  • woohhooo go shore

  • it is great to see rugby played to a good standard at the higher levels and it is promising for American rugby altogether as their domestic leagues need development both it its structure for improving clubs and developing commercially to attract the American public

  • Ok well for all of you shit talking euro's and aussies the US has had SL rugby for less than 50 years. Give us a century and a half and we would kick your ass. How about we have our pro bowl team play and EFL all star team. That would be hilarious.

  • These teams wouldnt even beat my local English amatuer side. And their sposed to be shit. My team is looking to tour California soon, were gna have some easy games haha.

  • As an american who has played in the USA SL and overseas, SL is pretty shit. There are some good players but most are from rugby countries. If USA rugby ever wants to be good, get the DI football players that dont make the NFL

  • yeah man that would be awesome to get those players who dont make NFL i rekon USA could have a good team in rugby if they invest time and money into it.....have you ever played in New Zealand thats were im from :P

  • @AaronC183 i live in northern chicago we have the griffins and the lions the reason why people dont know who these teams are is because the cubs, sox, bears, and blackhawks have ben around for a 100 years or more. its going to take time and money. i say we put posters around the city to promote

  • That is because you are pussies! what team do you play for! Brighton boy??? you kidding me? you cant play league down south you guys are awful, i replied to a comment on another of your videos, i bet most if not all amateur sides in my hometown of Wigan will beat your team, now tour to a country where rugby is a top sport! Instead of trying to pretend like you guys are actually good.

  • @TheBrightonboy i hope you get smashed you smug bastard

  • thanks for not dissing USA, most people say we're all a bunch of idiots and that we'd never do any good at rugby. Rugby is slowly leaking into American culture, I plan on playing this year ( High school freshman) It looks more interesting than Grid iron football.

  • Ok, so is this a rugby league final, or a rugby union final? It looks like union, but it says league.

  • yeah i thought it was league, seeing rugby league in the USA would be beautiful.

  • You can't be serious!! Rugby league is a blasphemous sport!! Its a sacrilegious confusion of proper rugby.

Having said that, I would expect League to catch on in the US more easily than Union as it's almost as 1 dimensional as American Football.

  • The American Rugby League has been around since 98 I believe. There are some top quality players. The Tomahawks once came close to winning over Australia in 2004 and we just gave a beating to Jamaica. I specifically play union and 7's, but league is definitely a lot more exciting than this.

  • @mjribes No its rugby.... So its union because it says rugby... and than there playing in the "super league"

  • that no 8 with the ponytail for belmont shore looks pretty handy

  • Yup, best game in the world. Started at 5 and will finish when I can't run anymore! The game will only be truly global when the Yanks invest more money into their game... They will be unstoppable. Also: is it true that the Chinese Army have adopted rugby as their main sport?

  • if the americans start taking rugby seriously we're all in trouble! As much as I love league it will probably never be as popular as union- you just have too look at the rl world cup and see how many times australia have won it! but its definitely makes a sport more exciting the more countries that can compete on the same level!

  • my man you got it backwards rugby union is the working class version. It just became professional approx. 9 years ago I think but your right about the last part of the comment league is vicious

  • not in england it aint we up north which is mainly working class we play rugby league unless you was a public schoolboy which would mean your middle or upper class.down south the play rugby union wer the majority of the toffs are

  • my man you got it backwards rugby union just became profesional around 8 or so years ago its just more commercial then league but u are right about the last part of that league is no joke

  • rugby union is tradionaly played in southern england by the upper classes.up north where most of the working classes are we play rugby league the mans version union is good but its the pussys version of the game

  • hey fuck off man ..at the top level union is every bit as tough as league, if not more

  • people can comment on the quality of usa rugby all they want but its a relitivly new sport in the usa still and is just picking up. all true rugby lovers will be glad to see rugby becoming more poplar is such a leading country and i cant wait till they get really good and produce quality players, i myself am going over to the usa next year to help promote rugby and coach so hopefully i will have a positive impact on the game over there:)

  • i completely agree with you mate, its good to see rugby league growing around the world. I believe it is one of the greatest sports in the world and has a lot of room for growth.

  • yea totally any european who helps train or coach a team will definetly have an impact on the game =]

  • @tktank06 thank you i think its wrong that pro rugby players are playing at an empty field. this is my first year playing and i will have the time of my life

  • man thought it was rugby league its rugby union..i dont mind it but prefer league.this is the softer version that gets played down south.

  • rugby league is shit and union is not softer than league

  • cant understand how americans prefer footbal, when its so gay

  • rugby sucks in the usa the llanelli scarlets would smash both of these teams any day. rugby and cricket are the only sports usa are not good at.

