i know it is not responsible at all, and i know jags are not the most reliable, yet fuel saving cars around, but when i get my license, i will buy an old Jag, there is no way around it, i am a petrol head and will not simply buy a stupid Volkswagen or Japanese lunchbox called Toyota. as a petrol head you will not go for something that just drives or brings you where you want. you will go for a real car, you will go for a Jaguar.
Oh that is one lovely car - it's so quiet we could hear you breathing!!!!!
I always wanted a Jaguar from the days I was at school. I used to see a red XJ12 going past in the mornings, I think it was JKB531L or 513L, in the 80's! I saw it 2 years ago in perfect condition and wanted to go after the driver and just admire the car. They really do look much better than modern Jaguars which just remind me of a Ford Mondeo with a body kit. These Jaguars are classic luxury cars.
@stumby12 . Used to frighten me when I lifted bonnet!!
The S class Merc I run now is same era (3 yrs newer) and its easy to work on. Very basic high quality engineering on the old Mercs. The Jags were far more technically advanced but a nightmare for DIY spannering
bought one of these once of the part ex lot for £300 , stuck 40 petrol in it drove it down the road , very nice smooth ride then it overheated as the water pump had self destructed managed to get it back to the dealers and get me cash back after a bitof an argument , looking back i wish id kept it and fixed it or stuck it in a garage and forgot about it for ten years , beautiful car love it :)
@7477238 . Like velvet. I bought a 500 SEL Merc after I sold this, and despite being almost twice the price when new, the Merc can't hold a candle to the Jag for ride quality . Reliabilty .........now there's a diff story, these old German things are built like tanks
you could get as much as a `bag of sand` off a brand new car when you trade in an old smoker like this with the governments scrappage scheme.Just imagine a nice shiny panda or them kias are quite nippy, there really is no reason anymore why someone should have to drive a rattly old banger ;-)
@kleinkeske . I think they were the best of the XJ6 shape too, and that shape ran from 1968 to 2009 in different guises but still essentiallly the same design criteria
Hi - wonderful car - she looks remarkably like my V12 - this isn't the former E444WTA ? I regret selling my beloved Jaguar - traded her for the latest Honda Prelude back in 1992 but went back to Jaguar V12 afterwards. Would love to know what became of my car. Andy
Unfortunately its sold now, replaced with a 500 SEL Mercedes W126.
A wonderful car in the German way but the ride quality of the Jag was better, in fact most of the technology on the Jag was years ahead, shame it was assembled by British Leyland!
Wood and chrome on the Jags is far better quality too, but that old German 5 litre V8 in the Merc is far less scary to maintain than the Jags V12 and its got a fair turn of pace when you sink the right foot!
Nice series 3. I like the colour, it's almost the same as my XJS. It's nice to see a good XJ12 around, and surprising to see that everything seems to still work, even the seatbelt warnings. I miss my last series 3 but it had to make way for the series 1 I bought... but now I think I'll have to get another!
Only had it 8 weeks before selling it. It was a good looking car, but wanted some jobs doing that were going to cost big money and the bodywork was at a point that needed some work too. Not bad for a 24 yr old car though. I've done the unthinkable now though and bought a big old W126 S-class Merc. Those 8 pot MB engines sound like a bag of spanners compared to the Jag V12 and the ride quality is not in the same league, but I love it just the same. Its even bigger too. 16ft, 11 inches long!!
It was still way better than mine! I managed to win a "shed of show " trophy ... I got rid of mine after a few months of enjoying fast motoring at 6mpg. (pre High Efficiency engine).
So thats why the XJ6 outsold EVERY USA made luxury car in the USA is it?
Check your facts gob-shite, you yanks couldn't get enough Jags , Astons, Mercs or any other European made luxury car because they were years ahead of the leaf -sprung ,OHV powered dog shit that you were making , and still are.
Go fuck yourself, buy a proper car and come back when you have.
You'll be an expert on shit, or shite won't you as your country has been spouting it for the last 200+ years and your car manufacturers have been making it for almost as long. .
You thick yank fuck-wits wouldn't know "class" if it slapped you across both of your fat chops.
You gave up any right to "class" when you argued about the price of tea all those years ago. Now go , fuck off and just for your own satistafaction and to help with your own insecurity, carry on telling the world how fucking good you are. What a bunch of pricks, east to west, top to bottom, what a bunch of brain-deads.
**heavy breathing*** I think that ***heavy breathing*** the old school jaguars are aesthetically more appealing than their newer models. ***heavy breathing*** I just had to make a crack of that creepy breathing.
Yes, America is clearly Jaguar's biggest market and they did not like the XJ40. The 300 series turned back toward the more rounded shape and has been much more successful.
