I have this dash and it is BROKEN! In my lebaron, there is ghosting all over the place. Speedo lights up random spots on the display. I could be going 8 MPH and it will say I am going 288 MPH. But if the oil pressure goes up 1 bar, it'll say 298 MPH. It is INFURIATING. Do you know anyone who fixes these things or supplies parts?
The Digital-Space Age-Disposable 80's and 90's shit is going to be the next big thing. Cash for Clunkers has already cleared out 1/2 the supply of these cars, in a couple of years-people will lust for this akward generation of cars again.
I've sold some of my classics to upkeep a collection of random 80's GM products. Reminds me of being a kid.
sweet, love the digital dashes, looks like knight rider!!!! :) KR was one of my favorite shows from childhood. I hate how in KR08, they had analog instruments. Oh sure, they had digital displays in the windshield, but modifying the car physically to give it a different dash would have been way cooler. plus they should have modified the front end of the stang to make it look more aerodynamic, like the 2000 model year. :)
@neutrino78x I actually purchased a 1985 Chrysler Laser XT 3 weeks ago and it came with perhaps the closest setup to the knight rider ever from the factory. I'll record a nice video and post it up in a few days. Digital dash, digital traveler, digital systems information screen. And it monitors EVERYTHING! Brake wear, coolant level, windshield washer fluid level, brake fluid level, oil pressure, fuel level, engine temperature, doors, hatch, seat belt, keys in ignition, headlamps on, etc, etc.
@zoskalon awesome, I would like to watch that! :) You would think electric cars and hybrids would all have cool dashboards like this one, but unfortunately they don't :-( For example, the Tesla Roadster has an analog speedometer. :-( digital looks way more advanced and futuristic to my eye :-)
Now that's what a dash should nay must look like instead of all those idiot lights.
Hell all you get now is speedo, tach , fuel and temp . Some even have green leaves to look at . Some have a tach, speedo and a gas gauge!!! Now that's chintzy .
@Jim4575 Thanks man! I'm working on an information center that will display exact values for the fuel level, oil pressure, engine temperature, and volts.
@zoskalon Your welcome. Your dash is going to be awesome when your done. You should work in the auto industry , at least someone would like to see all the gauges.
@Jim4575 Well, it is one of my aspirations as a computer engineer. Once I have my information center complete, I will design drop in digital gauges for the 1990+ Daytona and Lebaron instrument clusters. I want it to be a side project and maybe hopefully I can expand beyond that. I'm also going to build my own ECU from scratch and maybe after a few years I can perfect it and sell a nice standalone engine management system for anyone. Gotta start small...
@zoskalon Sounds like you have a good start. Starting small is a good idea, perhaps in the future you'll have a bigger company with some big name companies looking for your instrument clusters. I think it has a very good chance of success. All the best in the future. !!!
Thanks! The temp gauge is displaying giberish because I do not have the proper body control module installed. My friend might be selling me one though, so hopefully it'll be all good after that.
this dash is cool and all But I like the dash in the Daytona Shelby Z better it looks more futuristic to me. I think the 80's LeBarons had the same dash as the Shelby.
I actually modified an 80s digital dash to fit into the newer (1990+) style interior. I drove with that dash in my other Daytona for a while, but I decided to swap back to my analog gauges because I find it very important to watch my oil pressure and water temp gauges. I glance at them about every minute or so. But with the 80s digital dash, you have to push a button to cycle through the volt/oil/temp gauges. And I was basically driving with my finger on the button.
Analogs ARE technically more accurate when compared to a bargraph style digital cluster. However, I am going to make a separate gauge that displays my fuel level as a percentage from 0-100. I like driving till I'm almost bone dry, lol. Also, it'll help me measure my fuel economy.
It shows "188" during the initial "bulb test" where it turns on every single light. The first digit is 2 segments and the second and third digits are 7 segments each, and when they're all lit up, it display 188.
If yours ALWAYS is on 188, that means that something is wrong, most probably a short circuit somewhere. Would be hard to pin point and repair.
those 88 gta dashes he is referring to uses an LCD unlike our cars use a vacuum florescent tube display. his LCD has likely "bled" from sitting in the sun ( after 21 years!) and needs a new lcd. basically needs his cluster rebuilt! beautiful dash by the way. if i ever find myself a 90, its gonna be the very first mod! ( i have 5 of them just sitting here.)
The temp gauge is not working on this car. At least not for the digital dash. The temp feed to my body control module must be shorted out since no matter how cold or warm the engine is, it displays the same value.
I own 3 Daytonas including a 1993 IROC R/T with a 2.2L turbo pushing about 250HP. Never once have I had an overheating issue with any of them and all 3 heads are, believe it or not, NOT CRACKED including my R/T head which is the ORIGINAL LOTUS HEAD. Yes, Dodge had an issue with almost all of the R/T heads cracking, but the SOHC 2.2 and 2.5L heads were solid. Take your opinionated bullshit to a honduh video.
