  • 5:29 was so cool!

  • One vocalist I really, really appreciate is Joe Strummer from the Clash, but on their first album, the self-titled. I highly suggest listening to it. It was total distorted vocals, but still in tune.

  • Everybody, take a look at "invictamusic", that could be really helpfull if u wanna' learn the fry technique ! No, it's not my page, i just stumbled upon it, and it might be helpfull 2 u ! :)

  • plz do a cover of enter sandman or any metallica song. it include alot of this techique

  • why do people find this so hard? i've been able to do this all my life and i have a very clean speaking voice.

  • Any answer would really help me to this guys(liked vid and subscribed):

    1. One guy told me to control my rasp .. What did he mean with that?

    2. Will my rasp change(I'm 16) cuz it sounds kinda squeezy now - it is rasping but not as good :D

And second of all , should I do exercises for strengh and flexibility? So I can rasp for longer and my voice won't start """"hurting"""" THAT fast if I dont warm up?

  • is fry vocal anyhow connected to rasp?

  • Can anyone answer me? When I sing rasp, it doesn't hurt but next day it does effect that I can't sing as long as I did the day previous. Does that mean I'm singing wrong? It feels like having a sorethroat but it only happens if I sing like that 2 days in a row(anyways, first day is the longest - then it's like lowered)

  • @FatGnomeTribute

You may be doing something harmful if you are experiencing ANY negative effects from using rasp. I'm not a voice teacher, so although I give tips from my own experience, they may not work for you, or if they do, not in the same way.

Any negative effects? Please seek a voice teacher to help you do this in a healthy way for you.

  • @cogCode Well as far as I heard if it hurts when u sing(the moment u're singing) u should stop singing but that's not the case at me. And also I heard(dont know if its true) if u sing with rasp more often ur throat will get use to it more and u'll be able to sing with rasp longer.

  • @cogCode I think if he's just starting out, it's hard for him to do it the next day because the muscles in his throat aren't strong enough or used to it yet.

It's just like working out any other muscle.

  • @FatGnomeTribute

There are two types of people in the world. Those who can do this and those who can't. It comes down to breathing. Take a breath then pass as little air over your throat as possible through your diaphram and you will rasp.

  • its also called a vocal fry or a hoarse voice

  • Joan Rivers and Eliza Dushku are good examples of a raspy voice

  • thats more of a crunch than a rasp rod stewart has a rasp

  • Is this the technique that Nickelback uses?

  • @BarneyIsPerverted dude nickelback fucking sucks. this guy is teaching you how to sing with some rasp. not sound like you have bronchitis like chad kroeger.

  • Dude you're the fucking man! I did this and no pain when doing this and great control! Amazing! I don't agree with RocktheStageNYC about having a "natural rasp" in their voice, I don't have a natural rasp in my voice at all, but generate it like most singers do in this style. I have been sining Alice in Chain Man In the Box and Would and ripping it!!!

  • haha 2:32 :D .. by the way you have a really good voice !

  • ffs all videos till now i hear only talking .do the fkin rasp adn then speak!!!!

  • oh wait never mind my comment from before.

  • I got a problem with getting rasp from beginning to end of the note. It seemed like you seemed to add the rasp at the end of clean notes as you explained, I didn't really hear any throughout the notes. It's well hard especially on high notes, I can do it, but I'm still not satisfied with the sound.

  • Being honest you should call this video "if you think about singing you wont be able to sing with practising " and thats true! even you know that cog CODE ;)

  • I wonder about david coverdale. he doesn't have a naturally raspy voice, but, well I'm sure you've heard Whitesnake. My voice, in terms of vocal range and normal speech, is very similar to his, so I'm wondering how to get that soft rasp like he does.

  • @simplegr33n420

Coverdale's is definitely an acquired technique, he had a much clearer voice before he got a throat surgery back in 1985. Since the 1987 album his rasp technique got so much more aggresive. I wouldn't say Coverdale's rasp is soft, though.

