wow the asl versyon of the movie "the red ball that i saw in school. Not exactly but love this! wonderful way to show the use of classifiers and have fun.
Just so everyone knows, this is not the person who uploaded the video. This is Ben Bahan (as cantareadio said previously) and he is a signer in some of the best ASL learning books in schools. Just a heads up :)
Hi, Great story teller! Is this story written on paper? I would like a copy to do my sign language experiement for my psychology class. I'm providing the fact that asl users can remember well from watching asl stories compared to captions.
Hi, I'm also an ASL student and also a I work wtih kids and I will like if you could write your story like that I can show it to my hearing students in paper so they can follow me when I gesture the story ...
Classifiers are not ASL iconic signs! Each classifier represents a specific "class" or group of objects. For example, the "1" or index finger pointing up is used to represent a person and then can be moved to show action. It can also be used to represent a pole. If it's sideways it can represent pencils or cigarettes.
It's basically a "gingerbread man" story (remember the cook chasing, then more people/animals joining) about a scientist inventing something when a boy walked in. Suddenly the chemical solution blew up, resulting in a bouncing ball. The boy got on his bike to follow, others joined. Characters: boy on bike, dog, girl on rollerblades, old man, parrot, and fat woman.
Classifers mean ASL iconic signs that represent people/things. Finished the entire translation, but can't fit here. Sorry! :)
Lol, Ben was always my favorite in the Signing Naturally series. This vid brought back a lot of good memories when I was a new ASL student. Man that seems like forever ago... Great curriculum and great vid! Thanks for posting!!!
ben behan is such a beast, he is an amazing story teller... who could make a story about a ball interesting? and the part where they all fall through the doors, hilarious!
Although I am not deaf, I think that this is a real gr8 idea to make videos for you guys... you should have started to get bored of all those music videos ... ;^)
we watched this in our asl class and had to recreate it. every one of us had to individually sign this to our teacher. i love the fat woman who skids around corners.
OK mickey - why not ask the person who posted this video to explain what is going on here ? Might be a thought rather than being rude and sounding like an idiot.
Man, kapierts doch dass is ne geschichte in hörgeschädigtensprache, und nur weil wir sie nicht verstehen muss sie doch nicht unbedingt schlecht sein!!!
Ben Bahan is the best story teller ever. Wish I could meet him!! Easy on the eyes too!! Thanks Ben. I am taking sign and I love watching you on the dvd's that come with the study books.
I had to learn this story for class. I like it a lot, it is funny. You just need to remember who came when...that's the tricky part...
I love the ending with the ball smiling!!!!

Thank you for posting this video! It's much appreciated by so many who'd prefer to not cart the DVD around everywhere.
And it's true, Ben really is the man.

Ben is the man.... this video really helped me see how the classifiers are suppose to be used.
Can you add more videos from the Signing Naturally Series. I had the level 1 VHS but it broke.
