks. This agent is much more like say, Phosgene which can cause nosebleeds and death, however Phosgene does not kill as quickly as the gas used.

He was handed to the others by kate and sawyer, after they fixed him he went back and grew up with Dharma. Richard told him he would have to be patient - as in until your way older patient, he was, and on this day the others purged the dharma and Ben returned to them.

i think the gas used in this has the same effect as the time travel "jet lag" syndrom that charolett died from. all of the symptoms are the same, such as nose bleeds, hemorage, and wierd uncontrolled spasms

I kind of agree. I think Jacob will be that "iconical enemy" who doesnt show his face until the end. It's done a lot in movies and even video games. You think you know who the main bad guy is, then you find out he is a puppet to an even bigger bad guy. Jacob pulls everyones strings. He shows them signs of being special and makes them do things that are supposivly good, but no happiness has come to any of them. The ultamite bad guy. JACOB!