Good at football better tha wales

  • unfortunately tho the scarlets would get thumped by most top european teams now, its a shame because i think stephen jones isa great player.

  • come to england u yanks

  • im a taff you twat

  • So you're saying a professional side from a top 5 rugby nation would beat two amateur teams from a second tier rugby nation? Profound.

  • Good to see club rugby in the U.S. look pretty good. Bloomfield looks like a freakin' monster.

Supposedly, USA v. Canada will be on ESPN on independence day. Can't wait.

  • You guys r pretty good.....good games as well went over extra time...,Great job ...All the best for the 2009 season.

    Much Love from NZ

  • I never knew the atheltic club had a rugby team im gonna look into it when I head up there.

  • this is good quality footy

  • Is this professional?

  • This is our semipro league. Sadly, almost no one knows about it.

  • no chance its wank

  • Nah it wasn't too bad, kinda looked like the lower end of the NSW club level sort of skill.

  • Lol no offense to Americans but you guys can't play for shit lol an this is union and league

  • idk we're not that bad, atleast have some basic skills

  • Super league is the name of the top division of rugby union in the US

  • if some of the USA talented players actually played union it would be half decent to watch.

  • I played in the Div. II national game and the super league game was awesome to watch under the lights...the semi-final match with the Glendale raptors was prob. the best game of the weekend with the half field kick for the wain at the end

  • its a shame the sport isnt as big as it is elsewhere

  • Rogers, Sailor and a couple of others went straight to the national side.

  • SBW - injured after 2 games and has yet to start for Toulon.

Gasnier - got injured in his 1st match and has been a bench player for Stade Francaise since.

Tahu - was shown up against the Bokkes, a player reknowned for his big hits on smaller opponents in League was a defensive liability in rugby.

The only player who crossed over recently and has made an impact is Ryan Cross.

so that brings the total number of successful converts to 3...Jason Robinson, Loti Tuqiri and Ryan Cross.

  • This game just proves how bloody boring rugby union is! League is far more entertaining than this! 10 mins of rugby league provides more action than 80 mins of Rugby Union, let alone sub standard union like this!

  • Tuqiri

  • yo're obviously an Aussie, you are the only one's who take League seriously.

  • All commonwealth nations take league pretty seriously.

Obviously alot more countries take union more seriously...

However its confusing that you call it American super league and its not league rules :|

  • North of England,Australia and PNG do represent the entire commonwealth.

Even Pacific island posters in a rugby forum confirm League is more or less non-existent in the island, 1 of the PI posters said there was only 450-500 registered players in Fiji, that is why their RLWC squad selected 5 local rugby players to beef up their league team.

  • Fair enough LeftyKing for spotting out regions that do enjoy rugby league greatly. But to then proceed further with a bunch of literal garbage about league's 'non-existance' in pacific islands is insulting.

  • Australia is the only country that takes League seriously.lol

  • OMBAC!!!

  • Rugby used to be a great game but in the last decade its been ruined. Mostly by professionalism. Its become so unstructured and turned into such a messy game. League is so much better now, they put rules in place to stop it from changing. League is a lot more physical, great to watch.

  • LOL@mcowain

League is a simple sport for simple people...5 tackles and a kick, if you want to bore yourself to death, take up League. These League fans are so delusional they actually believe their sport is a lot more physical rugby. League has no competitive scrums, no competition at breakdowns, no scavengers, no continuity, no lienouts and no mauls..all they do is 5 tackles and kick.LMAO!

  • coming from a family with rich invovment in professional union and league, and having played both myself, anyone who has will tell you league is far more demanding on the body with more structure. Union used to be great, but the new rules have made it a scrappy game, cant even ruck anymore. And half of them are wearing bloody head gear.

  • believe what you like mate, League is a dying sport. The only one's who think league is more physical are league fans, I've also played both codes in school and amateur club level. If you're a prop like myself, rugby union is hell. If you're not fit or do not know how to scrum down, I suggest not playing at all or you'll get seriously injured.

  • haha you suggest that do ya mate? I think you should wait until your old enough to comment before you argue.

  • cheers mate, I suggest you stop making false claims about a dying sport.

RUGBY = COMPETITIVE SCRUMS, RUCKS/MAULS, SCAVENGERS, CONTINUITY, COMPETITION AT BREAKDOWNS, LINEOUTS and LIMITED SUBS

LEAGUE = 5 tackles + kick with unlimited subs (allowed 12 subs during a game) what a bunch of unfit poofs, try 80mins of what I listed above, then come back and try to preach your BS.