2.2l and the 2.5l were the 2nd most reliable dodge engine! I had a 2.5l With the turbo I High-Torque (152hp/210lbs insted of 150hp/180lbs) ran 15.7 stock but with 1k o f mods i had it at 14.4. Never had NO problem with the engine. And people give Mopar trans shit because they cant hold power. I had 180k on the original trans and clutch!
The years it came in was 91-93. I thought i had a 90, but it was a 91 Lebaron. I know they didnt come in the dusters/Shadow ES. I'm not sure about the daytona's tho.
ah, i wasn't aware that the hp-rating would give away the HT engines. need to check what it says on mine, i'm pretty sure it's 150 though.
is there any option code on the body plate for the HT?
i'm running 11 psi with a Garrett on my otherwise stock 92, and this thing is (or feels at least) pretty damn fast ;) i'll be hooking up a TII style IC and do a full exhaust and crank some more boost up. i might add d-cal later down the road, although i'm not sure on how to modify the SBEC-II ecu.
Actually, the exhaust system on that car is stock for the time being. The reason why that car has a gorgeous low grunt, is actually not coming out of the exhaust but from the throttle body. I have the air filter and air filter box completely off the car. I don't drive the car at all, I'm restoring it, so no really fear of anything falling into the intake and either way, I'm installing a 1995 2.4L DOHC stratus engine.
im just wondering...why the 2.4? What engine do you currently have in it? a 2,5l T, or a the 3.0 V6. I would understand the swap if it was the v6. But the 2.2/2.5l responds to mods pretty well and would be cheaper to build then an engine swap that wasnt put in these cars. But just my opinion. Just keep doing what you do that makes you happy! and i liked the vid!
I currently have the N/A 2.5L engine. It runs like a champ. I pulled the entire interior on it, just left the driver's seat and dash and drove to my brother's shop to work on. I was hauling ass compared to my other N/A Daytona. The reason I'm swapping to the DOHC 2.4L engine, is because chrysler did NOT design a whole new 4 cylinder engine to use in their newer cars, they just used the ol'reliable 2.2/2.5 common block design and just refined it.
There are a lot of people who are swapping the DOHC head ONTO the old 2.2/2.5 blocks! They are a near perfect match. You just have to run external oil lines from the head to the block. The engine mounts and trans mounts are all the same from the early 1980s all the way through about 2005. That engine will swap right into my Daytona with a few minor tweaks. The reason for that is that the DOHC head allows for much more power, much more easily. I'm aiming towards a "conservative" 350HP.
Everything's possible. How hard would it be? Only you can find out. If you can locate the chime on the digital dash, take it out and solder on the chevy one, I'm sure it'll work. Not really sure what the "scary" chime is...
Would a 1990 digi dash work in a 1993 daytona I've got one hooked up in my Daytona but the fuel gauge pegs out and the oil and temp read 3/4ths with engine cold, no battery signal or reading and no tach signal, on the plus side there is a steady chime that comes on when you turn the key and will not go away unless you unplug the dash and turn the key.
that is awesome i have an 89 daytona and i love the digi guages for my year i know where a lebaron is sittin with the digi guages would it be possible to hook up those to my standard set up
If the gauges are 89 or below (the rectangular cluster) then it'll hook up not only with no problems, but its super easy and like an hour job. All you have to do is grab the cluster from the yard and make SURE you cut the plugs off with like 6" of wire. Not sure if you can just plug in your old plugs from your analog dash, but if not, you just snip your plugs off and color match the digital dash plugs, and you're good to go! Well, there might be a few wires that don't match up...
Nice vid. Do you know if a swap can be done from a standard dash and a digi ? my '91 dash is getting old, I think the electrical motor for my RPM needle is dead and I may replace the dash for a digi
That's what I did. Not a single Daytona came with a digital dash from 1990 to 1993, but some lebarons did, and luckily they have the same interior :D
All you have to do, is cut the plugs from your old dash out and solder the wires colorwise to the digital dash plugs.
For your 1991 Daytona, you would NEED to use a 1990 or a 1991 digital dash. A digital dash from a 1992-1995 lebaron WILL NOT WORK in a 1990 or 1991 car!
I would recommend you just go to a junkyard and take out just the RPM motor and swap it into your dash so that you can keep your current milage. Its very easy to do, and chances of finding another digital dash are very slim.
I did however mount an 80s digital dash out of a dodge charger into my 1992 Daytona. Those dashes are fairly common, and if you have some fabricating skills, you can do this yourself in a weekend. If you're interested, I'll give you the link to my thread about it.

I did however mount an 80s digital dash out of a dodge charger into my 1992 Daytona. Those dashes are fairly common, and if you have some fabricating skills, you can do this yourself in a weekend. If you're interested, I'll give you the link to my thread about it.