I'm a pretty clear speaker myself and am baritone too but can use rasp on will (at least most of the time). Rasping mixed voice very easy for me but in chest voice it's a bit harder, if that helps.

  • I've recently figured out this way to sing too and I love it. I'm the same as u I guess cus I can do it for days on end and be fine. There is a raspiness when I talk now and my voice is deeper but I think it sounds cool lol. Is it louder for u when u do these vox compared to clean?

  • You should change the name of this video to

    "dirtying up the tail end"

    Ha ha ha ha!

  • this man is an amazing singer!!! and thanks for the placing the video up. i've been REALLY wanting to sing like james hetfield of metallica but have been having trouble adding the rasp into my voice so THANKS, man

  • thanx for the distortion thing. I was goin at it all wrong before. I was tryin to take vocal fry higher but it was unpredictable.

Vocal fry made a `second voice` higher. This makes the `second voice` lower. Its pretty cool.

Its like yoda and bounce it back to your normal voice. I dipped from ian asbury, yoda, from normal and it made me lower my note. Then i tried to dipp from normal to growl, almost a clearing of throat but not. Then i dipped less and less till it was the same note. goodluck

  • Your rasp voice comes from your natural speaking voice. Your speaking voice has a natural growl to it so it s FAR easier for you to add rasp than someone who has a clear speaking voice like I do.

Someone like Lemmy from Motorhead cannot sing clean. Why because his voice is naturally raspy - as your is. Wish I had that.

  • You raise a fair point, and one that I will think about.

In my youth, I never had a rasp to my speaking voice. But I wonder which came first, the chicken or the egg? Did I get a rasp to my speaking voice from acquiring the ability to do raspy singing, or was it the other way around?

On a related note, I've seen some of your instructional vids and enjoyed them. I would recommend them to other singers, especially since you are a voice teacher, and I am certainly not. lol

  • I didn't want to come across critical - its just that most people don't have that kind of natural rasp in their voice like you. So getting that "raspiness" may not be as easy for 99% of people like it is for you.

I just wanted others who view this video to understand that before they start trying "rasp" on their own voices.

  • No, you've raised some good points here.

On a related note, anyone reading this should check out RocktheStageNYC videos here on YouTube. Some very informative stuff from a real voice teacher. lol

  • @RocktheStageNYC

A la the Zen of screaming I learned to add rasp when I have a VERY clean singing voice otherwise. It's all about the resonance like he said, and at the same time a little work, it takes legitimate technique... and a ridiculous amount of trial and error.

  • @Gemquist

Haha. But who am I to speak on the subject in comparison?

  • @RocktheStageNYC : bon scott had clear speaking voice but when he sang it was real gritty. listen to him in an interview and his voice is very soft, but then in highway to hell its real gutteral and raspy

  • @TanukiGrana - Ever heard Bon Scott laugh? there was a rasp in his voice when he laughed. Blackie Lawless of WASP has a clear speaking voice too and he can really scream. Some people have the ability to just "do it" without thinking. Yet I've yet to meet anyone who can just "do it" who can tell me exactly how they do it. Its a quirk of their voice. Its like those people that can raise just one eyebrow like Mr. Spock. Most people can't but some can.

  • How do you add "rasp" to sustained notes? I want to know how to sing with rasp like David Draiman from Disturbed. Listen to the song "Facade" as an example, cogCode. I am a screamer already so I want this raspy middle ground between clean notes and hardcore screams. Can you help me out here? Thanks...

  • I sing in a band and a couldnt reach the high notes without it soundiing like **** but sinnging with rasp helps...thanks for the tips!

  • THANK YOU! i searched for that kind of singing but all i could was scream and growl. now I will know, that it calls Grasp. You helped me a lot :)

  • your raspy voice is impressive. i like it in your "another thing coming" video, too. SOUNDS GOOD BRO *bowdown*