Accidental post. I was going to say U are actually 60 years old and that's the best U can do ? I think it's time Americans got over their inferiority complex to the "Mother country" It's a bit like gays having parades to show how comfortable they are with their orientation. Seems to me if they were they wouldn't need the parades. Same applies to U guys. Ur shamles, endless self promotion betrays U. Keep up the "we're the greatest" crap. It's really Urselves U're trying to convince of course.
From two sentences you fabricated quite a lot of your "crap" didn't you? The "best I could do" in your Philosophy would be worst in mine. I could do it, but will leave that to you. Keep it up, and thank you for the chuckles and affirmation of my post.
My first two sentences echo the drone of many Americans, clown. U really that thick ? "affirmation of my post" I didn't affirm anything little man. My opinion is external to the argument. U went off half cocked. " I could do it " .. No U couldn't - U're a mutt. Any guy who is so small minded & twisted at 60 is. U're a guy with a chip on both shoulders. U mark down unrelated posts I made further illustrating Ur lack of character without the brains to realise it. Ytube sociopath.
And before you come on here critising things you know nothing about , cos from what I know quality cars and yanks go as well together as a bacon butt at a Bar Mitzvah (thats half of USA insulted), learn to spell you knob-head. Ruler just has the one "L". You race of wasters shouldn't even be allowed to use the same language (albeit a bastardised version) that the good people of England use.
LMAO - what an increrdible dumbass you are. I've seen some stupid kids here but you're a scream. Now get down to Burger King or you'll be late for work again.
Very nice indeed, we own an Xj6 Soveriegn '86 it is also it very good nic for her age. so many people put these cars down as being unreliable etc, but we are the third owners like yourself and have had her nearly 4 years and in that time all she has had is a coil, high tension leads, and a radiator hose!...We live in Australia and I have her serviced once a year for $330.00 she has done 198,000km orig everything, engine, transmission, diff, brakes etc all very good and "Bessie" starts everytime!
Yes -with hindsight, "end of"sounds very bullish. What I meant to say was that the XJ series wasn't especially modern when it was launched in '68 (apart from a lovely chassis) yet the Merc 126 was all new in '79 and updated again from '86 with the fabulous 300 and 560 blocks, the Merc cost a lot more too, and this shows. I dont rate new Mercs much- this one is the last one you can fix yourself- ABS and thats your lot! I dont know where German comes into it, a car's a car, for goodness sake.
There is an arrogance with a lot of Merc owners that I've met, so I judge as I see. Anyhow, let bygones be bygones. I'll now have my own opportunity to see if your comparison notes were right. I bought a 500 SEL last night! The seller was refreshingly honest and after searching from one end of the country for a car, I ended up buying one 10 mins from where I live. Collecting it at the weekend, so I'll get chance to sample the delights of the fabled W126 S-class.
"End of" sounds arrogant enough to me. It suggests , there will be no reasonable arguement listed to , or other peoples opinions will not be considered. That sounds like a very German way, too much like Hitler for my liking
That's o.K. because I'm not selling my merc. As I said, I own both, drive both and do all my own repairs. The Series 3 Daimler has 63,000 km and I've just spent 2000 euros on parts alone, My Merc 126 has 420,000 km, and a new water pump in 4 years are the only repairs apart from tyres and oil changes, and I've just been to Spain and back and averaged 30 mpg. Only going off my own experience. People who've never had these S classes on a daily basis will never understand how awesome they are.
Typical arrogance of a Merc owner. Thats why as yet I've not bought one because the cars I go to look at are usually vastly over described by their owners.
And the Jag will always win on one count. STYLE. Something the Germans know little or nothing about!
Excellent! I worked at Jaguar Whitley from 1997-2006. I have fond memories of an X300 V12 6 litre although I was involved in the V8 engine design more. One day I'll own a late nineties XJR
Fab car. I always wanted one but lacked the bottle to go all the way and buy one. My guess is that you are already sad you sold it. The 560 SELs are nice to look at but have a nasty rep for expensive trouble.
Thats the reason I sold it, it wanted some expensive stuff replacing.
I'd say its the other way round, the 560 SEL's don't match the Jag in looks, but are known for their build quality. Don't think the Jags could boast that. The years of BL strikes and industrial turmoil affected all the companies that were part of their empire.
The V12 is a fine fine engine when its running right, but as soon as it isn't ,its specialist people needed and big money is easily spent.
They are still stylish cars these & a masterpiece of an engine too.A little bit of info for the Jaguar & Daimler V12 owners, the engine there is the basis for the XJR-9LM & XJR-12LM sportscar racers of the late 80's & early 90's.
I've since sold the car. Don't like admitting it , but I'm looking for a 560 SEL Merc. Got a thing about big luxo barges at the moment. They have the edge on build quality but they don't drive as nicely as a series3 Jag or turn as many heads. Watch this space.......
The whole time I kept the car, I averaged 9.4 MPG and that was mixed, town and open road stuff. They are an absolute fuel guzzler but the sound of that V12 eases the pain a little!!