  • yes league players are poofs.... what a clever comment. You sound like a 'fan' rather than a player. I suggest when you grow up you leave Brittan and come look into the NRL.

I wasnt putting down union, love the game, i was trying to point out that the rules that have changed over the last decade or two have changed it for the worst. Still better than soccer though haha!

Anyways, Arguing on the internet is a bit stupid so i will leave it at that.

  • Who cares about how touch the game is on the body? As a fan I care about the entertainment value. Personally, I don't find 15 rucks totalling a 5m gain as entertainment. Similarly, I don't find kicking the ball out on the full as something to cheer over, as most Union crowds do.

I find League a much more open game to watch, with a lot more skillful backs and more interesting backline tries rather then 5m attacking scrums where the fowards just push over...how is that interesting?

  • more skillful backs? HAHAHAHAHA...NRL backs would get murdered in rugby...that is why more or less every NRL star League back that converts to rugby struggles...did you see Tahu playing against the Bokkes? what a joke, do they teach league players how to tackle? Tuqiri was a shithouse when he 1st converted, he was too thin and slow, he bulked up improved his defence and now he's coping. Vainikolo, Farell, Matt Rogers, Sailor, Walker etc all struggled.

  • And this is why they all make the Wallabies squad within a year of converting? To be honest mate, I see Lockyer, Thurston as far better players then Gitteau and Barnes. Same goes for Inglis, Falou, Gasnier etc etc...Mortlock is the only one who would compete against those guys imo

League forwards wouldn't make Union level because it is a completely different game in the forwards. I think the fact that every league convert is a Wallaby within 12 months of swapping codes back me up on this...

  • I agree Lockyer is good, but, he's only better then the centers in Australia, against the Bokkes and ABs backline, it's a different story..Inglis, Falou? let them switch to rugby an we'll find out...lol.. we'll find out how Gasnier will cope when he moves to Stade Francaise later...SBW has already injured himself after playing less then 60mins of rugger in 2 games...Vainokolo is struggling and the rest like Tahu and Cross can't tackle.

  • I noticed how obese Matt Dunning was in the paper a few days ago, is this what you mean by 'bulking up' or 'coping'?

    You are a lunetic.

  • @Kingsland7

LMAO! Dunning? is that the best you could do? Dunning (aka PIE ETER or CUP CAKES) has been the laughing stock of the rugby world for the past 4-5 years. Apart from Australian S14 clubs and the Wallabies management, the rest of the rugby world is surprised he made so far up in pro-rugger.

  • NRL boring sorry, tactically inferior, actually there are'nt tactics. They have really skillful backs with great handling, passing skills, but they're wasted in league.

  • How can you say it's tactically inferior? Kicking for field position in union is a good play because it is harder to make safe metres with the ball. The defense line is in your face each phase so the safest way to get the ball down the other end is by kicking. Kicking for field position in league would be stupid because you can make the metres fairly safely with the ball and then put in an attacking kick. They are 2 different games with 2 different sets of 'tactics'.

  • simply because there is more options in the Union game, particularly in the areas of restarting the game. Unions greatest advantage is having the ruck as a means of recycling the ball without everyone stopping as in league and i having a proper scrum is a good spectacle.I must agree with you that the negative aspect of the game is too much kicking.Sorry I feel NRL is much like football, maybe has some style but no substance,a game for those with a short attention span.

  • how is it inferior?

    5 TACKLES + KICK

  • P.s. Yes league have backs with better passing/handling skills, but they also have much more room to work in then union backlines. So those skills are alot more important in league. In a union backline, size is alot more important. That is why you see better 'playmakers' in league (Darren Lockyer, Andrew Johns), and bigger blokes able to break tackles in union (Mortlock, Lomu etc.)

Sure size helps in any football code, but you see alot more small fast guys running around on a league field.

  • mate, you probably havn't seen the likes of Dan Carter, Wilko, Cipriani, Michalak etc...PLEASE do not try to compare players when you know absolutely fck-all about rugby union players...Lomu? CHRIST! his been retired for ages.lol

  • Alright mate, when I see Carter do something spectacular that doesn't involve kicking for goal then I will agree with you. But until then I stand by what I said.

Lomu was an example that size and tackle-breaking ability is a bigger asset in Union. What does it matter if he is retired?

And to your 5 tackles + kick statement, that is why it is more interesting, because you only get 5 tackles to attack with, rather then 20 phases making 10 metres...so you need to make the most of each play.

