I think the movie would have been better with more Asians in the cast...just because that's basically what they were in the TV show, with some Non-Asians sprinlked around. I am aware that avatar is based off of asian culture,yes. I also belive that this problem of racism is blown way out of proportion. the casting for this movie didnt have to be that difficult, just follow the show. firebenders are chinese or japanese (mix it up), airbenders and earthbenders are mostly white with some asian thrown in there, and waterbenders are eskimos. not that complicated.

I wacthed the whole series and it's awsome. Non of the characters in the series looked remotely Asian, so why would they put asians in the movie in the first place if the one's in the anime didn't look asian, it would kind of ruin the original setting of the movie, don't you think? Though it's true that the avatar world is based on asian culture, but none in the t.v series looked really asian, they all looked either white, mideastern, or Mixed.

Creating the concept of "White Washed" Asian characters or B.) Avatar the last air bender is a fictional oriental style Asian world. The creators themselves had done vast research to make sure it was. The martial arts for one is a major signifier. Along with the buildings, writing style, clothing, food and etc. They even drank tea (Orginated from China) and ate with chopsticks. It doesn't get clearer then that. Ignorance. This show was based of Asian culture. The movie was BASED on The series. What the fuck makes you think the movie would have been any better if Asians were cast? Does Aang look Asian? Does Katara or Sokka? Suki didn't even look Asian. Regardless of what you guys think, Anime doesn't automatically mean Asian. Zuko, Azula, Ozai, they resemble Asians. But Asians wouldn't have saved the movie. If it was 2h35m, better dialog and had more events from the first season, it would have been ok.

THe Middle East is a loosely defined region, but many of the areas that it ncompasses are by no means ASIA! Even though he isn't an "oriental" he considers himself of Asian descendent (he's of Indian descent of course and from London, England, so I guess in Great Britain they refer to Indians as Asians more often). the casting for this movie didnt have to be that difficult, just follow the show. firebenders are chinese or japanese (mix it up), airbenders and earthbenders are mostly white with some asian thrown in there, and waterbenders are eskimos. not that complicated.

I wacthed the whole series and it's awsome. Non of the characters in the series looked remotely Asian, so why would they put asians in the movie in the first place if the one's in the anime didn't look asian, it would kind of ruin the original setting of the movie, don't you think? Though it's true that the avatar world is based on asian culture, but none in the t.v series looked really asian, they all looked either white, mideastern, or Mixed.

I did see numerous opinions from various critics & journalists, but little evidence. a website called racialicious gives the other side of this story.

@TRorHemingway secondly Shyamalan is a douchebag. ever hear of an Uncle Tom? you can be of Indian heritage and still discriminate against people. just because he's Indian doesn't mean he's somehow immune. how many of his movies even star non-whites? also, based on his interviews, you can tell he's just an egotistical dick. so it's highly doubtful that he cares who he offends or discriminates against.

I think it's pretty absurd that some people are so vocal about cartoon characters being played by White actors have never called Anime/Manga creators on the carpet for A.) Creating the concept of "White Washed" Asian characters or B.) Marketing "White Washed" Asian character illustrations to a non-Asian demographic using the same ideas you claim Hollywood espoused in this case.

Avatar the last air bender is a fictional oriental style Asian world. The creators themselves had done vast research to make sure it was. The martial arts for one is a major signifier. Along with the buildings, writing style, clothing, food and etc. They even drank tea (Orginated from China) and ate with chopsticks. It doesn't get clearer then that. Besides that don't any one find it strange that there's a white monk (in the movie)? (In the movie) A white monk with a crucifix symbol on his back

I'm a big fan of Avatar..not being racist or anything but damn seriously, Asian people are best fit for all the main character. Who said there's no Asian to cast? They could use the Asians in The Karate Kid and Ninja Assassin :D Maybe Stephen Chow should direct this movie haha.
The Fire Nation are Indians...too weird for me.
All the casting is a weird combination.
Maybe there should be an Asian version vs. M.Night so people will stfu! XD

Shamalan just put on Avatar for his daughter to watch one day,watched it with her, & liked it...liked it so much...that he wanted to butcher it! ooOOoo What a twist! It should've been a 3 part epic trilogy (lords of the ring, matrix,etc),not some 90min sandwich of everything.There should've been more Asians and Inuits.Sucks to see that there are alot of talented optimistic Asian & Native American actors hoping to be a big star one day and not realizing Hollywood is still stuck in the early 1900s

@mojobobo178 The ONLY thing Asian about the show was the Architecture, in some of the world. The writing wasn't in ANY language, let alone any Asian Language. Yes, some clothing was a bit Oriental, but there were pirates in the show as well... also Inuits, and rednecks. How is THAT Asian?
The only people that should complain are black people. They had one African American / black person between the movie and the show. And he got a total of 3 1/2 minutes in the movie. Again, NOT an Asian show.

Night Shamalamadingdong cut them (the Kiyoshi warriors) out after making a trailer with the kiyoshi warriors in them and a promotional poster with Suki on them, because he didn't want the audience to 'fall in love with them'. (!!!) Suki will appear in the second movie. Smooth, M. Night.

SUKI was in the movie? are you for real, how come i didn't see her? i know that they totally forgot the kiyoshi warriors, which was a BIG part in AVATAR. lol i know right. i already saw the movie when it came out at the theaters. I TOTALLY THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE ASIANS in the ASIAN movie. cause the cartoon characters are ASIAN right?! i mean aang was a monk which is supposed to be asian. but no, only one tribe was asian, A.K.A. I mean obviously Aang would be from somewhere like Tibet because of the monk thing, and the water tribe is Inuit, fire nation would be Japanese (since in the cartoon they had that straight hair and Japanese facial hair), and the Earth kingdom would probably have been Mongolia based... so where where the hell did they get these actors!? Just because the Asians were in the background does not mean they were fairly depicted!
