I bought this album when it first came out and still listen to it, particulary this cut, on a regular basis. These guys were so talented ... music that stood apart from the rest decades ago and still does. Hope to hear more from them in the very near future.
I was cruising past the WEATHER CHANNEL on my remote one rainy afternoon and heard THROUGH THE LENS as it played and it made me stop and pay attention to the whole song. Checkfield is an American duo (John Archer/Ron Satterfield) born out of SD's Mesa College, making home recordings and stockpiling a vault of music before seeking a record deal. Every blue moon, these 2 show up to play venues locally in similar locations as another San Diego local loyalist, Joyce Cooling.
Ron Satterfield and John Archer were 2 college pals that went global after graduation, they took their craft to heart because all of their pieces have a way of clearing out the clutter of your mind. Nothing released in the 2000s due to record label distractions but hopefully, something soon down the road? Time will tell.
This is what ya call no pressure in the studio..everyone is on the same page. What a BRILLIANT piece of material...art work in motion.... how can music with words that doesnt have a direct meaning move ya.. catch ya attention & let your mind body & soul go where it wants. This trax takes me back to when cd101.9 N.Y.C. played smooth jazz .Every week something FANTASTIC hit the airwave & i flew to the store to purchase..miss that time & era BIG TIME! Thanks 4 the quality post!
A song that will carry you away! One of the best by Checkfield. I have ALL their CD's and never tire of them. What ever happened to great music like this? I also have the original video for "Through the Lens", which, as another poster mentioned, is filmed in the far east. Brilliant!
I would love to see the video for this again... its been about 15 years since ive seen it... I used to watch in on wyny tv, and wpbs would play it from time to time! Absolutely love this song!!!!!
Does anyone have Grasslands from this album on here? I have the casette, but it was eaten alive by a bad tape player. :( (Been trying to get it to work for a while, but it just kept getting worse. I may resort to Google to find it somewhere.) I thought I was one of a very small few with this album.
@forgetmenotcater I got the tape. I'll put it on CD; then rip it to the computer, and make a video of "Grasslands." It's coming soon. I've got your back!
@m7a7b725 Thanks very much. :) I found the song on iTunes, by the way. Although I do believe it sounds a bit different than the one I had, but that's probably because it's in a different album of Checkfield's on iTunes. So again, thanks very much for that.
If you ever saw their own video, which one poster mentioned, you'd know that the images that truly go with this song are from Singapore. I was there in 1986 at a wonderful time in my life, and when I returned to the States I encountered this video on TV. I taped it, and still have it on an old cassette. It has reminded me ever since of that magical time.
I first heard this group while driving through Roanoke Virginia, bought the album in D.C. I forget how many of their albims , maybe 4 or 5, I ended up with, great "cruising" music.
Thanks for posting this. I thought I'd be the only one with memories. Great tune. They did have an original video, they would play it on PBS 31 in NYC.
I remember when this song came out. Big fan of theirs before. Their CDs just kept getting better and better. Saw them in concert at Humphrey's in San Diego, back in '90 when they released View from the Edge and they sounded BRILLIANT! Thanks for posting!

Great memories from the early 90's, and a free-flowing song, too! Love this album, though it's hard to find nowadays.

@fabulousvintage - "Flowers" is on Checkfield's "Reflections of a Decade" CD. If I can figure out how to upload it to YTube, I will.
