well that was a great song but what can you do with 10 minutes?...music is just a distraction now - you need to play one beat for many hours to get a spiritual feeling from that - but it all shuts down at 3am which is when Allah comes down close to the Earth - that's the time to get going - and the audience is too drunk to notice what you are doing anyway - and they just want something to listen to in a traffic jam or while they take a shower or a song to screw to - what's the use?
He's a fantastic bass player no doubt, but he has a bass player! So is he really a bass player or a guitarist who plays bass? Either way I wish I had 10% of his talent!
Was anyone else distracted from Clarke's amazingness by the violinist's amazingness?? =| I mean, obviously the whole band is killer, but that guy's intonation and everything else - WOW! Stanley does deserve the best, tho:D
big bad stanley i rember when the alembic was the most expesive bass you could buy 2 grand in the early sventies what would that be in todays money? anyway if your ever felling down listen to the dancer on schooldaze, it always snaps me right out of it.
Jaco ,Stanley, Stu Hamm, name anyone you like. The fact is your tiny minds have to rate a best or better or best of all time. Not one of you know or ever will know any of these exceptional artist. If you had you would understand how truely stupid an artist thinks someone is with a ranking a opinion. Truth is all the besr give credit to their peers and cite the influence has on each other.
@arthur8557 Finally, someone who sees eye to eye with me! Everyone just loves to play favorites. There is no one best, just a bunch of amazing players helping redefine the instrument.
Music isn't a competition even though some people continue to only see it as such, it's an expression of feeling. who really gives a rats ass who is the better or not better musician, I like AC/DC (hardly complex music arrangements) as well as Stanley, Jaco, Marcus Miller, Steve Harris, Billy Sheehan, Geddy, James Jameson, and a shitload of others. I don't think anyone of them are God just because they play well, and I don't think in terms of better or best, all have something to contribute
AMAZING! I am glad to see that Stanley still has it and puts on a great show into the bargain as well. This happens to be one of my favorite songs of his, and I like what they did with it here.
the difference between Stanley and Jaco, is that Stanley can play......Stanley knows melody, listen to this pure melody, that is what music is about, its not completely subjective, its orderly always even when it stretches out....go STANLEY
you need to be more tolerant. It's like saying Caravaggio is better than Rembrandt or Picasso. I love Jaco and Stanley for quite different reasons. Enjoy the music !
People are locked into believing that Jaco is the greatest and its not fair. Jaco didn't really do anything amazing on bass, Stanley did some fantastic work. Jaco couldn't seem to hold a groove for an entire song, I don't get him at all. I only heard a few songs...2 actually where his playing is good, all others sucked to me
Bass players took notice because Jaco played solo pieces on the bass that were melodic in themselves. I.e. Donne Lee, Portrait of Tracy. Very composed even if they sounded improvised...they were not.
He also had very good timing apparently. Pat Methany said Jaco's 16th notes were actually very accurate 16th notes.(but Methany admitted....this was before the drugs).
Jaco's did some great recordings...but people remember them. It's like a movie where you like it just because of a few highlights. So when you watch to movie again, you realize the other parts were boring or not so great....
Stanley's playing is like a movie you enjoy all the way through. And when you watch it again, you enjoy the whole experience.
I couldnt fit all the words lol..maxed out the comments...
There were very few Jaco things I bothered to learn. My favorite Weather Report albums are Mysterious Traveller and Black Market....with the exception of "Barbary Coast".....(which is Jaco's famous signature funk riff that Jaco transposed..sped up...slowed down and used many other times) I like the bass lines Alphonso Johnson played more.
i don't understand if the jaco that i know is diferent that yours... "didn't really do anything amazing" wtf? teen town or portrait of tracy means something to you? or donna lee? jaco is a legend
I think the reason people keep saying Jaco is "better" is that Jaco passed away (like MJ) because started to pay more attention and all the sudden he becomes the "greatest".
well, MJ was called the greatest before he passed, anytime you broke every world record for a recording artist then you are the greatest, the only thing is that once MJ broke all the records then they claimed some other people came along and beat him out. Jaco did only become renowned after his death, check any of his videos and you will never hear anything amazing,
Speaking as someone who was alive and playing when Jaco and Stanley were in their heydays, I can testify Jaco changed just about every bassist's life when his solo record came out. Stanley had the same effect, in a different way.
Jaco was known as a virtuoso from the minute he was on record.
I was more influenced by Jaco, but I listened to a lot of Stanley too. They saw each other as peers, though some in the crowd set them up as competitors. Jaco-reknowned before death
And I can assure you that if him and I are about the same hight I have larger hands than him. But then again I'm a farm worker. And I've learned that we are famous for our large muscular hands.
Employed in farm working and yet an atheist. Go figure! ;p
But of cours I love Stanleys way of playing. And it gets ever more impressing with large hands to manage the precision work of playiing an advanced musical intrument.
Wow, the first time ever hearing this. Super grin through the whole video. I'm ashamed as a bass player to say I'd not listened to Stanley earlier. Amazing stuff.
This is the Mike Jordan of the bass to the tenth power! No matter who maybe your influence, the majority of modern bass playing comes through Stanley in one way or another....LOL.
I listened to his stuff when it was new and everytime I listen to it NOW I STILL get goosebumps! No one will ever write and perform like he did! The MASTER of his craft!
Sweet. I remember this tune from my vinyl copy. Wasn't this song actually called, "The Dancer?" Mr. Clarke is kicking ass in this performance. Thank you for posting this.
Bravo Stanley ! Ca fait toujours plaisir à réentendre... Stanley n'est-il pas un guitariste à l'origine ? Son jeu fait penser à ça... Il a des mains géantes !

Nobody plays the bass guitar like Stanley. His use of allegro, tempo, the solo break, ostinato,
legato and diminuendo is unequaled among
bass guitar players. This is more than likely due to Stanley being a virtuoso Bass Cellist in addition to the bass guitar. Bravo Stanley !