  • Anyways, I think we have argued on here enough lol, i'm sure union have some great backs as well, but I don't watch enough of it to see them. I really only watch Test Rugby. I am sure Dan Carter etc do great things in the context of a union game but I just don't see them as great because I have a league mindset. =\

Anyways mate enjoy your footy, and thanks for replying...;)

  • LMAO! you keep talking up League backs when most of your star backline players have struggled in rugby...it's a shame that these "skillful" league backs can't hack it in rugby...they are weak tacklers, they have no imagination with the ball and they are too small..talk up league all you like, fact is your boys can't hack it in rugby.

  • 'no imagination with the ball'...lol alright mate whatever you say. Why would league players need to bulk up? Their game plan isn't based around passing the ball to a 130kg winger and watching him try to run over the top of someone. 10 subs in league? you get 4 subs 10 interchanges max in a game including injured players.

Skillful backs is all about size according to you by the sounds of it, and 'no imagination' shows you haven't watched many league games.

  • I agree, league has skillful backs, but, more or less all star League converts have struggled in Rugby...that about sums it up really...only 2 have succeeded, Jaosn Robinson and Loti Tuquiri

  • I guess it depends on what you class as succeeding. I would call getting named in your national team as a success.

  • dude, only Robinson and Tiqiri (spell?) imo have made starting teams in both club and test level since they converted. This may not be a big deal in League because you have 10 sus, in union only the best players start, so if you're constantly being named in the starting XV, you're good. Apart from these 2, most League converts are bench warmers, some switch back to League.

  • Obviously most Union coaches and clubs disagree with you on that one, or they wouldn't still be trying to poach so many high class League backs.

Some converts you forgot to mention include Wendell Sailor, Ryan Cross, Matt Rogers, Brian Carney (Ireland), Mark Gasnier, even Berrick Barnes played in the NRL for the broncos.

Of those, Sailor, Rogers and Barnes all had starting positions for the Wallabies while they played Union. SBW is being tipped to play All-Blacks by some union personalities.

  • mate, the only union coaches trying to "poach" league backs are in Australia. When Farell switched to Saracens only 1 club wanted to grab him, Shaun Edwards a former league man himself and now Wasps coach thought it was a bad idea, he even went as far as saying Farell would struggle...and he did.

  • Rugby Union: A mug's game played by gentlemen.

Rugby League: A gentlemen's game played by mugs.

  • I think the quote is "thugs" not "mugs"

  • Yanks should get into Rugby League - none of this Rugby Union garbage! ;-)

  • Americans do play league. A couple of years ago the U. S. national team ( the Tomahawks ) played a full strength Kangaroos and nearly won. I assumed it was going to be a slaughter. I was watching with my jaw on the ground not believing how well they were playing. Before i saw that game i didn't even know the U.S. had a national team.

  • yea i heard about that game! i try very hard to follow the usa rugby league team as much as i can but it is hard since they are very unpopular. i would love to have some video of that game vs. the kangaroos of australia but i cant find anything on it and i did a lot of searching but still nothing. if u can find and video of the usa tomahawks anywhere i would appreciate it a lot! i love rugby league and rugby union just as much. there both great!

  • Sorry mate, i can't find that game either. If i do i will send it to you. I will be watching the Tomahawks ( if they're playing i don't know ) at the league world cup with great interest. If they play as well as i've seen them, i think there will be a lot of very suprised Aussies, Kiwis and Poms. All the best. Go the Melbourne Storm.

  • I watched that game Live and enjoyed it, cheering the yanks on during the first half... but really it was a bit of a farce. PLaying on a Gridiron field was pathetic. Lockyer started drilling the kickoffs into touch giving Australia the ball back.

The Aussies thought it was a big joke. Graham Annesley organised it, pretty poor effort. They should have played on a soccer field and treated it much more seriously.

  • No doubt the Aussies thought it was a joke and yeah, it could have been much better organised, but fuck me, the Yanks didn't treat it like a joke. I know now they won't be playing at the league world cup which is a bit of a shame because they played their hearts out and gave the Aussies a real scare.

  • TDxALABAMA. Good news. Footage of that game has appeared on youtube. I forget the exact title now but i,m sure searching 'Australia vs America league' should find it. I will leave it in my favourites for a few days for your easy viewing.

  • i know! i was excited to see that! i was one of the very first to see the video. i believe i left comments on it a while ago also.

  • Number 2 for NYAC, good player, not very good looking though... 13 on the other hand, some people get all the luck!!!

  • wow what a great game! who is the red number 2 he looks awesome?
