MAHALIA LIVED A REAL HOLY GHOST FILLED LIFE AND GOD ALMIGHTY BLESSED HER IM SO THANKFUL FOR PEOPLE WHO REALLY FOLLOW AFTER JESUS HER LIFE WAS AN EXAMPLE TO TRUST IN GOD!
When I was a child growing up in the desert of California in the '50's there was a show on Sunday mornings on KFWB called 'Jazz goes to church," it was gospel music and we would blast it from our old Philco Radio and it would always end with this song at 11:30. Brings back so many memories, good and bad, the whites weren't really happy to have us there in the late '40's and early '50's, but still in all, this brings it all back, yea, Mahalia Come Sunday indeed.
All of the Newport concerts mostly sit in a vault. The filmed events just sit and rest too.. Which is such a shame. Thank you for sharing this. I've seen "Jazz on a Summer's Day. which I supposed is the 1958 concert she did the next day.....
where did you get such nice preserved copies of these live performances...Thank you for sharing. I really like Mahalia-she is so soulful and you can tell she sings from the depths of her heart.
thank you so much for posting this, i have the whole album but to hear this live is so much more amazing, and also thank you for loving great music, if only more people would!
@cavemanc This was written by Duke for Mahalia specifically. He wanted her to sing on his BBB album but she wouldn't sing anything secular so he had to write something to fit her taste, thus...Come Sunday. I like the studio version better.
She could have been the greatest blues or Jazz singer ever, but she chose to give it all to God......wow..... I don't know, if I had her talent I would've run for riches. I laud her conviction.
@ThatsABiggon She was very well compensated for her art. Not trying to hate... just saying (as Shirley Caesar has also said) that gospel music pays, too.
A very interesting intro... It sounds like Duke is spending a long time giving the key and the first musical phrase of the song. Then Mahalia hits it and burns! Amazing. There is always some amount of tension in the jazz paradigm. You may have some charts, but there is always an element of the unknown in a performance. When "the Spirit" takes over ANYTHING can happen. Here they just gave her a royal carpet of chords to sing over. She sang with pride and conviction. AMEN
Remember what I mentioned about Mahalia's concert of '57 at Newport? None of the 1957 material has been released of Mahalia's.
This was done in 1958, the night before Mahalia's big concert (which is on CD MAHALIA JACKSON LIVE AT NEWPORT, 1958).
This "Come Sunday" and the "Keep Your Hand On The Plow" that I posted was done during one portion of Duke Ellington's concert, which can be found on DUKE ELLINGTON & HIS ORCHESTRA LIVE AT NEWPORT, 1958.
Hey I've actually been talking to some fella from Europe that has the audio from the '57 concert and the footage from one of those '61 concerts from Europe! He says he got them from the Lib. of Congress!
This is the most thrilling recording on YouTube! Thanks for posting, Rowoches.
I had no idea Mahalia had ever sung this live in performance before an audience, other than the the extraordinary recording on Duke Ellington's famous "Black, Brown and Beige" album.

Her vocal power was so great that she had to give it to her God. No earthly man could handle it.

Mahalia and Duke..both geniuses and touched by GOD in their respective genres.
Man, this is real human spirit & music coming together and creating an atmosphere!

This shows Mahalia's talent is unlimited. Duke had a hard time talking her into singing this song, but I'm glad he succeeded.
